SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Methods of Survey Sampling - Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Methods of Survey Sampling\n\nOpen for registration!\n\nJune 6 - July 29\, 2022\n10:00am-12:30pm EST\nT/Th\n\nA fundamental feature of many sample surveys is a probability sample of subjects. Probability sampling requires rigorous application of mathematical principles to the selection process. Methods of Survey Sampling is a moderately advanced course in applied statistics\, with an emphasis on the practical problems of sample design\, which provides students with an understanding of principles and practice in skills required to select subjects and analyze sample data. Topics covered include stratified\, clustered\, systematic\, and multi-stage sample designs\, unequal probabilities and probabilities proportional to size\, area probability sampling\, ratio means\, sampling errors\, frame problems\, cost factors\, and practical designs and procedures. Emphasis is on practical considerations rather than on theoretical derivations\, although understanding of principles requires review of statistical results for sample surveys. The course includes an exercise that integrates the different techniques into a comprehensive sample design.\n\nWhy take this course? \n- To understand the basic ideas\, concepts and principles of probability sampling from an applied perspective\n- To be able to identify and appropriately apply sampling techniques to survey design problems\n- To be able to compute the sample size for a variety of sample designs\n- To understand and be able to assess the impact of the sample design on survey estimates\n- To learn how to design and select a probability sample involving complex sampling techniques in a survey project\, and receive expert feedback on a sampling report\n\nCourse Hours: 3\n\nInstructors: Raphael Nishimura\, Sunghee Lee\n\nPrerequisite: Two graduate-level courses in statistical methods.\n\nAll 2022 courses will be offered in an alternative remote format.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Qualitative Methods: Overview and Semi-Structured Interviewing - Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Qualitative Methods: Overview and Semi-Structured Interviewing\n\nOpen for registration!\n\nJune 20-30\, 2022\n1:00pm-3:00pm EST\nM-F\n\nThis course will focus on semi-structured\, or in-depth\, interviewing\, with a brief introduction to other qualitative methods\, including observation. Semi-structured interviewing is often most helpful in understanding complex social processes. We will examine the goals\, assumptions\, process\, and uses of interviewing and compare these methods to other related qualitative and quantitative methods in order to develop research designs appropriate to research goals. The course will cover all aspects of interviewing\, including how to decide who to interview\, how to ask good interview questions\, and how to conduct successful interviews. Students will conduct interviews\, and discuss the process and outcome of those interviews. We will examine the strengths and weaknesses of this methodology\, particularly through discussion of some of the critiques of these methods.\n\nCourse Hour: 1.5\n\nInstructor: Nancy Riley\n\nAll 2022 courses will be offered in an alternative remote format.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Research: Developmental byproducts and collaborative activity: from informal language learning to engineering education research
DESCRIPTION:Join us for AIM Research\, where we host speakers working with data analytics and research to share their knowledge and engage with the University of Michigan research and learning analytics community. The field of learning analytics is a multi- and interdisciplinary field that brings together researchers from education\, the learning sciences\, computational sciences and statistics\, and all discipline-specific forms of educational inquiry. Event details are listed below and registration is required. This event will be hosted in-person in the Wolverine Room at the Michigan Union. Andrew’s talk will be followed by a social/networking reception with light refreshments. \n\nIn this talk\, Andrew Moffat explores the idea of learning outcomes that happen when you least expect it\, ‘byproducts’ of activities that are not themselves motivated by a desire to learn. Beginning with the notion of incidental second language learning\, Andrew previews his forthcoming book by presenting data from a global survey of L2 English users. These data attest to a wide range of L2 English use online\, for both leisure and work purposes. The data also show that language activities that are inherently evaluative in nature are most likely to make L2 users uncomfortable\, as well as revealing many of the specific difficulties that L2 English users have in online discourse. He goes on to outline a Vygotskian theoretical framework that underpins the incidental learning process. Building on this framework\, Andrew proposes an approach to language teaching that seeks to harness learners’ online L2 activities to augment their classroom learning. Making connections with his current research as part of the CAI/EER collaboration Tandem project\, Andrew explores how a similar framework may be used to conceptualize developmental ‘byproducts’ from task-oriented teamwork\, as well as helping to foster equitable team interactions.\n\nThis seminar will:\n\n- Demonstrate the importance and usefulness of adopting an ecological approach to language learning.\n- Outline a framework for understanding collaborative human activity in its social and cultural contexts.\n- Suggest ways in which developmental byproducts might be augmented and exploited.\n\nAndrew Moffat is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at UM\, working with Engineering Education Research and the Center for Academic Innovation on the teamwork support platform Tandem. He has a background in language teaching\, having taught English as a foreign language in the Czech Republic\, South Korea\, Spain and the UK\, and holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Nottingham\, UK. Working subsequently at the Leeds Institute for Teaching Excellence expanded his portfolio in education research\, and he now finds Tandem bringing together many of these prior professional experiences.\n\nThe Center for Academic Innovation (CAI) is committed to ensuring that our meetings and events are accessible to all individuals. Please let us know how we can ensure that this event is inclusive to you. What accommodations or access needs can we help facilitate? Contact Trevor Parnell\, Events and Marketing Specialist (tparn@umich.edu) with any questions or access needs.\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the Center for Academic Innovation\, English Language Institute\, Language Resource Center\, and Engineering Education Research.
