SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Annual Distinguished Lecture on Europe. Poland as a Front-Line State: How to Defend Pax Europaea
DESCRIPTION:After the fall of communism the independent Poland set two strategic goals. Firstly\, to join the western world\, to make transatlantic (NATO) and European (EU) integration the cornerstone of our security and civilizational development. Secondly\, to “build the West in the East”- that means to continue the enlargement process to Ukraine and Belarus. This was perceived as the only way to guarantee the sovereignty of these states and finally bury the imperial ambitions of the Kremlin. As a consequence Poland\, for the first time in history\, would be surrounded by allies who would not pose any threat to its security.\n \n The Russian invasion of Ukraine proved that these goals remain valid. There is no secure Poland without a strong West and a free\, independent Ukraine. At the same time the invasion demonstrated how much the world has changed over the last three decades. The Pax Europaea (which was believed to be eternal) is in mortal danger\, and with that the integrity and the global position of the western world. The outcome of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict will not only determine the security of Poland and freedom of tens of millions of people in Eastern Europe. It will also predestine the future of the West and the global balance of power.\n \n Poland as a front-line state may have a historical role to play in this process. However the significance of Poland will depend on its ability to act not as a peripheral player but as an important partner to the US\, Germany and France. A partner which is able and willing to share responsibility not only for itself but also for the future of the whole Western world.\n\nKatarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz served as the first female Ambassador of Poland to the Russian Federation since the establishment of Polish–Russian relations (2014-16). Previously\, she served as the Undersecretary of State at the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 2008 to 2012 she was a member of the Polish Russian Group on Difficult Matters. She graduated from the Institute of Sociology of the University of Warsaw in 1994 and subsequently worked at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. She was a deputy director of the Center for Eastern Studies and the head of its Russian Department. She is the author of numerous publications on the systemic transformation in Central-Eastern Europe\, the EU\, and Polish eastern policy.\n\nThis even will be held both in person and webcast via Zoom. Registration is required to attend the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/Qe9Nk.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Other:Incorporation and molecular level consequences of mRNA modifications
DESCRIPTION:Cells face the daunting task of maintaining the right number of proteins\, at the right time\, under rapidly changing conditions. One way that nature accomplishes this is by chemically modifying DNA\, RNA and protein molecules to control their structure\, function\, stability and localization. A single cell possesses thousands of enzymatically modified RNA sites. These modifications have the potential to directly impact protein production\, and disruptions in the RNA modification landscape are associated with an array of diseases including cancers\, neurological diseases\, and diabetes. Nonetheless\, it remains to be discovered how individual sites of modification influence the function of a given RNA. We are working to ascertain how modifications to the molecular blueprints for protein synthesis\, messenger RNAs (mRNAs)\, influence protein production. Our studies have led to the discovery of new mRNA modifications\, reframed the current model for RNA modifying enzyme target selection\, and identified modifications that change the speed and accuracy of protein synthesis. These findings lay the foundation for establishing complex rules governing the molecular level consequences of mRNA modifications.\nKristin Koutmou

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Re-imagining Ultrasound and Photoacoustic Imaging
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nParadigm shifts in technology are needed for next-generation ultrasound imaging. We introduce novel electrostrictive row-column array technology that promises improved 3D image quality and ultrafast imaging speeds. Moreover\, these advances will lead to arrays of unprecedented size and novel form-factors such as endoscopic probes and wearable band-aids that will mitigate operator dependence and lead to longitudinal imaging opportunities. Our technology enables readout from every element of the 2D array using only row and column addressing\, and is well-suited to volumetric photoacoustic imaging using pulsed laser excitation to image optical properties of tissues. Novel agents and genetically-encoded reporters will be introduced. Applications to brain imaging\, cardiovascular medicine\, small animal imaging will be discussed. Furthermore\, a new non-contact all optical form of photoacoustic imaging will be discussed with applications to virtual histology of tissues.\n\nBio:\nRoger Zemp earned his PhD from UC Davis in 2004 and after three years of postdoctoral work in the Laboratory of Prof. Lihong Wang\, joined the Faculty in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Alberta in 2007. He is a recognized international leader in the field of photoacoustic imaging and ultrasound imaging. He has co-founded two startup companies and maintains an active laboratory at the intersection of ultrasound\, optics\, micro-nano-fabrication\, and in vivo imaging. \n\nZoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91375430500
