SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Pro Football Hall of Fame \"Before the Snap\" ft. Eric Welshenbaugh
DESCRIPTION:The Pro Football Hall of Fame is proud to offer a series for learners in high school\, college and beyond! “Before the Snap” gives an insight to professional careers in and around the NFL\, while giving a live audience the opportunity to interact with an industry expert. On Friday\, February 25th\, 2022 at 12:00pm ET special guest Eric Welshenbaugh will be on hand to speak on his career\, what he does in his current positionand much more!!\n\nJust like the NFL\, Eric Welshenbaugh was born in Canton\, Ohio. He is lucky enough to be the Executive Producer of HOF Productions. He is on a team that has produced several big live events such as ourMerlin Olsen Super Bowl Luncheon\, the former State of the Hall\, Sponsor-driven programming such as Centene's Strong Youth Strong Communities or Johnson Controls chalk talks or recaps of Enshrinement Week. He also has been lucky enough to interview or edit interviews of Hall of Famers\, NFL Legends and some other celebrities. Welshenbaugh went to the University of Dayton and studied Visual Communication Design. Learning how to tell stories on a canvas or just one piece of paper challenged him to constantly think outside of the box. He started as a graphic designer in advertising for the Hall in 2015 but stepped into a couple of positions editing videos forGeorge Veras\, who is an 11-time Emmy winner for CBS & NBC\, as well as traveling the world with musician Yanni. These roles propelled Welshenbaughinto places he didn't think were possible\, such as producing Youth & H.S. All American football as well as World TeamTennis on CBS Sports\, and most recently getting to be a producer for the Summer Olympics on the show Tokyo Tonight with Kenny Mayne and Cari Champion on Peacock.\n\nWe will be streaming the program LIVE on the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Facebook page and will take questions from schools and students across the country throughout the program. To participate\, all you will need to do is:\n - Visit https://www.youtube.com/user/ProFootballHOF at 12:00pm ET on Friday\, February 25\, 2022 to view the program.\n -To ask a question\, comment on the post with the following information:\n* Name of School (if applicable)\n*  Location\n*  Question for Industry Expert\n\nIf you have any questions\, do not hesitate to reach out! SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Jacob Bien\, Associate Professor\, Data Sciences and Operations\, Marshall School of Business\, University of Southern California
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In many fields\, data are routinely being collected at finer resolutions than would previously have been possible. While in principle higher resolution data should always be preferred\, it can lead to a mismatch between the level of measurement and the level of scientific relevance. Researchers are therefore confronted with the challenge of choosing the appropriate resolution level for data analysis. On the one hand\, naively applying data analysis methods at the fine scale of measurement may make it hard to detect scientifically relevant phenomena if they occur at coarser levels. On the other hand\, coarsening the data before data analysis risks missing out on fine-scale phenomena should they exist.\n\nIn this talk\, we propose data-adaptive tree-structured aggregation as a framework for addressing this challenge. We consider this problem in multiple contexts\, including regression\, Gaussian graphical models\, and multiple hypothesis testing. The works described include collaborations with Xiaohan Yan\, Christian Müller\, Ines Wilms\, Adel Javanmard\, Simeng Shao\, and Léo Simpson.\n\nhttp://faculty.marshall.usc.edu/Jacob-Bien/

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:From R&D to the Patient:
DESCRIPTION:Moving health products from the research and development stage to the clinic is a long and costly process that involves many actors\, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In these markets\, global organizations such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation\, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS\, TB and Malaria\, and Gavi play a significant role in moving health products through the process. These organizations influence market behavior at the research and development\, manufacturing\, procurement and delivery stages with the hopes of increasing access to life saving health products to patients in LMICs. Their efforts have been effective. For example\, over the last 20 years the number of deaths caused by AIDS\, tuberculosis and malaria has been reduced by 46% in countries where Global Fund works. Gavi has helped immunize 760 million children in the last 21 years\, preventing over 13 million deaths worldwide. These are significant achievements\, but are there opportunities to better engage some of the other actors in this space\, particularly those from the private sector? We will explore this idea through discussion with the panelists representing the Gates Foundation\, the Global Fund and representing the Gates Foundation\, the RBM Partnership to End Malaria\, and The Global Fund to Fight AIDS\, TB & Malaria.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Carrying the Torch
