SUMMARY:Social / Informal Gathering:Science Café: A Prehistoric Paring: The love lives of Neanderthals and Homo sapiens
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, March 19\, 2025\n5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.\nConor O’Neill’s Traditional Irish Pub\, 318 S. Main St.\, Ann Arbor\n\nValentine's day has come and gone and pretty soon we will be celebrating the vernal equinox. Spring is springing and love is in the air. But what did that look like for Neanderthals and Homo sapiens? What did interbreeding between our early ancestors look like?\n\nJoin data scientist\, curator and spermatologist Dr. Molly Hirst and geneticist Dr. Susanna Gutierrez from the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\, to explore the history behind this prehistoric pairing. Learn how studying contemporary hybridization in our distant primate relatives can shed light on prehistoric human evolution.\n\nHors d’oeuvres will be served at 5:30 p.m.\, and the program begins at 6:00 p.m.\nSeating is limited—come early.\n\nFree and open to the public. This Science Café is recommended for mature audiences.\n\nUMMNH would like to thank Conor O’Neill’s for 15+ years of support for our Science Cafés\, as well as the University of Michigan Chapter of Sigma Xi\, the Scientific Research Honor Society\, for sponsoring this event.
