SUMMARY:Exhibition:Lila Kadaj Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Lila Kadaj received her MFA from Wayne State University. Her work has been shown at numerous institutions\, including the Detroit Institute of Arts\, the Cranbrook Art Museum\, and the Arab American National Museum. She spent nearly 27 years teaching art at Detroit Public schools.\n\nArtist statement: “When looking at a beautiful flower. It’s just itself. Just there......no .....it does not proclaim its purpose for blooming is to make people happy. It just is. Like standing in front of an easel and painting........just is.......no matter......what proclamations may be concluded to sway the viewer. Same thing goes for fine art. It’s not about I am a woman....it’s not about I am a first generation Arab American.....it’s not about being a child of trauma....it’s not about a member of my family being gunned down on the street....it’s about being born a painter.....standing in front of my easel and working to create a \"Piece of Fine Art\". Not standing on some soap box and expecting my words to somehow qualify my painting. It’s the painting\, drawing or sculpture that must speak on its own.......on how the artist......via the intellect and muse uses the elements to create something distinct and first rate. It can be quiet or loud. I see so much very weak work uplifted not for its quality but because it’s in fashion.”

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Place as Method\, Theory\, and Responsibility: Rethinking Scientific Inquiry for Complex Social Issues
DESCRIPTION:October 8-9\, 2026 | Institute for Social Research\nRegister to attend at https://myumi.ch/X8V6A \n\nThe challenge: New data and approaches to study complexity in the social world has often been without a concurrent focus on the foundations of scientific inquiry\, including complex thinking\, broad causal thinking\, attention to epistemic lens\, and integrating multiple disciplinary approaches. Further\, the academic research model\, with its resource-segregated networks\, discipline-specific training\, and short-term productivity metrics\, contributes to a fragmented and potentially misleading understanding of the social world. In the second annual ISR Symposium on Complexity in the Social World\, we will use ‘place’ as the case study to facilitate discussions on rigorous social science in the public interest. \n\nUsing research on place as the case study\, discussion topics will include:\n- Complex thinking about the social world\n- The contribution of the humanities the study of the social world\n- Epistemic lens and research transparency\n- Theories\, frameworks\, and the limits of traditional causal inference\n- The draw and danger of cool new data \n- Addressing the challenges of the academic model of science\n\nPresentations on the science of place will include:\n- The relational nature of place in population social inequalities\n- The role of history in shaping place\n- The racialization of place\; the spatialization of race\n- Place as a neutral and rational driver of social inequalities\n- Approaches to testing (causal) ideas around place\n\nThe Institute for Social Research will provide 35 travel awards for early career scholars who are building a career around the interdisciplinary science of place. These awards are intended to reduce financial barriers for those who are not currently affiliated with the University of Michigan. The awards are designed to broaden participation\, support scholarly development\, and expand the network of scholars engaged with the symposium themes. Travel awards will cover coach class airfare\, symposium hotel\, and ground airport transportation. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis\, from July 1\, 2026 until September 4\, 2026. Details and application at https://myumi.ch/DWGnj\n\nRegistration will be available on this site soon.
