SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:WCED Roundtable Discussion. Authoritarian Power in the International Economy
DESCRIPTION:In what ways have the new forms of international linkages developed by authoritarian regimes over the last few decades changed the calculus of autocratic power? Contributors to the Spring 2022 issue of the \"Democracy and Autocracy\" newsletter will address this and discuss topics ranging from financial flows\, the global marketplace for surveillance and private intelligence\, and foreign funded kleptocracy.\n \nPanelists: Ronald J. Deibert\, Professor of Political Science and Director of the Citizen Lab\, University of Toronto\; Jody LaPorte\, Gonticas Tutorial Fellow in Politics and International Relations at Lincoln College\, University of Oxford\; Adeel Malik\, Globe Fellow in the Economies of Muslim Societies and Associate Professor at St. Peter's College\, University of Oxford\; Anne Pitcher\, Professor of Afroamerican and African Studies and Political Science\, U-M\; Ricardo Soares de Oliveira\, Professor of the International Politics of Africa at the Department of Politics and International Relations\, University of Oxford. Moderator: Dan Slater\, WCED Director.\n \nRonald Deibert is the author of *Black Code: Surveillance\, Privacy\, and the Dark Side of the Internet* (Random House\, 2013)\, and *RESET: Reclaiming the Internet for Civil Society* (House of Anansi\, 2020) as part of the CBC Massey Lecture series. Under his directorship\, The Citizen Lab undertakes interdisciplinary research at the intersection of global security\, ICTs\, and human rights. The research outputs of the Citizen Lab are routinely covered in global media\, including dozens of reports receiving front page coverage in the *New York Times\, Washington Post\, Financial Times\,* and other media over the last decade.\n \nJody LaPorte researches formal and informal politics in non-democratic regimes\, with a regional focus in post-Soviet Eurasia. Her current research focuses on the political effects of corruption in Central Asia and the Caucasus. She also publishes on qualitative methods\, including the development of new tools for qualitative and case study research. Her articles have been published in *Comparative Politics\,* *Post-Soviet Affairs\, Sociological Methods and Research\, Political Research Quarterly\, Slavic Review\,* and *PS: Political Science and Politics.*\n \nAdeel Malik is a development macroeconomist with a strong multi-disciplinary orientation. He co-directs the ERF Project on the Political Economy of Private Sector Dynamism in the Middle East\, and serves as an associate editor of the *Palgrave Dictionary of Economics* (Middle East Economics and Finance).\n \nAnne Pitcher's research comparatively examines the political economy of urban residential development\, the distribution of goods under authoritarianism\, and the role of regulatory agencies in Africa. She has undertaken extensive fieldwork in Mozambique\, Angola\, South Africa\, and Zambia. In addition\, she has built a dataset on the characteristics of privatization agencies in 29 African countries and is also currently geo-coding all the residential projects that have been completed in Luanda\, Angola.\n \nRicardo Soares de Oliveira serves as an Official Fellow of St Peter's College and a Fellow with the Global Public Policy Institute\, Berlin. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:From artist to activist with Ruth Daniel
DESCRIPTION:Navigating today’s complex and rapidly changing music industry is a daunting task. Mythologies abound on the key steps you need to launch and sustain a music career\, but what does it really take to carve out a path that fulfills personal goals and makes the world a better place? Curated and hosted by Matthew Dear\, in collaboration with the University of Michigan EXCEL Lab\, this virtual seminar investigates those questions through the lens of five leaders who have paved unique\, transformative pathways to success. \n\nOver the course of Fall 2021\, Matthew Dear interviewed five luminaries who have carved out unique\, highly-impactful\, and innovative careers that intersect music\, entrepreneurship\, social impact\, and creative storytelling. These interviews propel through the personal stories of each guest to illuminate the complexity of finding one’s path to self-actualization\, while framing the circuitous paths that are central to nearly every successful professional arts journey today.\n\nRuth Daniel is a multi-award winning CEO\, activist and change-maker. Inspired by the transformative use of hip-hop in the drug cartels of Medellin\, Colombia\, when a young MC said: ‘If it wasn’t for hip-hop\, I would be dead. Hip-hop gave me another option and I’m truly thankful for that.’ Ruth believes art has a capacity to make change in the toughest of contexts. From guitarist at the age of eight to record label owner\, band manager\, fundraiser\, international cultural activist\, entrepreneur\, educator\, influential speaker (TEDx) to prestigious award winner within a national arena (Social Enterprise of the Year & Manchester Woman of Culture to name a couple)\, Ruth’s passion to empower people to build their own positive futures through creative entrepreneurial programmes\, the development of cultural spaces and unique artistic collaboration projects shows no boundaries in terms of fields of work.\n\nfor more information and registration visit https://myumi.ch/7ePzb

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IISS Lecture Series. Palimpsests of Themselves Logic and Commentary in Postclassical Muslim South Asia
DESCRIPTION:Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies Seminar (IISS) is pleased to announce a book workshop with Professor Asad Q. Ahmed on his new groundbreaking monograph \"Palimpsests of Themselves Logic and Commentary in Postclassical Muslim South Asia\" (University of California Press\, 2022).\n \n Palimpsests of Themselves is an intervention in current discussions about the fate of philosophy in postclassical Islamic intellectual history. Asad Q. Ahmed uses as a case study the most advanced logic textbook of Muslim South Asia\, The Ladder of the Sciences\, presenting in English its first full translation and extended commentary. He offers detailed assessments of the technical contributions of the work\, explores the social and institutional settings of the vast commentarial response it elicited\, and develops a theory of the philosophical commentary that is internal to the tradition. These approaches to the commentarial text complicate presuppositions upon which questions of Islam’s intellectual decline are erected. As such\, Ahmed offers a unique and powerful opportunity to understand the transmission of knowledge across the Islamic world.\n\nRegister at https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJEtcu2rqzMtGdfi9eFQHGUAG26OTtA4Mg7n
