SUMMARY:Performance:University Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Kenneth Kiesler\, conductor\nArianna Dotto\, Winner\, 2020 SMTD Concerto Competition\, violin\n\nThe University Symphony Orchestra presents \"Songs of the Ice\, music from Scandinavia.” The concert opens with the American Premiere of Songs of the Ice by the young Finnish composer Outi Tarkiainen. She has said\, “I see music as a force of nature that can flood over a person and even change entire destinies\,” and “I have a fundamental longing for the northernmost regions\, within me.” The concert continues with the dramatic Violin Concerto by Sibelius\, featuring violinist Arianna Dotto\, Winner of the 2020 SMTD Concerto Competition\, and the Fourth Symphony (The Inextinguishable) by Danish composer Karl Nielsen. With brilliant and stark orchestral colors and a unique and powerful voice\, Nielsen’s Fourth expresses humankind’s struggle to survive against adversity and violence\, and his conviction that human spirit is inextinguishable. \n\nPROGRAM\nSongs of the Ice - Outi Tarkiainen (American Premiere)\nViolin Concerto - Jean Sibelius\nSymphony No. 4 \"The Inextinguishable” - Carl Nielsen\n\nattend in person or watch livestream at https://myumi.ch/HillWatch

SUMMARY:Other:Call for Applications - Big Data Summer Institute in Biostatistics
DESCRIPTION:*The application for BDSI 2022 opens Wednesday\, December 1*\n\nThis year's Big Data Summer Institute in Biostatistics\, a SIBS program\, is a six-week full-time program designed to expose undergraduate students to the intersection of big data and human health. Students will have the opportunity to work in mentored research groups\, along with participating in social events across campus and in the surrounding area. Drawing from the expertise and experience of outstanding faculty of several departments at the University of Michigan — biostatistics\, statistics\, and electrical engineering and computer science — the institute exposes undergraduate students to diverse experiences and techniques that distinguishes it from any other undergraduate summer program in biostatistics in the country.\n\nwww.BigDataSummerInstitute.com

SUMMARY:Other:Synthesis and Photophysics of First-Row Transition Metal Oxide Semiconductor Nanomaterials
DESCRIPTION:Metal oxide nanomaterials based on first-row transition metals are particularly attractive for applications in renewable energy technologies because (i) they absorb visible light\, (ii) they are thermodynamically capable of performing desired photoredox chemistry\, such as water oxidation and reduction of protons or carbon dioxide\, and (iii) they are composed of inexpensive\, earth-abundant\, nontoxic elements. Complete synthetic control of the size\, shape\, and crystal structure of first-row transition metal oxide nanomaterials combined with a thorough understanding of their electrochemical and photophysical behavior is required to optimize their function in photocatalytic applications. This talk focuses on recent results from two ongoing areas in our group. The first area investigates the role of organic ligands\, solvent\, and precursor chemistry in controlling the size\, shape\, composition\, and crystal phase of first-row transition metal oxide nanocrystals synthesized at elevated pressure using solvothermal methods. The second project combines thermal difference and resonance Raman spectroscopy with DFT calculations to explore the dynamics and electronic structure of photoexcited states of nanostructured thin films of alpha-Fe2O3 (hematite). These data indicate that polarons (quasiparticles that comprise a charge-carrier self-trapped in a potential well formed by nuclear displacements of the surrounding lattice) form directly upon photoexcitation of a thermally activated lattice. This newly recognized mechanism of photoinduced polaron formation has significant implications for the use of hematite in light-conversion technologies such as photoelectrochemical water oxidation. \nKathryn Knowles (University of Rochester)

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography
DESCRIPTION:More than strict representations of the world we inhabit\, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. Map ≠ Territory deconstructs maps that have been used to subjugate\, appropriate\, and oppress\, as well as the maps that counter that power through emancipation and advocacy. The exhibit critically engages with materials that span from the colonial era to modern-day Detroit.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours.
