SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Write-Together
DESCRIPTION:Write-Together sessions provide structure\, accountability\, and support for graduate writers working on writing at any stage\, from papers to theses to journal articles to dissertations and more. For each of these sessions\, participants can meet in-person or access a Zoom link and a shared Google document that will serve as a communal virtual space. Students will be invited to post pre-writing goals and post-writing reflections in the document. Writers can also schedule a 10-minute Zoom meeting with Sweetland faculty during each session to discuss writing questions. We will also provide weekly writing strategies to habituate students to best writing practices.\n\nWinter 2022 schedule:\nJanuary 10\, 24\, 31\nFebruary 7\, 14\, 21\nMarch 7\, 14\nMarch 21\, 28 - REMOTE ONLY\nApril 4\, 11\n\nSupported by the Rackham Graduate School and the Sweetland Center for Writing.\n\nMore information about joining virtually can be found at https://lsa.umich.edu/sweetland/graduates/write-together-sessions.html

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition displays images from the archive of photographs from Humanize the Numbers\, an ongoing collaborative project. Students and faculty at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor join individuals impacted by the criminal justice system in Michigan to create photographs for those on the outside. The project aims to showcase the creativity of those who are incarcerated\, using photography to allow their stories to add a personal dimension to the overwhelming statistics of mass incarceration. This exhibit hopes to foster discussion with policy makers\, activists\, and civic leaders about prison reform and mass incarceration.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:The Populist Origins of Corporate Capitalism in Jeffersonian Virginia
DESCRIPTION:The modern corporation as a legal and economic entity finds its origins\, in American history\, in the generation following the American Revolution. Its advocates understood the corporation as an expression of the revolution’s radically republican ideology\, embodying its principles of consent\, natural property rights\, and community welfare. \n\nA counter narrative\, viewing the corporation as an anti-republican concentration of oligarchic power\, developed as corporations’ economic roles became manifest. This seminar will look at a region in northern Virginia from which a wave of corporations were launched\, c. 1790- 1820. \n\nInstructor Jason Barrett is Professor of History and Humanities Department Chair at Lawrence Technological University. This seminar derives from his ongoing research into the political economy of the founding era. Reading and visual materials will be distributed in the seminar. \n\nThis class meets on Mondays\, from March 7 – March 21. No classes on holidays.\n\nPre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Thresholds: Regulating Risk and Water Contamination in Diné Communities
DESCRIPTION:Thresholds: Regulating Risk and Water Contamination in Diné Communities\nTeresa Montoya\, University of Chicago\n\nMonday\, Mar. 7\, The Open Talks will be held noon to 1pm\, and the Grad Workshops will be held 1 to 3pm. All parts via Zoom.\n\nAbstract:\nOn July 16\, 1979\, one of the uranium mill tailings disposal ponds at the United Nuclear Corporation facility near Church Rock\, NM failed. The ruptured mill earth dam released approximately 1100 tons of radioactive solid mill waste and 95 million gallons of acidic mine water into the streams and watersheds of nearby Diné (Navajo) communities. This disaster remains the largest singular release of radioactive material in U.S. history. In the spill’s aftermath—decades later and several miles downstream—I have worked alongside Diné grassroots coalitions on the Navajo Nation in their efforts to confront various forms of water contamination from this toxic disaster. Drawing upon ethnographic and archival material\, I explore the various regulatory frameworks through which radioactive exposure is legible and by extension\, the legal and political avenues that are made possible or denied. Through these activities\, I analyze discourses of risk management\, regulatory jurisdiction\, and chronic exposure by several state agencies and public officials in their response to community concerns of unsafe water. In doing so\, I theorize the arbitrary thresholds of toxicity within larger racialized debates over tribal sovereignty\, public health disparity\, and environmental justice for Diné communities today.\n\nThis is a part of the Research Center for Group Dynamics (RCGD) Winter 2022 Series - \"Water Ways: New Social Science\, Science Studies\, and Environmental Approaches to Water\"\n\nThis is also a part of the class Anthrcul 558 section 002

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Chasing Biomimetic Mobility and Speed with Untethered Soft Robots
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT:\nSoft robots represent an emerging class of biologically inspired machines that have potential advantages over traditional piecewise rigid robots in maneuvering through complicated environments and resisting external disturbances. They are primarily composed of elastomers\, fluids\, and other forms of soft matter and electronics for control and power regulation. However\, despite drastically growing interest and efforts in soft robotics\, building an untethered soft robot that is as fast and mobile as natural organisms remains a significant challenge.\n\nThis seminar will address this challenge by presenting untethered soft robotic systems with tight integration of soft multifunctional materials\, bioinspired soft actuators and sensing skin\, miniaturized flexible electronics\, and a real-time physics engine. First\, I will discuss how to develop a dynamic\, powerful\, load-bearing\, and “sensorized” artificial muscle that can be actuated with miniaturized electronics for untethered soft robots using shape memory alloy (SMA) and liquid metal embedded sensing skin. Next\, I will show that we can improve soft robots' locomotion performance and robustness by integrating soft multifunctional materials into soft actuators and soft circuitry. These materials include a thermally conductive liquid metal embedded elastomer\, an autonomously electrically self-healing composite\, and a highly conductive silver-hydrogel composite. Then\, I will present an untethered soft quadruped that tightly integrates the artificial muscles and onboard miniaturized flexible electronics. The robot can move at biologically relevant speed\, navigate unstructured terrains\, and be resistant to mechanical impact. I will also present an untethered fast multi-gait multi-terrain compliant tensegrity robot with high fidelity closed-loop control and real-time state reconstruction. Finally\, I will present a discrete differential geometry-based real-time physics engine for soft robots. The numerical framework is experimentally validated by a multi-limbed underwater soft robot\, a star-shaped rolling robot\, and a jumping robot. The physics engine is also used as a computational tool to optimize the design and controlled operation of an untethered dynamic frog-inspired soft robot.\n \nBIO:\nXiaonan (Sean) Huang is a postdoctoral research fellow in Prof. Rebecca Kramer-Bottiglio’s Faboratory group at Yale University. He received his Ph.D. at Carnegie Mellon University in 2020\, advised by Prof. Carmel Majidi. His research focuses on creating untethered soft robots and tensegrity robots that match the speed and mobility of natural organisms. He received his B.S in Mechanical Engineering and B.A in Japanese from Harbin Institute of Technology and M.S in Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
