SUMMARY:Presentation:Developmental Brown Bag: Collaborative comic as way to engage people in racial justice
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nComics are read by people of all ages. While most think of comics as a medium to be funny\, comics are increasingly used to address more serious topics. I will briefly discuss my research on the ways in which culture\, ethnicity\, race\, and migration affect development\, well-being\, and mental health of minoritized youth and families. Then\, I will discuss how I am now using comics as a form of graphic medicine to raise public awareness of how ethnic and racial experiences affect development and well-being.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Good Bureaucrats and God: Ethical Labor in an Irrigation Bureaucracy
DESCRIPTION:Good Bureaucrats and God: Ethical Labor in an Irrigation Bureaucracy\nMaira Hayat\, Notre Dame University\n\nMonday\, Mar. 14 via Zoom: Open Talks will be held noon to 1pm\, and the Grad Workshops will be held 1 to 3pm.\n\nAbstract:\nBureaucracies tend to feature in political and social theory as sites of structural violence\, patriarchy\, sovereign excess\, or foils to ethical enterprise. This talk\, however\, argues for the unique importance of studying bureaucracy as a site of ethical laboring. Tracing the specific\, surprising and sophisticated ways in which God participates in everyday bureaucratic practice in an Irrigation Department in Pakistan\, it shows how bureaucrats’ attempts to be “good Muslims” can produce “good bureaucrats.” The yield is a deeper understanding of how state officials experience and navigate the pull of the ‘private’ in everyday ‘public’ waterswork\, and how this in turn determines the service they provide. In foregrounding ethical laboring\, the talk brings together the anthropology of bureaucracy\, ethics\, and secularity towards newer configurations.\n\nThis is a part of the Research Center for Group Dynamics (RCGD) Winter 2022 Series - \"Water Ways: New Social Science\, Science Studies\, and Environmental Approaches to Water\"\n\nThis is also a part of the class Anthrcul 558 section 002

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Distribution-Based Representations for Efficient Human-Robot Communication
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT:\nEfficient communication is necessary for real-world human-robot interaction. However\, directly communicating potentially high-dimensional data about complex tasks can be intractable. In this talk\, I show that robotic systems are capable of learning and acting on low-dimensional task representations in real-time. I introduce the use of spatial distributions as a concise representation of temporal trajectories to better describe tasks in human-robot collaboration and learning. In combination with information-theoretic controllers\, I show that these spatial representations can be used in real-time control paradigms and result in successful task performance. In addition\, I discuss how these motion representations can be used to design intuitive interfaces for real-time\, dynamic human-swarm collaboration. Furthermore\, I explore how these representations can be learned from data to facilitate robot learning\, e.g.\, learning task representations directly from human demonstrations. I illustrate the efficacy of distribution-based representations for real-time task control using results from simulation examples and experiments\, including field tests with a swarm of rovers. \n\nBIO:\nAhalya is currently a postdoctoral fellow at EPFL with Professor Aude Billard. She received her PhD and Masters in Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University with Professor Todd Murphey. She also received her B.Sc in Mechanical Engineering at Caltech. Her research explores methods for enabling efficient human-robot communication. Her current work focuses on combining learning and multimodal sensory fusion to enable safe\, adaptive control in human-robot interactive settings.

DESCRIPTION:The class will use film segments to promote stimulating discussions about families. During each of five sessions we will discuss one of these films: \"Avalon\" (1990)\, \"Eve's Bayou\" (1997)\, \"Smoke Signals\" (1998)\, \"Real Women Have Curves\" (2002)\, and \"The Big Sick\" (2017).\nParticipants can view the whole film at home and/or ponder the discussion questions before each session. We will look at how each family's history\, culture\, and environment affect the interactions portrayed.\nInstructor Arlene Weisz is a retired social worker and social work professor who enjoyed using films as part of teaching about families for about 20 years. This study group will meet Mondays beginning March 14 through April 11.\nPre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. RAAAS uses a risk-based approach to assess compliance with trade laws and regulations\, while collaborating with other U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) components\, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement/Homeland Security Investigations and Partner Government Agencies (PGAs)\, as appropriate. Through audits and other professional services\, CBP protects government revenue\, provides informed compliance to the trade community while presenting a deterrent to future violators\, protects domestic industries from unfair trade practices\, and facilitates legitimate trade. RAAAS conducts audits\, including Focused Assessments\, and other professional services.\n\nAudits generally have targeted audit objectives and are compliance driven. Audits involve data analysis and risk assessment procedures to scope the audit. Depending on the audit objective\, the audit may or may not include an assessment of the importer’s internal control over CBP compliance. Audits are often based on areferral to RAAAS. Audits also include the Focused Assessment Program\, which is a comprehensive audit that uses a risk-based approach to determine if the importer represents an acceptable risk to CBP.\n\nOther Professional Services (i.e.\, nonaudit services) are engagements not performed as audits but that require assistance consistent with auditors’ skills and expertise. Examples include (not all-inclusive): \n\nRisk Analysis and Survey Assessments (RASAs) are a collaborative\, multifaceted process based on cooperation\, information sharing\, and joint decision making between the Office of Trade\, other components of CBP\, other Department of HomelandSecurity entities\, and/or Partner Government Agencies\, as appropriate.RASAs are performed under the authority of 19 United States Code (U.S.C.)§1509(a).\n \nImporter Self-Assessment (ISA) Evaluations are conducted to support CBP’s ISA partnership program. ISAs include an evaluation of the applicant’s internal control design to assess the applicant’s readiness to assume the responsibilities of the ISA program.\n\nFor more information\, please go to www.cbp.gov/trade\n
