SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student DGT - Geodesics in Space of Kahler Potentials-Part I
DESCRIPTION:In this first talk of a two part sequence\, we will discuss some facts about the geometry of the space of Kahler potentials on a compact manifold. In particular\, we will discuss the relation between geodesics in this space and the homogeneous complex Monge-Ampère equation. There will be no prerequisites for this talk except a basic knowledge of manifolds.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Quran and the Sword
DESCRIPTION:This paper elucidates the willingness of an autocrat to push through institutional reforms in a context where traditional authorities represented by religious clerics are averse to them and where the military control the means of repression and can potentially stage a coup. We show that although the autocrat always wants to co-opt the military\, this is not necessarily true of the clerics. Exclusive co-option of the military obtains where the loyalty of the autocrat’s army is strong while the organizational strength of religious movements is rather low. Radical institutional reforms can then be implemented. Empirically\, the dominant regime in contemporary Muslim countries is the regime of double co-option where the autocrat resorts to a double-edged tactic: pleasing the official clerics by slowing the pace of reforms\, and ensuring the loyalty of the military so as to put down clerics-led rebellions.

SUMMARY:Presentation:MICDE Ph.D. Student Seminar: Jiahao Shi
DESCRIPTION:Topic: *Accelerating Stochastic Sequential Quadratic Programming for Equality Constrained Optimization using Predictive Variance Reduction*\n\nWe propose a stochastic method for solving equality constrained optimization problems that utilizes predictive variance reduction. Specifically\, we develop a method based on the sequential quadratic programming paradigm that employs variance reduction in the gradient approximations. Under reasonable assumptions\, we prove that a measure of first-order stationarity evaluated at the iterates generated by our proposed algorithm converges to zero in expectation from arbitrary starting points\, for both constant and adaptive step size strategies. Finally\, we demonstrate the practical performance of our proposed algorithm on constrained binary classification problems that arise in machine learning.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Cheech Marin - Penny Stamps Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:A paradox in the world of entertainment\, Cheech Marin is an actor\, director\, writer\, musician\, art collector\, humanitarian\, and a multi-generational talent. As Cheech himself jests\, “people know me from the womb to the tomb.\" Widely acknowledged as a cultural icon\, he is perhaps best known as one half of the hilariously irreverent\, satirical\, counterculture comedy duo Cheech &amp\; Chong\, which found commercial and cultural success with their stand up routines\, studio recordings\, and feature films. He has also voiced characters in several Disney films\, including Oliver &amp\; Company\, The Lion King\, the Cars series\, and Coco.\nIn addition to a successful life in entertainment\, Cheech Marin is recognized today as a preeminent advocate for Chicano art. In the mid-1980’s\, he began developing what is now arguably the finest private collection of Chicano art. In addition to artwork loans to numerous institutions\, this notable collection has been featured in over a dozen exhibitions organized and shown at more than 50 museums in the U.S. Comprising mostly paintings\, followed by drawings\, prints\, mixed-media artworks\, sculptures\, and photography\, the collection now serves as the core of The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art &amp\; Culture of Riverside Art Museum\, which opened in June 2022. A long-term goal of “The Cheech” is to supplement and expand the collection with Chicano artists\, media\, and subject matter not currently included through acquisitions and donations from artists and their estates\, art collectors\, dealers\, and institutions.\nCheech was born Richard Marin in South Central Los Angeles and was an Angeleno until a move to Canada\, where he serendipitously met Tommy Chong. He moved back to Los Angeles with Chong and their comedy duo proved entertainment gold. Six of their albums went gold\, four were nominated for Grammys\, and their Los Cochinos won the 1973 Grammy for Best Comedy Recording. The critically acclaimed duo made a fluid transition to films\, starring in eight features together. Their first -- Up In Smoke -- was the highest grossing comedy of 1978\, topping $100 million at the box office.\n\nFree of charge: use \"Related Link\" on right for complete details.

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit)\, open now through May 21st.\n\nA public reception will be held on March 9th\, 6:00–9:00 PM\, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.\n\nWe hope you will be able to see the exhibit\, and please be in touch if you have any questions.\n\nHumanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so\, those in prison reclaim their humanity.\n\nMuseum hours\nThursdays–Saturdays: 10:00 AM–5:00PM\nSundays: 1:00–5:00 PM
