SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:WCED Lecture. Let Freedom Ring? Ethnic Diversity and the Politics of Values in Today’s Europe
DESCRIPTION:European debates banning racist speech\, forbidding burqas in public\, and barring refugees from entering European countries all have at their core different notions of freedom. Freedom is a fundamental value to philosophers and citizens\, but political actors often deploy the term strategically to pursue a particular agenda. In this talk\, Erik Bleich examines European debates about freedom of expression\, freedom of religion\, and freedom of movement. A focus on these issues also helps to identify the multiple values that citizens and societies grapple with when discussing divisive political issues that have roiled European countries for decades.\n\nErik Bleich is professor of political science at Middlebury College in Vermont. He has published widely on racial\, ethnic\, and religious politics in academic journals and in popular outlets. He is the author of The Freedom to Be Racist? How the United States and Europe Struggle to Preserve Freedom and Combat Racism (Cambridge University Press\, 2011) and Race Politics in Britain and France: Ideas and Policymaking since the 1960s (Oxford University Press\, 2003). Bleich edited Muslims and the State in the Post-9/11 West (Routledge\, 2010) and co-edited special issues of the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies on “Migrants\, Minorities\, and the Media” (41:6\, 2015)\, and of the French public affairs journal Esprit on “Punir la Haine? (Punishing Hate?)” (October 2015).

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Michigan Marketing Minds Presents Upcycling Failure: Women\, Resilience\, and Building a Brand of Self Worth
DESCRIPTION:Michigan Marketing Minds\, a volunteer community organization for those in (and interested in) the marketing industry\, presents \"Upcycling Failure: Women\, Resilience\, and Building a Brand of Self Worth.\"\n\nA 2010 Accenture study concluded that \"resilience may be the new criterion for professional advancement.\" Resilience is a quality that greatly builds confidence both at work and in your personal life\, but it's something that may be taught and reinforced in boys much more than girls. \n\nThe good news is that being resilient is something we can practice and grow. This session aims to open a conversation about the different ways women can \"upcycle failure\" to use even the hardest experiences to their advantage\, build a personal brand of self-worth\, and become beacons of support for others.\n\nAngela Kujava\, Director of Marketing and Innovation at Logic Solutions\, will present. We will also host a panel discussion and Q&A session to share stories and advice with the group.\n\nCome join the discussion. All are welcome!\n\nNetworking starts at 5:00 p.m.\, with program beginning at 5:30 p.m. and ending at 7:00 p.m. Snacks will be provided.\n\nDon't forget to check out our website and like our Facebook page! Hope to see you on the 29th!\n\n\nPlease register: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/upcycle-failure-women-resilience-building-a-brand-of-self-worth-tickets-23279318067

DESCRIPTION:FREE EVENT. RESERVATION LINK: https://goo.gl/bMsbvX \n\nA crossover band that blends traditional music and rock\, Hanggai is giving a 90-minute concert at the Power Center in Ann Arbor. Hanggai\, formed in 2004\, has emerged on the international stage as one of the most exciting touring bands from China. They have performed at The Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center among other prestigious venues. Hanggai’s live show is known for their ability to demonstrate rock qualities and to cross over from a traditional sound to a new sound which is a more complex blend of Mongolian musical sound with modern rock overtones. They perform Mongolian folk music with traditional and western instruments combined with raspy deep throat singing and a loosely rock based structure\, creating modern Mongolian folk rock music.
