SUMMARY:Other:Study Abroad Info Session: GCC Brazil - Global Blackness
DESCRIPTION:Global Course Connections (GCCs) offer a unique opportunity to take what students learn on campus at U-M during the winter semester and apply it abroad in a fun and exciting hands-on class taught by a U-M professor during a 3-week\, off-campus field experience that takes place during the following summer.\n\nJoin CGIS Advisor Juliana Mesa to learn more about the GCC Brazil - Global Blackness program\, the application process\, and the courses.\n\nThursday\, October 8\, 3:30 - 4:30 pm (Info Session) \nFriday\, October 23\, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm (Info Session) \nWednesday\, November 4\, 3:30 - 4:30 pm (Info Session) \nFriday\, December 4\, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm (Drop-in Group Advising)\nTuesday\, December 8\, 1:30 - 2:30 pm (Drop-in Group Advising)\n\nThe GCC Brazil program is led and taught by Professor of Afroamerican and African Studies\, Comparative Literature\, and Francophone Studies\, Frieda Ekotto. Application Deadline: December 10\, 2026

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - Solving conservation puzzles with integrated community models
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Summary - This talk highlights the emerging ‘integrated community modeling’ framework that combines data integration and community modeling to generate inferences on both individual species and whole communities. Evaluating the dynamics of whole communities\, not just common or charismatic species\, is critical to understanding the responses of biodiversity to ongoing environmental pressures. A recent surge in both public science and government-funded data collection efforts has led to a wealth of biodiversity data. However\, these data collection programs use a wide range of sampling protocols and record information at a variety of spatiotemporal scales. As a result\, available biodiversity data vary substantially in quantity and information content\, which must be carefully reconciled for meaningful ecological analysis. Through a series of worked examples\, I will discuss how integrated community models can be used evaluate species distributions and community-level richness patterns\, discern population and community trends over time\, and estimate demographic rates and population growth for communities of sympatric species.