DESCRIPTION:Fire has profoundly influenced ecosystems across the planet. It is a natural phenomenon borne of lightning\, but it is also a cultural one carried in the hands of human beings. As the singular species with the ability to harness fire\, it has played a fundamental role in our own evolutionary history and that of the environments we inhabit. We have expanded the natural range of fire as we have expanded our own\, introducing it to areas not commonly ignited by nature’s lightning and in doing so co-authoring ancient evolutionary pressures that have kindled remarkable diversity in landscapes and ecosystems.\n\nSouthern Michigan was once a dynamic mosaic of prairies and open savannahs bearing little resemblance to the landscape of today. Sustained and shaped by frequent fire\, these rich ecosystems formed a peninsula of grasslands extending millions of acres across the southern half of the state. Today\, less than 0.01% of these fire-dependent ecosystems remain\, reduced to remnants over a remarkably short 200-year window during which time fire suppression replaced a vital culture of burning by the region’s indigenous people. Without regular fire\, deeply shaded forests overtook savannahs and prairies\, obscuring the memory of a land once dominated by grasslands and the flames that created them. As diverse communities of fire adapted species decline and are replaced by others whose evolutionary mechanisms perpetuate pyric aversion\, fire itself is less and less capable of re-entering the landscape the longer it is absent. The window for action grows smaller each passing year. \n\nCarrying the Torch explores the unique fire ecology of southern Michigan through the visual arts\, probing its rich history\, examining its critical ecological mechanisms\, and drawing into focus the conflicting cultural ethos surrounding fire on the landscape. Encouraging viewers to consider prescribed fire today as the continuation of a practice dating back to the very emergence of our species\, it suggests through the presentation of the scientific evidence that to inhabit the prairie peninsula of southern Michigan is to be a mutualist with fire\, a carrier of the torch.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:EIHS Symposium: Humanities-in-Recovery: The Case for Engaged Scholarship
DESCRIPTION:Format: This lecture is presented in hybrid format: in-person in 1014 Tisch Hall and virtual via Zoom webinar (register: https://myumi.ch/bRV1e).\n\nDescription: The humanities have been in a state of “permanent crisis\,” or so it seems. Yet the modern humanities were themselves conceived as a bulwark against a crisis of meaning and value. The current pandemic crisis has raised anew questions about the purpose of the humanities and what value they provide to society. Our multidisciplinary panel will engage with the question of the role of the humanities in relation to society. What is the role of engaged scholarship in this context? How can it avoid the mere instrumentalization of complex artifacts and problematics? The panelists will address these questions and more in the context of their own work.\n\nPanelists:\n• Peter Blackmer (Assistant Professor\, Africology and African American Studies\, Eastern Michigan University)\n• Amal Hassan Fadlalla (Professor\; Afroamerican and African Studies\, Anthropology\, Women's and Gender Studies\; University of Michigan)\n• Ricky Punzalan (Associate Professor of Information\, School of Information\, University of Michigan)\n• Anna Bonnell Freidin (moderator\; Assistant Professor\, History\, University of Michigan)\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:LAGS Seminar | Artificial Intelligence Is Eating The World
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to know about the world of high growth tech startups\, how A.I. is changing the world\, and how you fit in?\n\nWe're in the middle of a phase change in society. People usually call them \"revolutions\" - like the Agricultural Revolution\, Industrial Revolution\, or Information Revolution. Well\, we're in the Intelligence Revolution right now\, whether you want to admit it or not. A step function has already flipped\, and it's not going back. We'll tackle what that means for the future and especially for you.\n\nHi! I'm Scott Stephenson\, I was a Umich physics graduate student just like you. I've since cofounded the venture backed A.I. company Deepgram (with awesome Umich physics alums) where we build cutting edge deep learning to automate voice interactions in hundreds of products across 20+ languages. In graduate school\, we used machine learning techniques to understand the fundamentals laws of physics and now we get to build crazy cool\, massive scale artificial intelligence systems to understand the fundamental laws of intelligence.\n\nI'll talk about how physics prepared us for A.I.\, how we started an A.I. company\, how we raised money\, what it's like to work at a big tech company\, what it's like to work in a startup\, and how smart\, motivated physicists like yourself are uniquely suited to work on these problems and ultimately run this new intelligence revolution. \n
