SUMMARY:Exhibition:Carrying the Torch
DESCRIPTION:Fire has profoundly influenced ecosystems across the planet. It is a natural phenomenon borne of lightning\, but it is also a cultural one carried in the hands of human beings. As the singular species with the ability to harness fire\, it has played a fundamental role in our own evolutionary history and that of the environments we inhabit. We have expanded the natural range of fire as we have expanded our own\, introducing it to areas not commonly ignited by nature’s lightning and in doing so co-authoring ancient evolutionary pressures that have kindled remarkable diversity in landscapes and ecosystems.\n\nSouthern Michigan was once a dynamic mosaic of prairies and open savannahs bearing little resemblance to the landscape of today. Sustained and shaped by frequent fire\, these rich ecosystems formed a peninsula of grasslands extending millions of acres across the southern half of the state. Today\, less than 0.01% of these fire-dependent ecosystems remain\, reduced to remnants over a remarkably short 200-year window during which time fire suppression replaced a vital culture of burning by the region’s indigenous people. Without regular fire\, deeply shaded forests overtook savannahs and prairies\, obscuring the memory of a land once dominated by grasslands and the flames that created them. As diverse communities of fire adapted species decline and are replaced by others whose evolutionary mechanisms perpetuate pyric aversion\, fire itself is less and less capable of re-entering the landscape the longer it is absent. The window for action grows smaller each passing year. \n\nCarrying the Torch explores the unique fire ecology of southern Michigan through the visual arts\, probing its rich history\, examining its critical ecological mechanisms\, and drawing into focus the conflicting cultural ethos surrounding fire on the landscape. Encouraging viewers to consider prescribed fire today as the continuation of a practice dating back to the very emergence of our species\, it suggests through the presentation of the scientific evidence that to inhabit the prairie peninsula of southern Michigan is to be a mutualist with fire\, a carrier of the torch.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES Noon Lecture. Narratives of Transnational Solidarity in the Archives of Yugoslav Newsreels
DESCRIPTION:The Yugoslav Newsreels of Belgrade collection is a site of forgotten and untold stories about solidarities and transnational collaborations in an era of anti-colonial struggle. For the past five years\, the Non-Aligned Newsreels artistic research project\, headed by filmmaker Mila Turajlić\, has been focused on reactivating the political potential of these filmed materials. From the films made by the Yugoslav cameramen accompanying President Tito's '\"Voyages of Peace\" across the non-aligned world in the 1950s\, to the footage taken for liberation movements and newly independent countries in the 1960s\, the aim has been to explore how filmed images chronicled the birth of a political project\, becoming at the same time the vehicle through which this community was constituted. Working with the original cameraman\, and soliciting the subjectivities of those represented in the images\, the project aims to resurrect forgotten narratives and to invite a reflection on the cinematic representation of political visions.\n \nMila Turajlić is an award-winning director born in Belgrade\, Yugoslavia. Her documentary\, *The Other Side of Everything\,* won 32 awards including the prestigious IDFA Award for Best Documentary Film. It was nominated for the European Parliament’s LUX Prize. Mila’s previous film\, *Cinema Komunisto\,* premiered at Tribeca and won 16 awards including the FOCAL Award for Creative Use of Archival Footage. In 2018\, she was commissioned by MoMA to create archive-based video installations for their landmark exhibition on Yugoslav architecture. In 2020\, Mila was a Chicken & Egg Award grantee and invited to join the AMPAS Documentary Branch.\n\nRegistration for this webinar is required at https://myumi.ch/5WJVg\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CSAAW Seminar | Modeling Cognitive Diversity
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nIn this paper we propose a computational modeling approach to the study of cognitive diversity. This project takes a new approach and uses agent-based modeling to computationally investigate the relationship between functional diversity and team performance and its moderating variables. Agent based modeling allows us to explore agent behaviors\, this will not only help to determine if a correlation exists between diversity and team performance\, but also the mechanisms behind why those patterns emerge. Our model takes a specific approach and investigates how two different definitions of diversity\, Dominant Functional Diversity and Intrapersonal Functional Diversity\, affect team performance. The findings from this model indicate that the definition of diversity has a strong effect on the perceived team performance\, which could explain why results generated from studies are inconsistent with each other. Our findings reveal the importance of a universal construct of cognitive diversity which will make future studies more comparable.\n\nVIRTUAL SEMINAR - ZOOM MEETING LINK\nLink: https://umich.zoom.us/j/99929959678\nPasscode: csaaw\n\nSpeaker Bio: Caroline Skalla is an undergraduate student studying Computer Science at Kalamazoo College and will be graduating spring 2022. She has done research in high performance computing\, bioinformatics\, and bio-inspired computing. The topic of her senior individualized project is modeling cognitive diversity. SUMMARY:Presentation:POSTPONED FOR TODAY Social Brown Bag: Native Community Standing and Wellbeing
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nPrior research has thoroughly examined the different factors that contribute to higher (vs. lower) status (i.e.\, standing) in U.S. society at large\, as well as the implications such positioning may have on wellbeing. Although relatively new in psychology\, there is a growing literature examining social standing as a dynamic form of identity (Kraus\, Piff\, & Keltner\, 20011\; Kraus & Stephens\, 2012). However\, traditional approaches to assessing standing often fall short of acknowledging forms of status that are culturally relevant for individuals from underrepresented backgrounds (i.e.\, Native Americans). In the first half of my talk\, I introduce a measure of community standing (i.e.\, relative positioning in Native communities based on respect\, cultural knowledge\, and engagement)\, and examine the factors that are associated with higher (vs. lower) standing in Native communities. For part two of my talk\, I will show that community standing is positively linked to wellbeing. I will then conclude with a brief discussion of how this novel measure of status can be utilized to better understand how culturally relevant standing might influence life outcomes across diverse populations.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Shiyu Zhang - The Additional Effects of Adaptive Survey Design Beyond Post-Survey Adjustment: An Experimental Evaluation - MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Shiyu Zhang \n\nShiyu Zhang is a PhD candidate at the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science. Before arriving at Michigan\, she received master's degrees in immigration study\, sociology and data science\, and a bachelor's degree in psychology. Shiyu's dissertation focuses on the effect of adaptive survey design on estimates. She is also interested in collecting and using neighborhood features as auxiliary variables.\n\nThe Additional Effects of Adaptive Survey Design Beyond Post-Survey Adjustment: An Experimental Evaluation\n\nAdaptive survey design refers to using targeted procedures to recruit different sampled cases. This technique strives to reduce bias and variance of survey estimates by trying to recruit a larger and more balanced set of respondents. However\, it is not well understood how adaptive design can improve data and survey estimates beyond the well-established post-survey adjustment. This paper reports the results of an experiment that evaluated the additional effect of adaptive design to post-survey adjustments. The experiment was conducted in the Detroit Metro Area Communities Study in 2021. We evaluated the adaptive design in five outcomes: 1) response rates\, 2) demographic composition of respondents\, 3) bias and variance of key survey estimates\, 4) changes in coefficients of regression model results\, and 5) costs. The most significant benefit of the adaptive design was its ability to generate more efficient survey estimates with smaller variances and smaller design effects.
