SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Responding to Offensive Jokes and Microaggressions
DESCRIPTION:Microaggressions are statements\, actions\, or incidents that involve indirect\, subtle\, intentional or unintentional discrimination against members of a minoritized group (racial\, ethnic or religious minorities\, LGBTQ folks\, older people\, people with disabilities\, etc.). Many studies have found that microaggressions have a significant negative impact on people’s mental and physical health over time and result in a sense of not belonging on campus (this is one of the chief reasons students fail to complete their academic journeys). In this introductory workshop\, you’ll get a chance to learn several strategies for responding to microaggressions (including offensive jokes). This workshop will be facilitated by nationally-recognized dialogue facilitator\, Libby Roderick\, Director of Difficult Dialogues from the University of Alaska\, and member of DDNRC.\n\n- Audience: U-M only (students\, faculty and staff)\n- Level: Introductory\n- Facilitator(s): Libby Roderick\n\nABOUT DIFFICULT DIALOGUES\nDifficult Dialogues Meet the Moment Initiative is made possible though partnership between LSA Undergraduate Education\; Division of Student Life\; U-M Year of Democracy\, Civic Empowerment\, and Global Engagement\; Stephen M. Ross School of Business\; Raoul Wallenberg Institute\; The Program on Intergroup Relations\; and Difficult Dialogues National Resource Center.
