SUMMARY:Other:Down the River with Elzada Clover
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the groundbreaking achievements of Elzada Clover. Dr. Elzada Clover contained multitudes\; she was a brazen botanist\, the first female University of Michigan botany professor\, the first female Matthaei Botanical Gardens curator\, the first scientist to document the flora of the remote Grand Canyon\, and along with her graduate assistant Lois Jotter\, they were first non-native woman to raft the entire length of the Colorado. This exhibit at Matthaei Botanical Gardens explores her remarkable journey and enduring contributions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Framing & Facilitating High Stakes Discussions: Post-Election Edition
DESCRIPTION:Do you plan to engage your students in classroom discussions about the 2024 election or current political issues? How can you design and facilitate conversations in the classroom that might involved difficult classroom dynamics\, controversy\, or big emotions? In this session for instructors\, participants will learn about a framework for designing high stakes discussions and will begin to create or refine a plan for their own course. Through individual work and peer feedback\, you'll identify discussion goals\, tone-setting strategies\, participation guidelines and activities that can help you facilitate these discussions well. Participants are encouraged to bring ideas for a specific lesson or topic that they want to create a plan for. \n\nThis session is offered as a part of the Promoting Democracy Teaching Series by CRLT & Ginsberg Center.\n\nOpen to UM faculty\, graduate students/GSIs\, and post-docs. If you are UM staff with instructional responsibilities who would like to register\, please reach out to teachdemocracy@umich.edu\n\nRegister Here: https://events.blackthorn.io/en/Hn1RKit7/g/2kTsKXAV0p/framing-and-facilitating-high-stakes-discussions-post-election-edition-5a1oHn4l1fl/overview
