SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Alum Connection: Turning Passion into Policy Advocacy with Cachavious English
DESCRIPTION:Cachavious “Chay” English currently serves as a Policy Strategist and Managing Counsel for Ford Motor Company with a primary focus on policies related to trade\, supply chain resiliency\, critical minerals\, ESG\, tax and economic incentives. Most recently he served as a Vice President at BGR Group\, a premier DC lobbying firm\, where he focused his work on similar issues. Prior to BGR\, Chay served as Chief of Staff for Rep. Terri Sewell (D-AL)\, a senior Member of the House Ways and Means Committee.\n\nCachavious has said before that sometimes you have to test different roles and industries early in your career to determine what you want or don’t want. By allowing himself to pursue his interests and passions\, Cachavious found a way to marry those passions\, interests\, and developed skills into specific opportunities . Join Cachavious English (’07 AfroAmerican and African Studies) as he explains how he went about crafting a career built around the passions he developed as an undergrad -- and how you can too. Cachavious will also explain how he went about choosing opportunities that were best for him. \n\n\nYou should attend this session if you are:\n- An LSA undergraduate.\n- Interested in building a career in law\, government relations\, or public policy.\n- Curious about working within the federal legislative branch or learning about legislative processes.\n- Thinking about law school after your undergraduate degree.\n\nWhat you will gain by attending:\n- Open your mind to career possibilities and potential opportunities within government and the private sector.\n- Gain insights into the different roles available within a congressional office.\n- Learn ways in which you can advocate for people in your community.\n- Learn how multinational corporations determine and represent their policy interests domestically and abroad and balance it with societal well-being.\n\nRSVP NOW to reserve your spot. By signing up\, you will receive an email with details on how to attend this workshop the morning of the session.\n\nAbout Cachavious:\nChay is originally from Selma\, Al and received his BA degree from the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. After graduation\, Chay attended the University of Alabama School of Law where he was active in the National Black Law Students Association and the Trial Advocacy Competition Team. He received his JD and was admitted to the Alabama State Bar in 2010. Chay is active in the local DC community and enjoys volunteering with various organizations.\n\nChay joined the private sector after nearly a decade of working and advocating on Capitol Hill for bipartisan solutions and legislation that promoted economic development\, social equity and innovation. As one of Rep. Sewell’s key advisors\, he was responsible for managing the staff\, advising on issues\, implementing legislative strategies and managing Rep. Sewell’s duties as Chief Deputy Whip. He also managed her involvement in the Congressional Black Caucus and New Dem Coalition.\n\nVirtual Event accessibility statement: \nThe LSA Opportunity Hub aims to deliver inclusive and accessible experiences and welcomes all LSA students to participate. This event will be hosted on Zoom (learn more about Zoom accessibility) and can be accessed by phone or computer. Presentation materials may be shared in advance if requested\, and live captioning will be provided. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar - Hybrid: Characterizing past communities to build future ones: *lessons from Caribbean conservation paleobiology *
DESCRIPTION:Our weekly seminar series featuring internal and external speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).\n\nAbstract:\nThe Caribbean is one of the most well-studied biodiversity hotspots\, but the diversity of today’s Caribbean is only a fraction of what once existed there\, as natural and anthropogenic processes have contributed to extinction and extirpation across multiple taxonomic groups. Given this long-term history of environmental perturbations and human impacts\, paleobiology is well-suited to inform ongoing conservation needs in the Caribbean\, which continues to be impacted by habitat degradation\, species introductions\, and other global change phenomena. I show how fossil\, archaeological\, and ecological data elucidate patterns of biodiversity loss and resilience\, with direct implications for conservation management. While conservation paleobiology has significant potential in the Caribbean\, it also faces major challenges in implementation\, in part due to colonial histories and practices of parachute science. I summarize how this colonial legacy perpetuates knowledge and resource gaps\, and outline ways in which we can move toward an equitable conservation paleobiology in the Caribbean and elsewhere.\n\nContact eebsemaccess@umich.edu for Zoom password at least 2 hours prior to event.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC-CM Seminar | Many-Electron Effects and Light-Matter Interactions at Nanoscale
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will start from introducing a general picture of light-matter interactions in nanoscale materials and the first-principles many-body perturbation approach for calculating excited states\, such as quasiparticles and excitons. Then I will focus on many-electron interactions in two-dimensional (2D) moiré crystals. We propose a way to enhance the crucial moiré potential by manipulating the coupling between quasiparticles and carrier plasmons. Our calculation shows that this mechanism can effectively enhance the quasiparticle moiré potential by a few times of magnitude\, providing an excellent opportunity to control and observe correlated Hubbard physics in 2D moiré crystals. In the second part of the talk\, I will switch to the second-order light-matter interactions in PT-symmetric materials. Using the quantum perturbation theory\, we predict that light with different polarizations can selectively drive sizable charge current or pure spin current in emerging antiferromagnetic 2D structures or topological materials.
