SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Alum Connection with Adam Fivenson: The Intersection of Political Advocacy and Technology
DESCRIPTION:Around the globe\, once-stable democracies are facing rising political tension\, polarization and stagnation amid the sixteenth year of what Freedom House\, a DC-based nonprofit\, has termed a global autocratic expansion. Adam Fivenson’s work focuses on the impact of disinformation narratives on democracies around the globe\, studying its use by autocratic actors to corrode healthy information ecosystems\, and elevating the work of civil society organizations and journalists working to counter it. Prior to joining the National Endowment for Democracy\, Adam worked for 12 years in the international development sector advising governments and international NGOs on the application of new technologies and design methods that respond to challenges of democratic governance. Join for a conversation tracking Adam’s path from Michigan’s Residential College to a career that has spanned 5 continents and 40 countries.\n\nAbout Adam:\nAdam Fivenson is an advocate for democracy and human rights in an increasingly digital world. He has led the design of an award winning citizen engagement app for governments in Guatemala\; trained small businesses and civil society organizations in data science for policy advocacy in Cambodia\, Tanzania\, and Rwanda\; and researched the impact of new technologies on information ecosystems across Central America\, East Africa\, and Southeast Asia. He currently researches and convenes around resolving the disinformation challenge for the National Endowment for Democracy. Adam is a periodic Adjunct Professor at Georgetown's School of Foreign Service\, co-host of the Technology for Democracy Happy Hour\, and the author of Disinformation Toolkit 2.0 and Lean HCD. His work has been featured on This is HCD and ICTWorks. He has a master’s degree in foreign service from Georgetown University\, and a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Michigan. Adam lives in Washington\, D.C.\, with his wife and two children.\n\n \nYou should attend this session if you are:\n-An undergraduate U-M LSA student \n-Interested in pursuing a career in global affairs and communications\n-Interested in democracy\, human rights\, and international NGOs \n\n\nWhat you’ll gain by attending:\n-Make a valuable connection with a successful LSA alum ready to help you\n-Get ideas for how to enter a career in political advocacy \n-Gain tips for taking your career international\n\n\nRSVP NOW to be part of the conversation. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Political Economy Workshop (PEW)
DESCRIPTION:\"How Could States Use Nuclear Weapons? Four Models After the Bomb.\" \n\nAbstract: According to the Theory of the Nuclear Revolution (TNR)\, nuclear weapons bring peace between the great powers because they are the ultimate tools of deterrence. The nuclear balance matters little once states have reliable second strikes. U.S. pursuit of nuclear superiority during the Cold War was therefore irrational. This theory is currently under attack. This paper reviews some recent critiques of TNR and proposes an alternative interpretation. It is very difficult to learn about the effectiveness of nuclear policy. Crises are rare and their outcomes are often overdetermined. U.S. pursuit of nuclear superiority could appear sensible\, but it did not emerge from an optimal learning process. Superiority can enhance coercive leverage\, but it does so by increasing the risk of disaster\, with first-strike capabilities being especially destabilizing. This risk of disaster should be factored into any assessment of nuclear policy.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Special HEP-Astro Seminar | The Partonic Picture and the SM Expectation of High-Energy Lepton Colliders
DESCRIPTION:After the triumph of discovering the Higgs boson at the CERN Large Hadron Collider\, people are getting increasingly interested in studying the Higgs properties in detail and searching for the physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). A multi-TeV lepton collider provides a clean experimental environment for both the Higgs precision measurements and the discovery of new particles. In high-energy leptonic collisions\, the collinear splittings of the leptons and electroweak (EW) gauge bosons are the dominant phenomena\, which could be well described by the parton picture. In the parton picture\, all the SM particles should be treated as partons that radiated off the beam particles\, and the electroweak parton distribution functions (EW PDFs) should be adopted as a proper description for partonic collisions of the initial states. Along this line\, future ultra-high-energy lepton colliders can be treated as EW versions of the LHC. In our work\, both the EW and the QCD sectors are included in the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) formalism to perturbatively resum the potential large logarithms emerging from the initial-state radiation (ISR). Using the EW PDF formalism\, I will present the SM expectations of a possible high-energy electron-positron collider and a possible high-energy muon collider\, which shall be included in the guideline of future analysis.\n

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:AE585 Chairs Distinguished Seminar Series: Advancing Air Mobility\, a Discussion of the Future EVTOL World
DESCRIPTION:Nick Lappos\nSenior Fellow\nSikorsky a Lockheed Martin Company\n\nAbout the lecture:\nA committee of the National Academy of Engineering released a report in the spring of 2020 that discusses the future world of advanced air mobility and presents a national blueprint for what that system might look like. Also identified were the areas that needed further work to ensure the successful introduction of air vehicles into that space. This presentation will discuss what that future world might look like\, what the technical and social barriers to the introduction of these concepts are\, and the path ahead for our society as our rural and urban areas adapt to low altitude vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. The discussion will include a brief introduction to the air vehicles\, the key players in the development of the future system\, and some of the barriers that must be overcome to ensure successful adaptation to that future. It will be sufficient time for questions from the audience to spark further understanding.\n\nBio:\nNick Lappos is Lockheed Martin Senior Fellow\, and an Aerospace Engineering graduate of Georgia Tech. At Sikorsky Aircraft he served as program director for the S-92® helicopter during its development\, where it earned the 2002 Robert J. Collier Trophy. He also served as director of Test Engineering and Chief Research and Development test pilot\, logging more than 8\,500 hours in over 70 different types of helicopters. Lappos holds 25 patents and three world records. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and their Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board. \n\nLappos was a vice president for Gulfstream Aerospace Corp.\, and senior vice president and chief technology officer for Bell Helicopter. His honors include Dean's List\, Tau Beta Pi\, and Sigma Gamma Tau. He is a member of the Academy of Distinguished Alumni of Georgia Tech\, a recipient of the Sir Barnes Wallis Medal from the UK Guild of Air Pilots and Navigators\, and an Honorary Fellow and Technical Fellow of the Vertical Flight Society\, a recipient of their Frederick Feinberg Award\, as well as their 2019 Nikolsky Honorary Lectureship. He received the Society of Experimental Test Pilots Tenhoff Award and the Twirly Bird’s Les Morris Award. He is an Associate Fellow in the AIAA. He is Chairman of the Vertical Lift Consortium. He is a decorated veteran of the Vietnam war\, where he flew Cobra helicopters.\n\nView in Boeing Lecture Hall\, 1109 FXB or Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/91746715474.
