Recent alum Sai Zheng will be retelling how she developed her confidence and resilience as she navigated her career journey at U-M and beyond. \n\nAbout Sai:\nSai is currently finishing her master's program in Business Analytics at Columbia University. DESCRIPTION:Marco Pavone\nAssociate Professor\nDepartment of Aeronautics and Astronautics\nStanford University\nDirector of Autonomous Vehicle Research at NVIDIA\n\nAbout the seminar: \nAI-powered autonomous vehicles that can learn\, reason\, and interact with people are no longer science fiction. Self-driving cars\, unmanned aerial vehicles\, and autonomous spacecraft\, among others\, are continually increasing in capability and seeing incremental deployment in more and more domains. However\, fundamental research questions still need to be addressed in order to achieve full and widespread vehicle autonomy. In this talk\, I will discuss our work on addressing key open problems in the field of vehicle autonomy\, particularly in pursuit of safe\, data-driven autonomy stacks. Specifically\, I will discuss (1) robust human prediction models for both simulation and real-time decision making\, (2) AI safety frameworks for autonomous systems\, and (3) novel\, highly integrated autonomy architectures that are amenable to end-to-end training while retaining a modular\, interpretable structure. The discussion will be grounded in autonomous driving and aerospace robotics applications.\n\nAbout the speaker: \nDr. Marco Pavone is an Associate Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University\, where he is the Director of the Autonomous Systems Laboratory and Co-Director of the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford. He is currently on a partial leave of absence at NVIDIA serving as Director of Autonomous Vehicle Research. Before joining Stanford\, he was a Research Technologist within the Robotics Section at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He received a Ph.D. degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2010. His main research interests are in the development of methodologies for the analysis\, design\, and control of autonomous systems\, with an emphasis on self-driving cars\, autonomous aerospace vehicles\, and future mobility systems. He is a recipient of a number of awards\, including a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers from President Barack Obama\, an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award\, a National Science Foundation Early Career (CAREER) Award\, a NASA Early Career Faculty Award\, and an Early-Career Spotlight Award from the Robotics Science and Systems Foundation. He was identified by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) as one of America's 20 most highly promising investigators under the age of 40.

DESCRIPTION:Our weekly seminar series featuring internal and external speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).\n\nAbstract:\nAnthropogenic land and other resource use is a major force shaping the abundance\, distribution\, and evolution of species. It often disrupts historically contiguous habitats\, resulting in patchier and smaller fragments which can limit dispersal and gene flow. Populations experiencing such conditions can face elevated risks for inbreeding depression and diminished adaptive capacity. Wildlife managers use various and often multifaceted approaches including habitat restoration\, translocations\, breeding programs\, and demographic monitoring to mitigate extinction risk for species with small\, fragmented populations. I will focus on how genomics can be used to gain deeper understanding of the demographic outcomes of these practices and the value of looking under the hood in this way for assessing population fitness using federally Threatened Florida Scrub-Jays as an example. DESCRIPTION:Universities have a long and storied history of collaboration with community organizations and organizers. Yet these collaborations are not without their challenges\, as wealthy\, predominantly white universities must address issues of power\, privilege\, and competing priorities for these collaborations to succeed. While decades of research and experience have illustrated some best practices in academic-community collaborations\, the COVID-19 pandemic\, increasing politicalization of research\, growing public support of advocacy movements like Black Lives Matter\, and the increasing reliance on social media have forced community organizers to engage in new and creative efforts to support their communities. How can universities best evolve to collaborate with and support community organizations amid these new challenges? \n\nOn October 27\, join Dr. William Lopez for a discussion with Gladys Godinez\, Cecia Alvarado\, and Karina Perez\, three Latina organizers and creatives with decades of experience advocating with and for Latino communities. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ayumi Fujisaki-Manome will give a talk entitled \"Recently amplified interannual variability of the winter severity and ice cover over the North American Great Lakes in response to changing teleconnections\" at 3:30 pm\, Thursday\, Oct. 27 in CSRB 2246. Visit the website for details.\n\nAbstract:\nThe North American Great Lakes (hereafter\, the Great Lakes) are the largest world’s freshwater system and are partially frozen each year. While the Great Lakes annual maximum ice cover (AMIC) has decreased in recent decades in response to global warming\, notable year-to-year fluctuations exist\, and even in recent years\, extreme cold winters occurred (e.g.\, the winter of 2018/2019). In order to understand how the occurrences of these extreme winters are connected to large-scale atmospheric circulations\, we conduct statistical and process-oriented analyses from 1980 to 2020 using the time series of AMIC\, atmospheric reanalysis datasets\, and the North Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) data. We identify a reduced number of accumulated freezing degree days across the winter months in recent decades\, a step-change decrease of AMIC after the winter of 1997/98\, and an increased interannual variability of AMIC since 1993. AMIC is significantly correlated with El Niño-Southern Oscillation\, the North Atlantic Oscillation\, and the Pacific/North American pattern before the winter of 1997/98. After that\, the AMIC is significantly correlated with the Tropical/Northern Hemisphere pattern and Eastern Pacific Oscillation. Singular value decomposition of the 500 hPa geopotential height and surface air temperature shows a dipole pattern over the northeast Pacific and North America\, demonstrating the ridge-trough system. This dipole pattern shifts northward after 1997/98\, which coincides with the change in SST over the northeast Pacific\, where the second mode of the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) on SST shows a warm blob-like feature manifested over the Gulf of Alaska. The regression of wave activity flux onto the SST EOF shows that the source of upward and eastward propagation of a stationary Rossby wave shifts to the west coast of North America\, likely moving the ridge-trough system eastward after the winter of 1997/98 to place the Great Lakes region in the trough.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Touching the Void: Enabling the Future of Haptic Interaction through Shape Displays
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nTowards a goal of more human-centered computing\, I believe that interaction must be grounded in the physical world and leverage our innate abilities for spatial cognition and dexterous manipulation with our hands. By creating interfaces that allow for richer physical interaction\, such as bimanual\, whole hand haptic exploration\, these systems can help people with different abilities (e.g.\, children\, people with visual impairments\, or even expert designers) better understand and interact with information. My work in Human Computer Interaction addresses a central challenge in the widespread adoption of such haptic user interfaces – how can we create physical interactive displays that update dynamically\, and what are the interaction techniques and enabling technologies necessary to support such systems? This talk will start with our recent work motivating the need for such devices through the development of new 3D tactile displays for interacting with spatial information in Virtual Reality as well as interfaces for people who are Blind and visually impaired to author 3D models. I will focus the rest of the talk on recent enabling technologies (including electrostatic adhesion and perceptual illusions) to make these devices low cost and high resolution. Specifically\, I will highlight the need to better integrate the development of these devices with a sensorimotor control perspective in order to improve perceived performance despite physical device limitations.\n\nBio\nSean Follmer is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science (by courtesy) at Stanford University. His Research in Human-Computer Interaction\, Haptics\, and Human Robot Interaction explores the design of novel tactile physical interfaces and robotic devices. Dr. Follmer directs the Stanford SHAPE Lab\, co-directs the Center for Design Research\, and is a faculty member of the Stanford HCI Group. Dr. Follmer received a PhD and a Masters from the MIT Media Lab in 2015 and 2011 (respectively) for his work in Human-Computer Interaction\, and a BS in Engineering from Stanford University. His talk featured on TED.com was named one of the best science and tech TED talks of 2015 and has been viewed more than 1.5 million times.  He has received numerous awards for his research including an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship\, NSF CAREER Award\, Google Faculty Research Award\, and 15 Best Paper Awards and nominations from premier conferences in Human-Computer Interaction.
