SUMMARY:Exhibition:Openings: Title Pages in the History of Printed Books
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the creativity and utility of an essential part of practically every modern book\, the title page. Such pages signal and inform\, incite pleasure and intrigue\, as well as conceal and mislead. The works shown here from the holdings of the University of Michigan Library illuminate critical moments in the history of books. Students in a Fall 2022 History Lab class researched and created the exhibit.\n\nThe exhibit is available for viewing in the Special Collections Research Center (on the sixth floor of the Hatcher Library)\, Monday-Friday\, 10am-4:30pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sense of Self: The Islamic Contemporary
DESCRIPTION:Despite recent panels and scholarship aiming to dispel the notion\, there is a conception that contemporary art and religion are incompatible. \n\nWhen paired with the Islamophobic sentiment that Islam is destructive\, rather than constructive like artistic practices and that it even forbids many forms of artistic production\, there is a presumption that contemporary art that engages with Islam as religion and faith (rather than simply as identity) cannot exist. \n\nThere is an additional assumption that those who identify as women\, queer\, trans\, and non-binary are unlikely to engage with Islam in their work outside of critique\, because of the belief that Islam is inherently (and uniquely) oppressive of and therefore contradictory to individuals who identify as such. \n\nIn an attempt to disabuse viewers of these notions\, as well as give a space of exploration to these often overlooked or excluded voices\, this exhibition brings together women\, queer\, trans\, and non-binary Muslim artists who explore their connection to religion\, their other identities (be those related to their race\, ethnicity\, gender\, sexuality\, or status as artists)\, and their practices.\n\nParticipating Artists:\nNour Ballout\nYasmine Diaz\nArshia Fatima Haq\nYasmine Kasem\nManal Shoukair\nSaba Taj

DESCRIPTION:\"Inference for Longitudinal Data After Adaptive Sampling\"\n\nAbstract: Adaptive sampling methods\, such as reinforcement learning (RL) and bandit algorithms\, are increasingly used for the real-time personalization of interventions in digital applications like mobile health and education. As a result\, there is a need to be able to use the resulting adaptively collected user data to address a variety of inferential questions\, including questions about time-varying causal effects. However\, current methods for statistical inference on such data (a) make strong assumptions regarding the environment dynamics\, e.g.\, assume the longitudinal data follows a Markovian process\, or (b) require data to be collected with one adaptive sampling algorithm per user\, which excludes algorithms that learn to select actions using data collected from multiple users. These are major obstacles preventing the use of adaptive sampling algorithms more widely in practice. In this work\, we proved statistical inference for the common Z-estimator based on adaptively sampled data. The inference is valid even when observations are non-stationary and highly dependent over time\, and (b) allow the online adaptive sampling algorithm to learn using the data of all users. Furthermore\, our inference method is robust to miss-specification of the reward models used by the adaptive sampling algorithm. This work is motivated by our work in designing the Oralytics oral health clinical trial in which an RL adaptive sampling algorithm will be used to select treatments\, yet valid statistical inference is essential for conducting primary data analyses after the trial is over.\n\nhttp://people.seas.harvard.edu/~samurphy/

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:The CIC invites students of all academic backgrounds and varying research experience to join the CIC Student Working Groups. Students around the world will join a community of young professionals and researchers interested in the future of COVID-19 and ongoing pandemic research.\n\nOn January 17th\, 2023\, the first successful meeting of the  student working groups was conducted with more than 20 students joining from various locations around the globe. The meeting was organized to discuss the challenges and opportunities that students have faced during the COVID-19 pandemic and to develop strategies to pursue research and projects for future impacts. The meeting was a great success\, with students sharing their experiences\, ideas and resources\, and discussing ways to collaborate and support one another. The meeting ended with a plan to continue the meeting regularly and to establish a shared platform to share resources and ideas. Overall\, the meeting was an important step in building a community of students who are committed to exploring pre and post COVID-19 pandemic impact and implications.
