The only problem is that the two eldest sons have been at odds since their father passed away and refuse to be in the same room at the same time.\n \nHer big reveal is spoiled when the boys hear via the grapevine about their mother’s pending marriage and come together to voice their disapproval. Now it’s up to Aisha\, her fiancé\, and her daughters-in-law to bring the sons around to her way of thinking using the one thing they can all agree on–the *barakat*. *Barakat*\, an Arabic word meaning blessings\, is a story about celebrating life\, culture\, and the importance of family.\n \nFilm Background & Facts:\n*Barakat* is a 2020 South African family drama film directed by Amy Jephta and produced by Ephraim Gordon. It is the first Afrikaans-language Muslim feature film produced in South Africa. *Barakat*\, an Urdu word meaning “Blessings\,” was told with gentle humanity stemming from filmmakers with lived experience. This is a rare and insightful glimpse into the heart of the Muslim\, Malay\, mixed-race community of Cape Town\, seen through the prism of one family’s travails as they grapple with the ups and downs of life\, love\, and familial relationships in a way that is recognizable and relatable.\n\n\n\n__________________\nThis African Muslim Film Festival is brought to you by the Global Islamic Studies Center and cosponsored by the African Studies Center\, Arab and Muslim American Studies\, the Center for Middle East and North African Studies\, Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum\, the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, the Department of Film\, Television\, and Media\, the Department of Middle Eastern Studies\, the Department of Political Science\, and the Sawyer Seminar on the Africana Muslim and Genealogies of White Supremacy.\n\n\nVisit http://watch.eventive.org/amff for more details.\n\nWant to hear about similar events from U-M Islamic Studies? SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Era of Autonomy in Space Exploration – It’s Finally Here!
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nFor decades\, space exploration has conjured visions of advanced technology. However\, for much of our history\, spaceflight has made limited use of autonomy and onboard computational capability. This has changed in the past few years\, particularly at more distant locations or in applications where the number of collaborative sensors is large. This seminar will review the systems trade between ground-in-the-loop and autonomous operations from a risk perspective\, discuss recent advances in space exploration enabled by autonomy\, and highlight the new class of spaceflight missions possible in the coming decade. Recent examples from the speaker’s experience working with the Mars Perseverance\, Ingenuity\, and DART project teams will be referenced.\n\nSpeaker Bio:\nDr. Robert D. Braun has more than 35 years experience as a space systems engineer\, technologist\, and organizational leader. He has contributed to the formulation\, development\, and operation of multiple space flight missions and is a recognized authority in hypersonics technology and the development of and entry\, descent and landing systems. Dr. Braun presently serves on the executive leadership team of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. He previously served as Director for Planetary Science at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory\, Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado Boulder\, a faculty member of the Georgia Institute of Technology\, and on the technical staff of the NASA Langley Research Center. In 2010-2011\, Dr. Braun served as the first NASA Chief Technologist in more than a decade with responsibility for development of the Agency’s technology and innovation policies and programs. He created and led the initial implementation of a spectrum of NASA technology programs designed to mature the capabilities required for our nation’s future in space. Dr. Braun is a member of the National Academy of Engineering\, a Fellow of the AIAA and AAS\, and the author or co-author of over 300 technical publications.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Topology Seminar: Generating the homology of sliding squares in a rectangle
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The configuration space of n ordered unit squares sliding in a p by q rectangle is a subspace of the configuration space of n ordered points in the plane\, which is the classifying space of the pure braid group. The homology of the pure braid group is generated by cycles that have a nice geometric description. To what extent is this true of squares in a rectangle? Small computations suggest that some more intricate generators may be needed.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Climate & Space Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Processes controlling the transition to a seasonally ice-free Arctic Ocean in a warming world\n\nAbstract: Observations show dramatic Arctic sea ice loss and Arctic warming in recent decades. As greenhouse gases increase and the Earth’s surface warms\, projecting when the Arctic Ocean may become ice-free\, and the resulting impacts is of broad interest to those living in the Arctic and beyond. Numerical coupled models are the main tool for making such future projections. Yet\, projecting sea ice loss is hard with these tools because it is challenging to constrain physical process uncertainty\, unpredictable climate variability\, and differences in climate drivers. In this talk\, I will present an overview of research over last decade analyzing processes controlling the transition to a seasonally ice-free Arctic Ocean in a warming world. Motivated by this overview\, I will present recent work published in the Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems (https://doi.org/10.1029/2021MS002679) in which we analyzed the influence of surface sea ice surface melt on Arctic Ocean phase while also controlling for all other confounding factors such as the amount of global warming and unpredictable climate variability.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Diagnosing disease on a microchip: Finding nanoscale needles in a nanoscale haystack
