SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Colloquium: Local Shimura varieties
DESCRIPTION:In the classification of unitary representations of the Lie group SL_2(R)\, the \"discrete series\" representations can be modeled on a space of L^2 functions on the upper half plane\, and there's essentially one for each integer. What if R is replaced with the field Q_p of p-adic numbers? The group SL_2(Q_p) still has a discrete series\, but it is much richer than that of SL_2(R). To study it\, one can consider a p-adic version of the upper half plane. But strangely\, the p-adic upper half plane isn't simply connected\, and to unlock the full discrete series\, one needs to study some of its finite covering spaces (the Lubin-Tate tower).\n\nAnd for p-adic groups other than SL_2(Q_p)? This talk will be an invitation to the chain of beautiful ideas leading from the Lubin-Tate tower to a much more general notion of \"local Shimura varieties\" which are implicated in the Langlands program for p-adic fields.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:STS Distinguished Lecture. Vulnerometry: Historical Reflections on the Quest to Measure Climate Vulnerability
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will track a series of discoveries of previously unknown atmospheric forces\, made in Vienna between the 1770s and 1850s: animal magnetism\, Aereon\, and Od. I propose that these belonged to a larger category of atmospheric influences on living things whose workings were obscure yet tantalizing\, including ozone\, moonlight\, and “atmospheric electricity” (the last a new designation to distinguish it from that generated by electrical machines). \n\nThe controversies that surrounded the discoveries of these forces need to be recognized as episodes in an overlooked history: the history of investigating the interrelations of life and the atmosphere. I show how this strain of research reflected the Habsburgs’ imperial and industrial ambitions. It is a story with telling parallels in present-day attempts to study the determinants of environmental health and to measure what experts refer to as “degrees of vulnerability” to climate change.\n\nCo-sponsored by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:A look at Iterative Methods via Cubic NLS
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we will explore the Wave Kinetic Equation for the Cubic Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation (NLS). We will begin with a brief overview of the history of Wave Turbulence Theory and then discuss how the problem (for the NLS and other PDEs) can be reformulated into a counting problem on Trees/Molecules. We will also directly compute the first few iterates for the NLS to see how the Wave Kinetic Equation arises.
