SUMMARY:Performance:Johnny Clegg Band
DESCRIPTION:Guitarist Johnny Clegg was born in England but grew up in South Africa\, learning Zulu music (and the Zulu language) from a guitarist who played on a street near his home. Despite constant harassment from police enforcing South Africa's apartheid laws\, Johnny joined with black South African musicians to form the bands Juluka and Savuka\, hugely influential ensembles that laid crucial groundwork for the spread of South African music around the world. In Europe crowds of tens of thousands turn out to see him when they have the chance\, but his North American appearances are once-or-twice-a-decade affairs. Dancer\, anthrologist\, singer\, songwriter\, activist\, French knight—all of these tags fit Johnny Clegg\, but none fully describes the energetic\, passionate human being who has become one of South Africa's greatest exports.
