SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Curriculum / Collection 2021
DESCRIPTION:In Curriculum / Collection\, an incredible variety of University of Michigan courses take material form. Collected for each course are objects that address the nature of reality\, imagination\, and vision in relation to politics\, social action\, science\, mathematics and more. \n \nWorking in collaboration with University faculty\, the works in this exhibition were selected for their capacity to provoke engagement with the guiding questions and themes of their specific courses\, while also offering students material and inspiration for research projects in their areas of study. The exhibition demonstrates some of the diverse and creative ways art plays a central role in learning across the disciplines. It also asks us to consider what we can learn from art objects across an infinite variety of specialties and subject matter.\n \nHere you’ll be able to explore the collections designed for each course\, dive into the works themselves\, and hear from the professors and students about how they are engaging with art and objects in new ways. Who knows\, maybe you’ll learn something surprising along the way\, too.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick\, the Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund\, and P.J. and Julie Solit.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Nabarun Deb\, PhD Candidate\, Department of Statistics\, Columbia University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In recent years\, the problem of optimal transport (see e.g.\, Villani (2003)) has received significant attention in statistics and machine learning due to its powerful geometric properties. In this talk\, we introduce the optimal transport problem and present concrete applications of this theory in statistics. In particular\, we will propose a general framework for distribution-free nonparametric testing in multi-dimensions\, based on a notion of \"multivariate ranks\" defined using the theory of optimal transport. We demonstrate the applicability of this approach by constructing exactly distribution-free tests for two classical nonparametric problems: (i) testing for the equality of two multivariate distributions\, and (ii) testing for mutual independence between two random vectors. We investigate the consistency and asymptotic distributions of these tests\, both under the null and local contiguous alternatives. We further study their local power and asymptotic (Pitman) efficiency\, and show that a subclass of these tests achieve attractive efficiency lower bounds that mimic the remarkable efficiency results of Hodges\nand Lehmann (1956) and Chernoff and Savage (1958). To the best of our knowledge\, these are the first collection of multivariate exactly distribution-free tests that provably achieve such attractive efficiency lower bounds.\n\nFinally\, we also study the rates of convergence of the estimated optimal transport maps\, which are of pivotal importance in generative modeling\, domain adaptation\, etc. We will show that the natural plugin estimators for these maps achieve minimax optimal rates of convergence without any tuning parameters.\n\nhttps://nabarund.github.io/

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Hybrid self-assembled nanomaterials from proteins\, peptides\, and DNA
DESCRIPTION:The ability to design materials that mimic the complexity and functionality of biological systems is a long standing goal of nanotechnology\, with applications in medicine\, energy\, and fundamental science. Biological molecules such as proteins\, peptides\, and DNA possess a rich palette of self-assembly motifs and chemical functional diversity\, and are attractive building blocks for the synthesis of such nanomaterials. In this talk\, we will describe research in creating hybrid materials that incorporate proteins and peptides with DNA nanotechnology to create cages\, nanofibers\, and 3D crystals with a high degree of programmability and nanoscale resolution. Key to these endeavors will be (bio)molecular design\, organic chemistry for linking components in a site-specific fashion\, and the tuning of multiple self-assembly \"modes\" to create hybrid structures. Although the talk will focus on the fundamental chemistry and self-assembly of these systems\, we will also discuss potential applications in areas such as targeted cargo delivery\, biomaterials for regenerative medicine\, biophysical devices\, and synthesis of virus- and antibody-mimetic nanostructures.

SUMMARY:Presentation:CCN Forum: Episodic Memory Mechanisms in Health and Disease
DESCRIPTION:Memory is the sum of who we are. It is the bridge to our past and future. It takes a fleeting moment in our experience and allows it to last indefinitely. It stretches our consciousness over a lifetime and allows us to enjoy meaningful and fulfilling lives. Simply put\, without memory\, humanity as we know it could not exist. Yet\, for something so essential and ubiquitous\, we still know little about how it works. This talk will specifically focus on one type of memory\, episodic memory\, and how we can operationally define and study it using a computational or information processing approach. How does episodic memory change as we get older? What neurobiological mechanisms underlie age-related memory loss? Can we distinguish between normal age-related changes in cognition and changes related to Alzheimer’s disease? Finally\, how we can use this circuit-based approach to studying cognition to better diagnose cognitive disorders?
