SUMMARY:Well-being:VIRTUAL | CEW+INSPIRE MIDWEEK MINDFULNESS GUIDED SITS
DESCRIPTION:RSVP here: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJAqceGoqDosHN15uxUlzCWWN6qwjNjSQpj_ \n\nJoin us in community to practice mindfulness meditation\, a life-enhancing skill that can be learned with consistent practice. This formal\, largely-guided\, practice utilizes evidence-based cognitive training that bolsters one's ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat.  This weekly mindfulness practice encourages present moment\, non-judgemental\, awareness – noticing where your focus and attention are and continually inviting attention to current mind and body sensations in a kind and compassionate way.\n\nMindfulness meditation opens the possibility to pause\, gain perspective\, attend to the present\, and respond accordingly. In our ever-changing\, complex\, and challenging world\, mindfulness can provide grounding. As one form of contemplative practice\, mindfulness meditation can offer a framework to support a more skillful approach to navigating the demands of being human and support practitioners to build resilience and take compassionate action.\n\nWhether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner\, each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. All are welcome to attend weekly or drop-in as their schedule allows.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | 3d gravity and Teichmuller TQFT
DESCRIPTION:I will describe a proposal that relates AdS_3 quantum gravity to a topological quantum field theory known as ``Teichmuller TQFT.’’ This proposal makes precise the idea that pure AdS_3 quantum gravity is related to two copies of SL(2\,R) Chern-Simons theory and resolves some well-known issues with this lore. I will argue that moreover this proposal provides a systematic and practical tool for the computation of partition functions of 3d gravity\, and will describe how it elucidates the recent ensemble interpretation of semiclassical 3d gravity. (Based on work in progress with Lorenz Eberhardt and Mengyang Zhang.)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | The Heavyweight W boson - an Upset to the Standard Model of Particle Physics
DESCRIPTION:The Standard Model of particle physics has been a crowning achievement of fundamental physics\, culminating in the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012. As a quantum theory of the building blocks of matter and forces\, it has been one of the most successful theories in science. The recent measurement of the mass of the W boson disagrees with the theory prediction. This upset to the Standard Model may point towards exciting new discoveries in particle physics in the coming years. We will discuss the Standard Model\, the crucial role of the W boson\, and how it has become the harbinger of new laws of nature.
