SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:LAGS Seminar | Opportunities for Graduates - Transitioning from Academia
DESCRIPTION:Physics degree holders are highly employable in both the private and public sectors. However\, students and early career scientists are often unaware of the types of career paths available to them. This talk will provide data on the number of physics degree holders and where they typically find employment\, give examples of common career paths\, and highlight career resources useful for exploring options and searching for and applying to jobs. The speaker will also discuss her own career path from academia to working at a University Affiliated Research Center (UARC).\n\nBio: Stephanie Su is a Senior System Engineer at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab. She earned her undergraduate degree in physics from Penn State University in 2013\, and Ph.D. in physics from University of Michigan in 2019. She joined APL in 2020 as part of a rotation program supporting various projects across multiple sectors and departments\, from operational analysis\, system requirements analysis\, model validations\, front end visualization\, to system design. During her time at APL\, she published an article on evaluation on model validation methods on APL technical digest\, and received special achievement awards for this work. She also organized networking module events for new hires\, and stayed connected with APS and became a Career Mentor Fellow this year.\n
