SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kristina Sheufelt: Here Nor There
DESCRIPTION:Reception: Friday\, September 9th\, 5-7 pm. ALL ARE WELCOME!\n\nSeptember 9 - October 14\, 2022\n\nHere Nor There is a new solo exhibition by multidisciplinary artist and environmentalist Kristina Sheufelt. Sheufelt is based in Detroit\, Michigan\, and recently received her MFA from the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In Here Nor There\, Sheufelt uses a variety of media to blur the lines between land and body. \n\nFor the past several years\, Sheufelt has spent her summers living in remote backcountry locations throughout the United States working on research projects ranging from self-directed study of emotional psychology in the wilderness to monitoring marine wildlife populations. In Here Nor There\, Sheufelt processes the emotional and ecological implications of returning to life in the city between reunions with the wild.\n\n\nKristina Sheufelt received her BFA from the College for Creative Studies in 2013 and her MFA from the University of Michigan in 2022.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Tuesday Lunch Seminar - Hybrid: Daphnia - the master of trade-offs
DESCRIPTION:Our weekly lunch seminar series featuring internal speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. \n\nThis seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page). Contact eebsemaccess@umich.edu for password at least two hours prior to the event. \n\nAbstract\nEvery organism is confronted with endless amount of challenges during its lifetime. Some of the challenges can be avoided\, for others the organism is prepared for (due to evolutionary adaptation)\, but most of those challenges turn out to be costly to confront. In such cases the focal organism frequently faces a trade-off – necessity to pay for improvement in one trait with deterioration in another trait.\n\nDaphnia is almost constantly found between a rock and a hard place\, and yet it is ubiquitous and dominates most of the lakes and ponds. It’s resilience to variety of environmental challenges stems from some impressive adaptations\, enormous phenotypic plasticity\, and mastery in performing beneficial trade-offs. During the seminar I will present some of the fascinating ways in which Daphnia avoids or mitigates threats like changing climate\, parasitism or predation.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Intercultural Development Inventory Group Session
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This session is intended for participants in the Rackham Professional Development DEI Certificate Program.\nThe Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) is used in multiple ways in the Rackham Professional Development DEI Certificate Program. Participants complete the IDI at the beginning and end of the certificate as an evaluation tool for the program. Once the IDI is completed for the first time\, participants can join one of a number of group results sessions. This session focuses on the theoretical foundations of the IDI\, gives a group result of DEI Certificate participants\, and provides tools to better understand the continuum of mindsets individuals utilize as their strategy for navigating across difference.\nGroup session participants will leave with a fundamental understanding of multiple approaches to navigating across difference and resources they can use in their organizations\, groups\, or affiliations. This session also serves as the initial step before an individual results session where you receive your personal IDI result and an accompanying intercultural development plan to help you pursue your intercultural goals.\nThis workshop is designed for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Space is limited. For faculty and staff\, please contact rack-prof-dev@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/pZ4Q1.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Journey of Self-Discovery
DESCRIPTION:To experience an interesting piece of art is to feel ALIVE. It propels one out of reality (for a moment) and transcends the spirit to a special place much like a spiritual awakening.\n\nI am interested in the creative process even more than the final product. The process of art making is therapeutic and one of self-discovery. It is a chance to play like a child and to allay fears/worries and to lose the confines of the world around you. It offers you a chance to dream\, dance and explore unknown worlds.\n\nThis exhibit is mainly focused on this creative process which I call the ‘Journey of Self-Discovery. Each painting has been created according to this process. Mindfulness is the goal.\n\nWe all see things from different angles based on our own individual experiences. I encourage you to look at things from your own perspective – each piece invites you to consider your own viewpoint\, a chance to let go and experience some unique personal other-worldly environments. Enjoy.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Reincarnations of Power Amongst the Mongols: From Möngke Tengri to the Śiditü Lama
DESCRIPTION:To date\, the historical Tibeto-Mongolian symbiosis has been analyzed from the perspective of Tibeto-centric or China-centric political histories. In this talk\, Dr. Ujeed reexamines the religio-cultural developments of Buddhism and Buddhist identity amongst the Mongols from the Mongol Empire through to the Qing period. As well as revisiting well-known religio-historical works\, her main case studies are extracted from newly obtained Mongolian and Tibetan language Buddhist biographies\, religious histories\, and records of received teachings from the early modern period. Collectively\, these case studies will demonstrate how the Mongols engagement with Tibetan Buddhism was fundamental for the dissemination and development of the wider Tibetan Buddhist tradition far beyond the realms on the steppe.\n\nIn addition to the in-person format\, this event will also be streamed via Zom. Please register for the Zoom webinar here: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_CP6CCQhrS-iwuFreoJvQYA\n \n Sangseraima Ujeed\, Assistant Professor of Tibetan Buddhism\, University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, received her MSt and DPhil degrees in Oriental Studies from the Department of Tibetan and Himalayan Studies\, Faculty of Oriental Studies\, University of Oxford. Her main research focus is the trans-national\, trans-regional\, and cross-cultural aspects of Buddhism\, lineage\, translation\, monastic and reincarnation networks\, and identity in Tibet and Mongolia in the Early Modern period\, with a particular emphasis on the contributions made by ethnically Mongolian monk scholars.
