SUMMARY:Exhibition:Leisure and Luxury in the Age of Nero: The Villas of Oplontis near Pompeii - February 19-May 15\, 2016
DESCRIPTION:Organized in cooperation with the Archaeological Superintendency of Pompeii and the Oplontis Project at the University of Texas\, this international traveling exhibition explores the lavish lifestyle and economic interests of some of ancient Rome’s wealthiest and most powerful citizens\, who vacationed along the Bay of Naples. Julius Caesar\, Cicero\, Augustus\, and Nero all owned villas in this region. With more than 200 objects on loan from Italy\, the exhibition focuses on two structures at Oplontis that were buried when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. One is an enormous luxury villa that may once have belonged to the family of Nero’s second wife Poppaea. The other is a nearby commercial-residential complex—a center for the trade in wine and other produce of villa lands. Together these two establishments speak eloquently of the ways in which the Roman elite built\, maintained\, and displayed their vast wealth\, political power\, and social prestige. In presenting a selection of impressive works of art along with ordinary utilitarian objects\, the exhibition also calls attention to Roman disparities of wealth\, social class\, and consumption. Such disparities were as problematic for Roman society as they are for ours today.\n\nThis exhibition in Ann Arbor will remain open to the public until May 15\, 2016. It will also be shown at the Museum of the Rockies at the Montana State University\, Bozeman (June 17-December 31\, 2016) and the Smith College Museum of Art in Northampton\, Massachusetts (February 3-August 13\, 2017).\n\nOplontis inv. 73412a: Image of gold and emerald necklace courtesy of Pio Foglia\, Fotographica Foglia s.a.s.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Film Screening: I Learn America
DESCRIPTION:One High School\, One School Year\, Five New Americans\n\nThe children of immigration\, here to stay\, are the new Americans. How we fare in welcoming them will determine the nature of this country in the 21st century and beyond. In I Learn America\, five resilient immigrant teenagers come together over a year at the International High School at Lafayette and struggle to learn about and get comfortable with their new land.\n\nThe International High School at Lafayette is a New York City public school dedicated to serving recently arrived immigrant teenagers\, with more than 300 students speaking 24 languages from more than 50 countries. The students strive to master English\, adapt to families they haven’t seen in years\, confront the universal trials of adolescence\, and search for a future they can claim as their own. Through these five vibrant young people\, their stories and struggles\, and their willingness to open their lives and share them with us\, we “learn America.”\n\nFilm screening followed by a facilitated discussion.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition: Research Through Making
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning presents...Research Through Making.\n\nHistorically\, research and creative practice have been constructed as \"opposites.\" This is not an unusual struggle in architecture schools\, particularly in the context of a research university. This perceived tension between design and research is indicative of age-old anxieties within the architecture field to understand its nature as an \"applied art.\" Design can be a purely creative activity not unlike creative practices in music and art. In other cases\, design can be a purely problem solving activity\, not unlike research in engineering and industrial production.\n\nIn its seventh year\, University of Michigan Taubman College's Research Through Making (RTM) Program provides seed funding for faculty research\, worked on by faculty\, students and interdisciplinary experts. The exhibition presents tangible results of their collaborative work.\n\nPresentation of projects will start at 6:00pm in the Art & Architecture Building Auditorium\, with a reception to follow at the Liberty Annex.\n\nResearch Through Making Installations:\n\n\"Tap\"\nAdam Fure\n\n\"Panots & Mosiacs: The Plasticity of Hydraulic Cement through Making\"\nAna Morcillo Pallares and Jonathan Rule\n\n\"Dip and Dive in the D\"\nClaudia Wigger\n\n\"Infundibuliforms: Cable Robot Actuated Kinetic Environments\"\nWes McGee\, Geoffrey Thün\, Kathy Velikov\n\n\"Post Rock\"\nMeredith Miller and Thom Moran\n\nGrant submissions were anonymously evaluated by a distinguished jury from outside the college:\n\nBenjamin Ball\, Lead Artist and Principal\, Ball-Nogues Studio\nBrooke Hodge\, Deputy director\, Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum\nMark Lamster\, Architecture critic\, The Dallas Morning News\n\nThis exhibition runs from March 10 - April 15. \n\nThe Liberty Gallery is located at 305 W. Liberty Street in downtown Ann Arbor. Exhibition hours are Thursday to Sunday from 3:00-7:00pm unless otherwise noted.\n\nAbout University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning:\n\nThe Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan is a leader in interdisciplinary education and research with a focus on creating a more beautiful\, inclusive and better built environment. The college and its alumni are committed to pushing the boundaries of architectural practice\, advancing global engagement\, and significantly enhancing diversity in the profession. The college offers the following degrees: Bachelor of Science in Architecture\, Master of Architecture (currently ranked #6 nationally\; ranked #1 in 2010 by Design Intelligence Report)\, Master of Science in Architecture\, Master of Urban Planning\, Master of Urban Design\, and PhD programs.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Mysteries of Mind Wandering -- please note room change
DESCRIPTION:Professor Sripada\, holding a joint appointment in both Psychiatry and Philosophy at the University of Michigan\, will be giving a talk on \"The Mysteries of Mind Wandering\" this Sunday in the Michigan League. His research interests range from Adult Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder to Substance Use Disorders\, and his publications are as eclectic as they are interesting\, including papers on Will Power\, Free Will\, and Self Expression. More information on Professor Sripada can be found on his website. Sunday's talk will be on the following:During idle moments\, and too often when we are trying to focus on something else\, our minds spontaneously start to wander. The contents seem somewhat random and unconnected: recent memories\, prospections into the future\, inner speech. Over the last decade\, mind wandering has emerged as an important topic in cognitive science. In this meeting\, we'll talk about some emerging theories about what mind wandering is\, what it is for\, and why we do so much of it. Join us for the talk\, followed by audience Q&A. Food will be provided.
