SUMMARY:Well-being:Heartfulness Guided Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Heartfulness Guided Meditation is a weekly\, drop-in program designed to help you Mental well-being. \n\nAll U-M students\, faculty\, and staff are welcome to participate in guided meditation practice with a trainer every Friday at noon over Zoom (details to join are provided below). No prior experience with meditation is required. \n\n*What will you learn?*\n\nThe guided meditation practice involves three simple steps: relaxation\, rejuvenation\, and meditation.\n\nRelaxation brings your body to a calm\, steady posture creating a stillness at the physical level\, and prepares the mind for meditation. We follow this with a rejuvenation method to detox the mind to let go of stress and complex emotions\, and will leave you feeling light and refreshed. Lastly\, learning to meditate by being mindful of your heart will connect you with yourself by listening to your heart’s voice. \n\n*Why Meditate?*\n\nWhile physical fitness keeps our bodies in shape\, meditation is an exercise for the mind and mental wellness. In addition to the measurable benefits mentally and physically\, many people benefit from an unquantifiable inner poise and harmony. \n\n*Please take Learn to Meditate session if you are new to the practice. These sessions are offered Monthly.* https://events.umich.edu/event/128708\n\n*Event Details*\n\nHeartfulness Guided Meditation \nFridays from 12-12:30 p.m. ET (except during university season days / holidays)\nJoin Via Zoom Meeting\nRegister to receive Passcode (see “Related links”\n\n\nThis wellness program is coordinated by ITS Teaching & Learning and provided at no cost by heartfulness.org.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Getting Real Value From Analytics: Making Sure You're Really Answering the Right Questions\n\nThe power of analytics has grown exponentially with advances in algorithms\, processing power\, and data availability. But successfully gaining value from analytics often remains elusive. In this talk\, Dan will highlight examples from his experience as part of his philosophy for developing and deploying analytics in practice to ensure they answer the right questions to drive significant and sustainable impacts. He will also talk about internships and career opportunities at Caterpillar.\n\nBio: Dan Reaume has over 25 years of experience leading the development and delivery of analytic solutions and strategies for several of the world’s largest and most iconic companies. After completing his Ph.D. in IOE at the University of Michigan\, Dan joined GM R&D\, where he was awarded GM’s top technical award on three occasions\, rose to the rank of technical fellow\, and led GM’s Senior Leadership Technical Council. He subsequently held leadership positions with Dow Corning\, Dow Chemical\, and Revenue Analytics before assuming his current role as Chief Analytics Director of Cat Digital. Dan leads a team of over 100 data scientists applying analytics to IoT monitoring\, aftermarket sales\, e-Commerce\, and business optimization. Dan has a long track record of service to the Analytics profession\, teaching as a lecturer at IOE for almost two decades\, serving on the INFORMS Roundtable\, and serving on advisory boards for Purdue\, Michigan State\, and Wayne State Universities\, the Chicago Analytics Leadership Network\, and the Chicago CDO Community. Dan is also a licensed professional engineer and attorney.\n\nThis seminar series exposes students to a wide-ranging of potential careers in industrial and operations engineering such as consulting\, data science\, healthcare\, finance\, supply chain management\, energy\, transportation\, and others. Students will learn from industry affiliates about the nature of different careers and how to prepare for success after graduation.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Taming corporate power in the 21st century
DESCRIPTION:There is broad consensus in the US that monopolistic corporations have grown too powerful and that we need to revive antitrust to take on the “curse of bigness.” But information and communication technologies have fundamentally altered the operations of our economy in ways that undermine the basic categories we use to understand it. Nationality\, industry\, firm\, size\, employee\, and other fundamental terms are increasingly perplexing. If we want to understand and tame the new sources of economic power\, we need a new diagnosis and a new set of tools.
