SUMMARY:Exhibition:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit)\, open now through May 21st.\n\nA public reception will be held on March 9th\, 6:00–9:00 PM\, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.\n\nWe hope you will be able to see the exhibit\, and please be in touch if you have any questions.\n\nHumanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so\, those in prison reclaim their humanity.\n\nMuseum hours\nThursdays–Saturdays: 10:00 AM–5:00PM \nSundays: 1:00–5:00 PM

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Openings: Title Pages in the History of Printed Books
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the creativity and utility of an essential part of practically every modern book\, the title page. Such pages signal and inform\, incite pleasure and intrigue\, as well as conceal and mislead. The works shown here from the holdings of the University of Michigan Library illuminate critical moments in the history of books. Students in a Fall 2022 History Lab class researched and created the exhibit.\n\nThe exhibit is available for viewing in the Special Collections Research Center (on the sixth floor of the Hatcher Library)\, Monday-Friday\, 10am-4:30pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UN/EARTH
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

Through Larry's eyes\, we observe his human family\, and his owner Diana. Larry hides in Diana’s suitcase as she travels to her job on the Moon and experiences weightlessness. Once on the Moon\, Larry observes how the Earth looks a lot like the Moon did from his porch back home.\n\nThe state-of-the-art Planetarium & Dome Theater at the U-M Museum of Natural History transports visitors beyond distant stars and back in time from the comfort of reclining seats. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ChE SEMINAR: “Embracing Immunodiversity: How Investigating Monocyte Phenotype can Improve Nanotechnology Design and Efficacy”
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n With the emergence of immunomodulating nanotechnologies\, cell-based therapies and a growing number of individuals living with one or more pre-existing chronic inflammatory diseases there is an urgent need to understand how immunodiversity—or variation in individual immune responses based on environmental and intrinsic features—effect therapeutic outcomes. My research group develops real-time bioluminescence cellular biosensor systems to explore the temporal and spatial dynamics of monocyte differentiation and polarization following infiltration into tumor\, bacterial/viral infection\, and pre-eclampsia microenvironments. For example\, we explore how environmental stimuli such as GM-CSF and M-CSF effect monocyte phenotype during differentiation into macrophages. In addition\, we use the monocyte biosensors as a diagnostic tool to screen nanotherapeutic libraries for their polarization and/or reprogramming capabilities.\n\n Our studies show differences between naïve and disease-trained monocyte interactions with nanoparticle systems that we believe can be used to reverse engineering nanotechnologies and inform drug pharmacokinetic models. In the long-term\, we hope our exploration of immunodiversity and response to biomaterials increases inclusion of samples used in biomedical research and lead the greater translational successes in the clinic. \n \nBio: \n Elizabeth Wayne is a TED Fellow and Assistant Professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. Elizabeth Wayne works at the interface of immunology and nanoparticle engineering\, by exploring the function of monocytes as a cellular theranostic. Her group designs chitosan-based nanoparticles that can modulate macrophage phenotype under inflammatory contexts. Her group designs monocyte biosensors to enable real-time measurements of macrophage polarization. Currently\, she is applying these concepts to investigate air-pollution\, lung regeneration\, atherosclerosis\, pre-eclampsia\, and cancer. Dr. Wayne’s research has competitively been funding through NSF\, Genentech\, and a prestigious NIH R35 Maximizing Investigator’s Research Award.\n\n Dr. Wayne is a science communicator who uses her platform to discuss the future of immunoengineering and issues related to underrepresented minorities in science. In 2017\, she gave a TED Talk on immunoengineering which currently has been viewed over 1.5 million times. Dr. Wayne was featured in the Super Cool Scientists: A Women in Science Coloring Book. She is also the co-host of the show PhDivas\, a podcast that tells the stories of women in leadership and higher education. Dr. Wayne has been interviewed and written in various platforms including PBS News Hour Brief but Spectacular Series\, Aspen Ideas Health Festival\, Nature Careers\, Nature Medicine\, Bust Magazine\, The Atlantic\, and the LA Times.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | Fields of Memory: Movement and Stasis in the Noh Play *Ohara gokō*
DESCRIPTION:If you wish to attend this event via Zoom\, please register at http://myumi.ch/kyXMk\n\nThis talk explores the staging of the noh repertoire’s most literary plays\, *Ohara gokō*\, a work based on “The Initiates’ Scroll (*Kanjō no maki*)\,” a “secret text (*hiji*)” associated with the *Tale of the Heike* (*Heike monogatari*). Through a close reading of the play\, including stage directions and the use of set pieces and props\, we will explore the role played by invisible and imaginary spaces in a play focused on memory and loss.\n \n Elizabeth Oyler is associate professor and chair in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh. Her research focuses on medieval narrative and drama connected to the Genpei War. *Cultural Imprints: War and Memory in the Samurai Age*\, which she co-edited with Katherine Saltzman-Li\, is her most recent publication.\n \n This lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.
