SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Understanding Resiliency and Capitalizing on Adversity
DESCRIPTION:Unprecedented global crises have proven the critical need to develop the resiliency to overcome adversity and thrive at individual\, team\, and leadership levels. Understanding the true role of adversity enables us to embrace challenges as catalysts for change. Significant challenges in every context constantly emerge\, and the wisdom needed to thrive in this dynamic environment is essential for our growth and development. This workshop explores the resiliency theory framework\, focusing on practical insights\, knowledge\, and next steps to build resilient habits as individuals\, teams\, and leaders. This workshop uses interactive online activities\, small and large group discussions\, and personal reflections to help participants understand individual\, team\, and leadership resiliency\, and begin building resilient mindsets at each level. The BLI\, M-LEAD\, Army ROTC\, Air Force ROTC and Navy ROTC are excited to invite our students and emerging undergraduate leaders to join us on March 16th for an interactive workshop on resiliency with Justin Stoddard\, who investigates innovative methods and programs to help build and develop resiliency.\nPlease RSVP to your affiliated unit.\nIf a unit is on a waitlist\, please add your name\, as we will likely open additional seats. PRESENTER\nJustin Stoddard\, PhD\, serves as an Assistant Professor and Chief of Character and Leadership Innovation at the U.S. Air Force Academy Center for Character and Leadership Development (CCLD)\, where he is responsible for leading character and leadership development innovation efforts for the USAFA Team. Justin’s expertise in resiliency and overcoming challenges supports and explores methods to improve and refine the delivery of character and leadership development programs.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:33rd Belin Lecture: An Evening with Gary Shteyngart
DESCRIPTION:Join the Frankel Center for the 33rd Annual David W. Belin lecture with author Gary Shteyngart. The lecture will be preceded by a reception at 5:30pm and followed by a book signing with Shteyngart at 7:30pm. This is a hybrid event in the Weiser Hall 10th Floor Event Space. Zoom registration: https://myumi.ch/Qqqrq\n\nIn this evening with Gary Shteyngart\, the author will read from his work\; discuss past Jewish immigration and current Jewish American affairs\; and candidly answer audience questions about a wide range of social and literary topics.\n\n*New York Times* bestselling author Gary Shteyngart wins over readers and audiences with his blistering humor\, his satirical takedowns of contemporary society\, and his compassionate examination of modern love and loss. With his recent memoir *Little Failure*\, Shteyngart speaks to the American immigrant story with heart\, humor\, and biting wit. His book\, *Lake Success*\, tells the tale of a modern American living as a member of the one percent who abandons everything to discover the \"real America.\"\n\nThe Belin lecture series was established in 1991 through a generous gift from the late David W. Belin of Des Moines and New York to provide an academic forum for the discussion of contemporary Jewish life in the United States. Previous scholars to hold this honor include Deborah Lipstadt\, Samuel Freedman\, Ruth Messinger\, Jim Loeffler\, Beth Wenger\, and Lila Corwin Berman among others. Each year\, the lecture is also published in written form in collaboration with Michigan Publishing.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Whitaker Malem
DESCRIPTION:One would be hard-pressed to come across anybody who doesn’t immediately recognise the work of Whitaker Malem: you may not have heard their names\, but you will most definitely have seen their work. Their influence on popular culture encompasses various creative fields and has led to involvement with many leading visionaries. \nPatrick Whitaker and Keir Malem have been together professionally and personally for over 35 years. Renowned in particular for their leatherwork\, the self-proclaimed “Pop-Artisans” have spent more than three decades obsessing over the human form\, crafting what they describe as body-based sculptures that occupy the fantastic realm between art\, fashion and costume. \nFashion collaborations have included Alexander McQueen for Givenchy haute couture\, Hussein Chalayan\, Christian Louboutin\, Tommy Hilfiger\, Burberry\, Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY\, and Giles Deacon. Whitaker Malem’s creations have been photographed by David LaChapelle\, Ellen Von Unwerth\, Helmut Newton\, Mario Testino\, Rankin\, Terry O’Neill\, and Tim Walker\, and have been featured in iconic fashion editorials by Herb Ritts for British Vogue\, Pierre et Gilles for Vogue France\, and\, more recently\, by Rafael Pavarotti for Vogue Italia.\nPop music artists including Madonna\, Mick Jagger\, Janet Jackson\, Cher\, Paula Abdul\, Gloria Estefan\, Paloma Faith\, Doja Cat\, Megan Thee Stallion\, and Tove Lo have worn their designs.\nOver the last 20 years the duo have also worked on numerous movie franchises such as James Bond\, Harry Potter and Fast &amp\; Furious\, notably creating over 100 armor costumes for Wonder Woman and her Amazonian world. Other productions include Aquaman\, Eragon\, 300: Rise of an Empire\, Clash of the Titans and more. They have also created superhero suits for Captain America\, The First Avenger\, and Batman: The Dark Knight.\n2017 saw the first solo Whitaker Malem exhibition at The Gallery Liverpool\, showing retrospective work &amp\; introducing Transmorphic Superpeople\, an optimistic exploration of the multiple possibilities of fluid sexual identities. Their work has also been exhibited worldwide in various group shows. In parallel\, for the last 25 years\, Patrick and Keir have enjoyed working closely with celebrated British pop artist Allen Jones\, dressing many of his hypersexualised sculptures.\nThis presentation will explore maintaining an authentic working practice as independent freelance designer/artisans and offer insights into their inspiration\, evolution\, processes &amp\; experiences across the varied worlds of Fashion\, Film\, and Art.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Science @DO: \"Mirror\, mirror in the basement...\" w/ Prof. Pat Seitzer
DESCRIPTION:\"Mirror\, mirror in the basement\, what is the faintest star you can see?\"\n\nScience@DO is joined by U-M Astronomy Professor Emeritus Pat Seitzer to share the story of a giant telescope mirror that once lived in the Detroit Observatory basement and found a home in a telescope across the Atlantic Ocean.\n\n\"In the 1930s the University of Michigan planned a 98-inch reflecting telescope to be located near Dexter in Michigan. The 98-inch mirror was delivered (as part of the mirror development program for the 200-inch Palomar telescope). Sadly\, World War II and the death of Heber Curtis (who championed the project) put an end to the project. The mirror was stored in the basement of the Detroit Observatory for many years\, and eventually was sent to the UK where it became the first mirror in the Isaac Newton telescope at Herstmonceux. When that telescope was moved to the Canary Islands\, the mirror was put on display outside at the Herstmonceux Science Centre\, a piece of history of Michigan astronomy in the UK. I'll present the details of this marvelous history\, including how the 0.6-m Curtis-Schmidt telescope of the U-M now in Chile figures into this.\"\n\nTalk begins at 7PM. The historic Detroit Observatory will be open for tours following the talk. Telescope observing will be available\, weather permitting.
