SUMMARY:Exhibition:Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography
DESCRIPTION:More than strict representations of the world we inhabit\, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. Map ≠ Territory deconstructs maps that have been used to subjugate\, appropriate\, and oppress\, as well as the maps that counter that power through emancipation and advocacy. The exhibit critically engages with materials that span from the colonial era to modern-day Detroit.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:MORE Faculty Virtual Workshop: Getting Your Mentoring Relationship Off to a Good Start
DESCRIPTION:This workshop helps enhance the mentoring relationship between the student and faculty mentor by facilitating the development of shared expectations. Mentors and mentees work independently in separate sessions to identify their own objectives and styles\, and consider strategies for dealing with possible challenges. Then\, student-faculty pairs work together to develop a written mentoring plan as a means of codifying some of the most important elements (needs\, goals\, mutual expectations) of a two-way mentoring relationship. Over 85 percent of Rackham doctoral students who have written mentoring plans report those plans to be useful.\nFaculty who have attended a MORE workshop in the past should feel free to join the workshop only for the student-faculty work together (the last hour of the workshop). Registration is still required of both the faculty and the student.\nOptional additional time for developing a mentoring plan is available from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/n8yRV.\nSeparate registration for students is available at https://myumi.ch/e6gNZ.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Two Years Later: Reflecting on the National Response to COVID-19's Racial Disparities
DESCRIPTION:The second event in the COVID-19 reflections series will feature Cameron Webb\, senior policy advisor for COVID-19 equity on the White House COVID-19 Response Team\, in conversation with Luke Shaefer\, faculty director of Poverty Solutions at U-M. The series brings together a diverse group of changemakers\, including national and local policymakers\, journalists\, researchers\, and community leaders\, to (1) meditate on the past and current racial dynamics of COVID-19 in Michigan and Detroit\, and to (2) discuss the policies\, programs\, and practices that have successfully responded to the needs of communities of color disproportionately impacted by the pandemic.\n\nThe first event was April 1\, and the series will end with an event on June 10.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Flash Talk | Portraits and Patrons: The Women of the Villa of the Mysteries in Their Social Context
DESCRIPTION:The identity of the people in the fresco from Room 5 of the Villa of the Mysteries has remained a mystery to us. Are they images of people who really lived? Are they generic? Does the figure of the matron depict the owner of the villa? Join Kelsey Museum curator emerita Elaine Gazda as she discusses her recently published analysis of these figures and the role of the fresco itself as a memorial and heirloom. \n\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators\, staff members\, researchers\, and graduate students talking about their recent research or current projects. Each presentation is followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. Flash Talks are free and open to all visitors. They take place at noon on the first Friday of every month.\n\nJoin us via Zoom at:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/95262537929\nMeeting ID: 952 6253 7929\nPasscode: Kelsey

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Preference Intensity: Some Implications for American Politics
DESCRIPTION:Talk Abstract: Political scientists have long been interested in understanding the intensity of voter preferences\, but this endeavor has rarely been incorporated into the study of representation and disagreements over measurement remain. I measure intensity of preferences using a simple extension of conjoint analysis. I provide some evidence of the face validity of this measurement approach. This strategy requires large samples\, so I use the approximately 500\,000 cases from Nationscape. I show that simple survey marginals do not show large biases when it comes to the balance of intensity in the general population. However there are large differences in intensity across issues. Conservatives care much more about the issues on which they hold conservative views\, and liberals care much more about the issues on which they hold liberal views. This may amplify polarization and affect the outcomes of primary elections. People with moderate views care more about the issues on which their views match the reigning consensus. This contradicts work that argues that moderate views are less deeply held\, and supports the argument that moderate stances are beneficial in general elections.
