SUMMARY:Exhibition:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition displays images from the archive of photographs from Humanize the Numbers\, an ongoing collaborative project. Students and faculty at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor join individuals impacted by the criminal justice system in Michigan to create photographs for those on the outside. The project aims to showcase the creativity of those who are incarcerated\, using photography to allow their stories to add a personal dimension to the overwhelming statistics of mass incarceration. This exhibit hopes to foster discussion with policy makers\, activists\, and civic leaders about prison reform and mass incarceration.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Dagger in the Heart of Christianity
DESCRIPTION:The dagger in the heart of Christianity is antisemitism. Christianity began as a Jewish sect\, and the quarrels in the early days were intra-Jewish quarrels. By the end of the first century\, especially with the growing influence of Greek sources on the development of the faith\, Jews and Judaism began to be cast as satanic. When Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire\, Judaism became a prime target of Christian hatred\, and antisemitism became a fundamental part of Christianity. It has brought untold suffering on the Jewish people and their religion\, most horribly the Holocaust. This lecture will review the history of how antisemitism came to be a central part of the Christian religion.\n\nReverend Kenneth W. Phifer\, PhD holds a BA degree in history from Harvard College and a doctorate from the University of Chicago. A Unitarian Universalist minister for over fifty years\, he served the Ann Arbor congregation for 25 years (1980-2005). He is the author of three books and some two dozen articles and has been active in many peace groups and social justice movements. He is a father of 5\, grandfather of 17\, and has one great granddaughter.\n\nThis is the second of five lectures to be presented once each month from February through June of 2022. A new series will start in September 2022.The next lecture in the current series will take place April 12\, 2022.The title is: Public Opinion on Climate Change: An In-Depth Look. Learn from well-known experts about an array of interesting subjects\, with an interactive Q&A period following each lecture.\n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the lecture.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Complex Systems Seminar: Promoting the use of agent-based modeling in scientific inquiry: a Learning Sciences approach
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Seminar\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/96616169868\nPassword: CSCS (all caps)\n\nAbstract: Agent-based modeling provides a powerful computational infrastructure to construct dynamic representations of scientific phenomena that can augment analytical models in unique and meaningful ways. However\, although it is used extensively in the field of complex systems and embraced by social scientists\, only a handful of researchers in natural sciences incorporate agent-based modeling components into their theoretical investigations. In this talk\, I will present findings from two of my prior studies on reconstructing existing theoretical models through agent-based modeling and I will argue that the tools and methods of Learning Sciences can help us cultivate productive ways of augmenting existing theoretical studies with agent-based components in a manner that is commensurate with scientists’ ways of thinking\, which would in turn accelerate adoption of the complexity lens by more and more natural scientists.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium (619 Presentation) - The Ontogeny of ‘twitter’ Calls in White Faced Capuchins: Usage and Context
DESCRIPTION:Humans have a unique ability to learn and modify language throughout their lives. Primate vocalisations appear fixed and innate in comparison\, which creates an evolutionary puzzle. However\, primates do show evidence of developmental plasticity within their use of calls and the contexts in which they vocalise\, suggesting a potential evolutionary connection to the flexibility of language. To better understand these possible connections\, I investigated a capuchin call\, the twitter\, which is a call that appears to show developmental changes. I collected observational focal data and acoustic data on wild white-faced capuchin monkeys in Costa Rica. I examined which behavioural states and specific behaviours were associated with twitters\, and whether this showed differences across age groups. I also examined the acoustic structure of twitter calls\, looking at whether there were changes across in the acoustic parameters of the call. I found evidence of age-related differences in capuchin twitter calls\, which suggests more flexibility in vocal ontogeny and the usage of calls than previously assumed. There appear to be interesting acoustic shifts as well\, which suggest greater flexibility in primate vocal development. This call appears to broaden to a whole new context later in life\, which is beyond what has been seen before.
