SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CGIS: GCC in Beijing\, China - 2nd Year Chinese Info Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Global Course Connections (GCCs) offer a unique opportunity to take what students learn on campus at U-M during the winter semester and apply it abroad in a fun and exciting hands-on class taught by a U-M professor during a 3-week\, off-campus field experience that takes place during the following summer.Join CGIS Advisor Ben Peipert and Professor Qian Liu to learn more about the GCC in Beijing\, China - 2nd Year Chinese program\, the application process\, and the courses.Friday\, October 16 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (Online Info Session)Friday\, November 6 from 3:00 to 4:00 PM (Online Info Session)Tuesday\, November 17 from 3:30 to 4:30 PM (Online Drop-In Advising)Thursday\, December 3 from 1:00 to 2:00 PM (Online Drop-In Advising)The GCC China program is led and taught by Professor of Chinese Language\, Qian Liu.GCC Application Deadline: December 10\, 2026

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | On the origin of Flavor and CP Violation
DESCRIPTION:I will present recent work on several aspects of flavor physics\, motivated by suggestive patterns in high-precision data. First\, I will discuss CKM unitarity constraints\, focusing on the angles of the unitarity triangle and on intriguing hints of spontaneous CP violation. Then\, I will argue that Standard Model running of the Yukawa couplings points to quark–lepton unification at a surprisingly low scale. Simple Pati–Salam theories of flavor can realize this for all three generations\, with predictions within reach of upcoming searches for charged-lepton flavor violation.