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The transformative growth in microelectronics in the latter half of the 20th century was fueled fundamentally by the ability to miniaturize complex circuits onto chips. The impact of this has been profound– computing is pervasive and portable and communication is instant and global. My research aims to harness this same engineering approach to solve high impact problems in medical diagnostics. To accomplish this goal my lab develops hybrid microchips\, where microfluidics are built directly on top of semiconductor chips. In this talk I will focus on recent work at Penn on 'digital asays.' Digital assays — in which ultra-sensitive molecular measurements are made by performing millions of parallel experiments in picoliter droplets — have generated enormous enthusiasm due to their single molecule resolution. These assays have incredible untapped potential for disease diagnostics but are currently confined to laboratory settings due to the instrumentation necessary to generate\, control\, and measure tens of millions of droplets. To overcome this challenge\, we are developing a hybrid microelectronic / microfluidic chip to ‘unlock’ droplet-based assays for mobile use. Our microDroplet Fluorescence Detector (µDFD) takes inspiration from cellular networks\, in which phones are identified by their carrier frequency and not their particular location. In collaboration with physicians at The Abramson Cancer Center\, we are demonstrating the power of this approach by developing a multiplexed exosome-based diagnostic for the early detection of pancreatic cancer.\n\nBio: The Issadore lab combines microelectronics\, microfluidics\, nanomaterials\, and machine learning to solve big problems in healthcare. We create miniaturized platforms for the diagnosis of disease\, we develop new platforms to manufacture micro and nanomaterials\, and we dip our toes into an assortment of other areas where we can leverage our engineering training to improve healthcare. This work requires an interdisciplinary approach in which engineers\, scientists\, and physicians work together in teams.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CANCELLED: EIHS Lecture: Writing Enslaved Women’s Histories from the Crevices of the Archive
DESCRIPTION:This presentation offers an intimate portrait of the life of an enslaved woman\, known as Abba\, who appears multiple times in the diary of a slaveholder in eighteenth-century Jamaica. Abba’s life\, like many others chronicled in the diary\, is incompletely established in the literature\, a pathetic figure overcome by violence\, domination\, and a demanding labor regime. Shifting analytic gaze and narrative voice to the enslaved\, this discussion uncovers enslaved women’s affective creativity and configuration of a life aligned with their maternal and communal values.\n\nSasha Turner is associate professor of history at The Johns Hopkins University and is the author of Contested Bodies: Pregnancy\, Childrearing and Slavery in Jamaica. Professor Turner has received many awards for her research\, including from the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians\, Southern Association of Women Historians\, African American Intellectual History Society\, Association of Black Women Historians\, and North American Conference on British Studies. She is working on a new project on slavery and emotions.\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Differential Equations Semianr: Late time tail of waves on dynamic asymptotically flat spacetimes of odd space dimensions
DESCRIPTION:I will present an upcoming work with J. Luk (Stanford)\, where we develop a general method for understanding the late time tail for solutions to wave equations on asymptotically flat spacetimes with odd spatial dimensions\, which is applicable to nonlinear problems on dynamical backgrounds. In addition to its inherent interest\, such information is crucial for studying problems involving the interaction of waves with a spatially localized object\; indeed\, our motivation for developing this method comes from the Strong Cosmic Censorship Conjecture. I will explain how our method recovers and refines Price's law for linear problems on stationary backgrounds\, and also how it shows that the late time tails are in general different(!) from the linear stationary case in the presence of nonlinearity and/or a dynamical background.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Elements and Edges: Inhabitable and Uninhabitable Worlds in Medieval Encyclopaedias
DESCRIPTION:Encyclopaedias portray the earth as perfectly round\, nestled within concentric circles of the elements. Yet they also present a jagged earth\, with borders between inhabitable and uninhabitable worlds creating geographical divisions that combine in the encyclopaedic environment with natural-historical taxonomies and anthropocentric narratives. This talk will argue that encyclopaedias interrelate concepts of elemental\, human and animal bodies with landscapes shaped by histories of geological change\, empire and epistemological rupture.
