SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs: The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Director’s Financial Analyst program 2022
DESCRIPTION:This is the 3rd of 3 information sessions about our DFA program and the application process. This unique\, two-year rotational fellowship sits at the intersection of the federal government and the financial services industry. Director’s Financial Analysts are given the opportunity to hone analytical and problem-solving skills while helping to make markets for consumer financial products work for Americans. As a result\, in a short period of time\, analysts will play an integral role in everything the Bureau does\, from rigorous data-driven policy creation and market monitoring to on-site supervision of market participants. Director’s Financial Analysts have used the program to develop their professional skills and grow their public service networks within a collaborative cohort environment. Alumni of the DFA program have moved on to competitive graduate programs (e.g. Stanford Law\, Princeton MPP\, Dartmouth MBA)\, public sector opportunities (e.g. DC city government\, Federal Reserve Banks)\, private industry\, and other divisions within the CFPB. All analysts will complete developmental rotations in offices throughout the CFPB. These rotations are designed to provide exposure to the analysis\, strategy\, research\, education\, policy development\, supervision\, enforcement\, and rulemaking activities throughout the Bureau. We are recruiting for positions that begin after the 2021-2022 academic year.\n\nFOR MORE INFORMATION Please encourage interested students to send an email to CFPB_DFA_Program@cfpb.gov.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Kerr Geodesics and Self-consistent match between Inspiral and Transition-to-merger
DESCRIPTION:The two-body motion in General Relativity can be solved perturbatively in the small mass ratio expansion. Kerr geodesics describe the leading order motion. \nAfter a short summary of the classification of polar and radial Kerr geodesic motion\, I will consider the inspiral motion of a point particle around the Kerr black hole \nsubjected to the self-force. I will describe its quasi-circular inspiral motion in the radiation timescale expansion. I will describe in parallel the transition-to-merger motion around the last stable \ncircular orbit and prove that it is controlled by the Painlevé transcendental equation of the first kind. I will then prove that one can consistently match the two motions using \nthe method of asymptotically matched expansions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Linguistics Graduate Student Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Linguistics graduate students Justin Craft and Danielle Burgess will present their research. \n\nDanielle Burgess:\nInvestigating the NegFirst Bias in Learning and Communication\n\nABSTRACT\nIn response to the apparent tendency for standard negation markers to appear in preverbal position or to \"gravitate leftward\" across the world's languages\, Horn (1989: 452) postulated a \"NegFirst principle\". Tendencies for negation to appear early in the sentence have been observed by scholars working in typology\, language contact\, and language acquisition. However\, it remains uncertain if it is necessary to postulate and motivate an independent NegFirst preference\, or whether the observed tendencies can broadly be explained by other cognitive and linguistic biases which may play a role in basic constituent order patterns\, grammaticalization\, and language acquisition. In the current study\, I use an Artificial Language Learning paradigm to test the existence of a behavioral bias consistent with NegFirst in the behavior of English speakers\, and incorporate a dyadic director-matcher task in order to investigate a hypothesis that the NegFirst principle is driven by communicative factors. This study contributes to a growing body of research which aims to corroborate typological tendencies with behavioral evidence at the individual level. In this talk\, I will share preliminary results which suggest that English-speaking learners do show behavior consistent with a NegFirst bias\, and discuss plans to extend this research to Japanese speakers in the future.\n \nJustin Craft:\nThe Effect of Listener Experience and Social Expectation on Illusory Percepts\n\nABSTRACT\nPerceptual recalibration research has been central in demonstrating that listeners readily adapt to accented speech as listeners gain experience with accented speakers. Likewise\, the sociophonetic literature has demonstrated that listener expectations and experience established through visual or contextual means also appears to drive listener percepts and inferentially aid in efforts to resolve socially conditioned phonetic ambiguities. In this talk\, I'll present preliminary results from one of my dissertation experiments that utilizes McGurk stimuli to probe whether these expectational and recalibratory effects persist in illusory percepts. By breaking the audio-visual integration characteristic of typical speech processing\, the use of illusory stimuli targets whether the percepts listeners experience\, when stripped of socially meaningful acoustic cues\, still show evidence of sociophonetic knowledge that otherwise reflects the variation found in congruent veridical audio-visual signals in the world. \n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact lingadmin@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.
