SUMMARY:Exhibition:Lane Hall Gallery Summer Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, artists Ashley Bigham (photographs) and Grace Mahoney (watercolors) investigate the visibility and social role of Ukraine’s older generation of women embodied in a figure both iconic and ubiquitous: the babusya. Seen in public transport\, in the market\, and on the street\, each babusya has a story to tell. Each has something to say\, something to gossip about\, and something to complain about. \n\n\"Invisible Women: Portraits of Aging in Ukraine\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies. The exhibit is on display for public viewing weekdays from 8:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. through August 18\, 2022\, in the main lobby of Lane Hall\, located at 204 South State Street\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109. For more information on the current exhibit\, visit IRWG’s website.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography
DESCRIPTION:More than strict representations of the world we inhabit\, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. Map ≠ Territory deconstructs maps that have been used to subjugate\, appropriate\, and oppress\, as well as the maps that counter that power through emancipation and advocacy. The exhibit critically engages with materials that span from the colonial era to modern-day Detroit.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours. SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Basic Concepts in Responsive Survey Design - Responsive Survey Design: A Research Education Program - Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Basic Concepts in Responsive Survey Design\n\nWebinar open for registration!\n\nJune 27\, 2022\n9:00am-1:00pm\nM\n\nThis course will provide participants with an overview of the primary concepts underlying RSD. This will include discussion of the uncertainty in survey design\, the role of paradata\, or data describing the data collection process\, in informing decisions\, and potential RSD interventions. These interventions include timing and sequence of modes\, techniques for efficiently deploying incentives\, and combining two-phase sampling with other design changes. Interventions appropriate for face-to-face\, telephone\, web\, mail and mixed-mode surveys will be discussed. Using the Total Survey Error (TSE) framework\, the main concepts behind these designs will be explained with a focus on how these principles are designed to simultaneously control survey errors and survey costs. Examples of RSD in both large and small studies will be provided as motivation. Small group exercises will help participants to think through some of the common questions that need to be answered when employing RSD.\n\nNot for academic credit. \n\nInstructors: Andy Peytchev & James Wagner\n\nAll 2022 courses will be held in an alternative remote format.
