SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Hot Flashes at Work? The Disclosure Dilemma for Menopausal Women
DESCRIPTION:Middle age is the golden age for employees\, with assumptions of greater expertise and stability resulting in being “leadership material”. Middle age also brings new experiences for those with female reproductive organs – namely\, menopause – about which organizational scholarship is largely silent. Prior research shows that women are embarrassed to share their menopausal status at work\, but vasomotor symptoms (“hot flashes”) -- sweating and flushing – are a common and observable experience that may “out” her menopausal identity. I will discuss how menopause is a “taboo” at work\, drawing on the stigma and disclosure literature to propose that menopausal stigma constrains leadership opportunities for women and what can be done about it. Describing findings from a series of experimental vignette methodology studies\, I will answer the following questions: 1) What is menopause and why is it relevant to study in organizational contexts? 2) Does menopausal status evoke less favorable stereotypes than middle-age in ways that constrain leadership outcomes for women? 3) Does concealing or disclosing menopausal status from work colleagues improve judgments of leadership potential? In short\, I aim to share why it is both prevalent and relevant to study menopause in organizational science\, and what we can do to reduce the potential for biased decisions about leader potential.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Ada's Room: Realms in Translation
DESCRIPTION:*Please note--Location change as of March 29*\n\nSharon Dodua Otoo is a bestselling author\, activist\, curator\, and publicist. Her debut German-language short story\, Herr Gröttrup setzt sich hin [Herr Gröttrup Sits Down] was awarded the 2016 Ingeborg Bachmann Prize\, the highest accolade for German-language short fiction. Born in London\, England\, the daughter of Ghanaian immigrants\, Otoo has lived and worked most of her adult life in Germany. Although Otoo publishes extensively in both English and German\, her recent work\, including her first novel\, the 2021 Adas Raum [Ada’s Room]\, were written in German. Merging Afrofuturism with German Realism and highlighting the inheritance of radical Black transnational feminist thought in contemporary Berlin-based activism\, Otoo has quickly developed a reputation as one of the most exciting and influential voices in Germany today.\n\nAs a special session of its Colloquium Series\, the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures is excited to welcome Sharon Dodua Otoo to celebrate the English-language publication of Ada’s Room in conversation with her translator\, Dr. Jon Cho-Polizzi\, 2022 LSA Collegiate Fellow and Assistant Professor of German.\n\n Please pre-register for this event using this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/u/2/d/e/1FAIpQLSegojPbh-DxawTvxVIvdspsG1npr7CFUnQ5ap21cguxw4pLGQ/viewform?usp=sf_link\n\nThis event has been made possible with generous co-sponsorship from the Department of Comparative Literature\, the Department of English\, and the Rackham Interdisciplinary Workshop Alamanya: Transnational German Studies.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Honors Film Series
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Honors Film series is a two-part study in the art of cinematography: The general composition of a scene\; the lighting of the set or location\; the choice of cameras\, lenses\, filters\, and film stock\; camera angle and movements\; as well as the integration of visual effects using Cinema’s golden rule: Show\, don’t tell.About the films: Koyaanisqatsi consists of slow motion and time-lapse cinematography of cities and natural landscapes across the United States. The film is a visual tone poem containing neither dialogue nor a vocalized narration\; being\, rather\, a juxtaposition of images and music that reflects this Native American Hopi word meaning “life out of balance.” The film was selected in 2000 for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being “culturally\, aesthetically\, or historically significant.” (1 hour\, 26 minutes) | March 17th from 2-4pmKestrel's Eye is unlike virtually any nature movie ever made. Filmed over several years\, it is the portrait of a family of European falcons (kestrels) who live in a church tower above a small Swedish village. The amazing cinematography was nominated for Sweden’s Oscar (the Guldbagge Award for Best Cinematography) in 1998 for capturing the intimacy of these birds’ lives through what the Merrimack Valley Sunday calls an “utterly mesmerizing and startlingly original film.” (1 hour\, 29 minutes) | March 31st from 2-4pmAttending both film viewings and the reflections immediately following the show will earn you one Engagement Point towards the Sophomore Honors Award.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social Research with Unstructured Data: Connection Series
DESCRIPTION:Social science increasingly uses data that requires advanced tools and algorithms. Preparing text\, audio\, and video data for analysis and running those analyses involves linking contemporary computational tools with datasets and major research challenges in ways that cut across disciplines. Building bridges between data scientists who develop the tools to analyze these data and social scientists who have datasets to address research questions in unprecedented ways that could benefit from them is critical for both opening the world of these new data and refining the tools for analysis.\n \nThe Social Research with Unstructured Data: Connection Series\, jointly sponsored by MIDAS\, the AI Lab and ISR\, is designed to build connections between social scientists and data scientists to improve scholarship in both arenas. Scholars in both groups present research vision and cutting-edge methodology that could benefit from additional interdisciplinary collaboration and theorizing. The series connects faculty\, research scientists\, postdoctoral\, and graduate students to help build major research projects from their vision\, find the right methods for their data\, identify collaborators\, or find scholars who can help trial run the tools they have developed. \n \nEvents will be held from 2:00-3:30 PM in ISR 6050 (426 Thompson Street)\, with meetings in January\, February\, March\, April\, and May. Refreshments provided. We encourage you to sign up ahead of time: https://myumi.ch/7eZWG For more information\, or if you are interested in presenting work in progress at this series\, please contact Beth Uberseder (ubersbe@umich.edu).\n \nSpeakers TBA.
