SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Cosmology from vacuum physics
DESCRIPTION:We discuss a holographic approach to describing cosmological physics.\nThe cosmological spacetime is encoded in a special state of a\nfour-dimensional quantum field theory that is not conventionally\nholographic. The state is produced via a Euclidean path integral that\nincludes a three-dimensional holographic theory at a boundary in the\nEuclidean past. The same Euclidean path integral can be used to define a\ndual static spacetime\, and the many of the observables in the cosmology are equivalent to vacuum observables in the static spacetime. This duality has interesting consequences\, for example it gives a simple explanation for correlations between regions of the universe that apparently were never in causal contact. The model gives an effective field theory whose fundamental constant that is negative\, but generically will have a phase of accelerated expansion via a rolling scalar.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary Workshop in American Politics (IWAP)
DESCRIPTION:\"The Interdisciplinary Workshop in American Politics (IWAP) is a forum where research is shared\, discussed\, and feedback is given. It is open to all students and faculty at the university. This week\, Reuben Hurst will be presenting their work entitled Sociopolitical Contagion: Remedying Presumed Misalignment via Sociopolitical Claims. The work will be circulated to attendees a week prior to the workshop and it is recommended that attendees review the paper. If you are not receiving these emails and would like to\, contact one of the coordinators at jadeburt@umich.edu or sfolson@umich.edu. After the research presentation\, designated discussants provide feedback followed by general questions and suggestions from the audience. The aim of the workshop is to help people improve and develop research projects whether they are early-stage or well-developed.\n\n*Please reach out to Jade Burt (jadeburt@umich.edu) or Shayla Olson (sfolson@umich.edu) to get the password.

SUMMARY:Performance:Galens 2022 Smoker: Med School Musical
DESCRIPTION:The Galen's Smoker is an annual musical parody of life at UMMS and hands-down the most fun to be had at the University of Michigan Medical School! The 104th Smoker continues the time-honored tradition of saying “thank you” and “we love you” to our educators in the best way we know how: roasting them in the most brutal and outlandish ways possible. The show is conceived\, written\, produced\, directed\, and performed entirely by medical students. The Smoker aims to delight\, amuse\, impress\, and disgust through its humorous and juvenile perspective on Michigan Medical School education\, its gunner students\, and our beloved\, revered (and sometimes feared) faculty.\n---\nMasks and proof of vaccine OR a negative COVID-19 test are REQUIRED. Be sure to read about the event policies before you complete your purchase. Due to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases throughout the region\, the University of Michigan will require a proof of COVID-19 vaccination or negative-test protocol for indoor events. All guests and working personnel ages 12 and older will be required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination OR a negative COVID-19 PCR or rapid test taken within 72 hours of the event. Face masks continue to be required and must be worn during all events.

SUMMARY:Performance:Allison Russell
DESCRIPTION:Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information and policies before purchasing a ticket and again before attending a show. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave.\n\nThough deep and wide may be the world\, it is within dim and narrow rooms -- airless and mundane -- that the true stories of our lives are enacted\; are bartered and brokered -- enslaved and empowered\; held in and sung out.\n\nAnd Song most surely began as a cry or a prayer -- though no need discerning between the two\, for they are the same -- and both sacred: the prayer and the wail becoming Song as soon as shared.\n\nSome of us come\, later in life\, to find our knees\; while others slip young into trauma like a quarry stone gone under\, held down by the weight of their own world.\n\nMany of those\, alas\, never come back up. But those able are wont to be luminous\, struggle having landed their hearts on the outside of their bodies: a swinging lantern within that aforementioned dim room -- where stories are unraveled\, thus to be reconstructed... purposefully reanimated.\n\nIt was also within such a room that Allison Russell -- singer\, songwriter\, poet\, and activist -- bore witness to herself in descent. But the abused child she was played mother to the brave woman and fierce artist she would become -- surviving being one of only two options\, and not the most likely.\n\nBlessed be.\n\nAllison's new album\, Outside Child -- that draws water from the dark well of a violent past -- is her first solo offering\, she also being a pivotal voice in two bands: Birds of Chicago and Our Native Daughters. And telling her own story sounds now to have made her free -- not from it all\, but free within it: to reframe and reclaim her identity and its singular authority.\n\nThe songs themselves -- though iron-hard in their concerns -- are exultant: exercising haunted dream like clean bedsheets snapped and hung out into broad daylight\, and with the romantic poet's lust for living and audacity of endurance.\n\nNina Simone comes to mind\, as well Edith Piaf: two shamanistic practitioners who turned their faces into the blade of storm and roared back dignity and hope.\n\nThis music\, no less -- no less -- is a triumph: a courageous work -- burnished and bright\; unspeakably beautiful as she sings the unspeakable.\n\nAbove all\, it is an act of remarkable generosity: a cathartic\, soulful\, buoyant and redeeming gift to us all and\, one must believe\, to herself as well.\n\n-Joe Henry\nBath\, Maine

The talk will première on Friday\, February\, 25 2022 and can be viewed on this page\, at dptv.org\, or on the Penny Stamps Series Facebook page. This talk will be available for a limited period\, from Friday\, February 25‑Friday\, March 18\, 2022 (three weeks).\nTom Hugh-Jones is the producer of the David Attenborough-narrated Planet Earth BBC series and has spent twenty-two years producing natural history and science documentaries for broadcasters such as BBC\, National Geographic\, and Discovery. When he was just four years old\, Tom’s anthropologist parents took him to live with a tribal community in the Colombian Amazon\, sowing the seeds of his passion for adventure in the wild. Since then\, Hugh-Jones has worked on many prolific titles such as Planet Earth\, Human Planet\, and Life Story\, taking audiences around the world into the beating heart of breath-taking moments\, close encounters\, spectacular failures\, and places no human should ever go.\nHugh-Jones will also bring special guests from Blue Planet Production to discuss the teamwork and process of making Planet Earth and its companion BBC show\, Blue Planet.
