SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Lunch and Learn: Advocating for Your Digital Research Project - Hybrid
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is a part of a series of professional development opportunities presented by the Phillip J. Bowman Center for Scholarship to Practice for members of the Bowman Center Scholars currently working at the University of Michigan. \nThis Lunch and Learn event will provide valuable information on how to advocate for your project. \nYou’ve got a great plan for your research project. Now\, how do you describe the value of your project in your CV or when you are up for review?  And how will people know about it and find it once it exists? This workshop will discuss how to communicate the successes and impact of your digital project to make it legible to fellow researchers and university administration. This session will provide guidance on how to best communicate and highlight to external and internal stakeholders the deliverables and anticipated outcomes of your project.\n\nFacilitator: Keenan Colquitt\, Ph.D.\, Program Manager for Scholar EngagementPresenter:  Rebecca Welzenbach\, Research Impact and Information Science Librarian\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:PDF Accessibility & Manual Remediation in Adobe Acrobat (Part 1)
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the PDF format and essential techniques for creating accessible PDFs in this two-part workshop series. Registration for both parts (in order) is required to gain a holistic understanding of PDF accessibility and remediation. \n\nPart 1 will cover the pros and cons of the PDF format and more accessible\, alternative formats to consider. For files that must be PDFs\, you will learn about some of the hidden information that gives PDF content a meaningful structure (machine-readable text and tags)\, plus an introduction to techniques in Acrobat and tools that can assist with adding and repairing structure where needed. You will also learn about features to apply in source documents and how to properly export content from Microsoft Word to PDF to retain accessibility features. Finally\, we'll take an initial look at the Acrobat accessibility checker and talk about its limitations. \n\nPart 2 will cover intermediate and advanced techniques for tagging PDF elements\, defining accurate reading order\, adding document metadata\, and reviewing accessibility with both built-in and third-party accessibility checker tools.\n\nRegister for PDF Accessibility & Manual Remediation in Adobe Acrobat (Part 2) at https://events.umich.edu/event/145678.\n\nPlease note: Attendees should already have some familiarity with core concepts of digital accessibility prior to attending this series (e.g.\, color contrast\, font selection\, and proper use of document formatting tools like headings\, lists\, etc.). We will not have time to cover these topics in depth.\n\nAmerican Sign Language (ASL) interpreting services and Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) captioning services will be provided. If you need additional accommodations to participate in this webinar\, please email the ADA Coordinator at ADAcoordinator@umich.edu.
