SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“Making a Migratory Monarch”
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2026 Summer Lecture Series at the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS)\, Dr. André Green will give a free\, public talk titled\, “Making a Migratory Monarch.”\n\nGreen is an assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Michigan who studies the unique features of monarch butterfly migration.\n\nHe also teaches a course at UMBS titled “Eco-Evo-Devo: How Genome and Environment Affect Organismal Development\,” that has undergraduate students use cutting-edge molecular genetics techniques (including CRISPR) to illustrate fundamental concepts in eco-evo-devo while leveraging the remarkable biodiversity at UMBS.\n\nMonarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) are renowned for their annual transcontinental migration where they fly thousands of miles each fall to overwinter at specific sites in central Mexico.\n\nHow did this phenotype evolve?\n\nThe mechanisms (behavioral\, genetic\, and molecular) required for migrants to perform this trip\, particularly to naïvely identify their overwintering sites with remarkably high fidelity\, are unknown.\n\nIn his talk at UMBS\, Green will discuss his lab’s efforts that aim to extend our understanding of how this occurs.\n\nHis team integrates development\, genomics\, behavior\, and physiology in both laboratory and natural settings.\n\nGreen earned a Ph.D. in biology from Harvard University and a bachelor of science degree in biology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.\n\nThe University of Michigan Biological Station serves as a gathering place to learn from the natural world\, advance research and education\, and inspire action. We leverage over a century of research and transformative experiences to drive discoveries and solutions to benefit Michigan and beyond.\n\nFounded in 1909\, UMBS supports long-term research and education through immersive\, field-based courses and features state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for data collection and analysis to help any field researcher be productive. It is where students and scientists from across the globe live and work as a community to learn from the place.\n\nThe Summer Lecture Series is a tradition at UMBS\, where we explore scientific topics with distinguished guest speakers from across the country so the community can learn about our natural world.\n\nThe free\, public talks are on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in the spring and summer in Gates Lecture Hall at the University of Michigan Biological Station\, located at 9133 Biological Rd. in Pellston\, Michigan — about 20 miles south of the Mackinac Bridge.

SUMMARY:Performance:Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears
DESCRIPTION:Modern blues and funk infused rock and roll\n\nBlack Joe Lewis is the realest motherfucker there is. When Covid sidelined his touring this past year\, he started laying concrete to help support his baby mama and his kid. That’s fuckin’ real. When Joe and his band\, the Honeybears\, popped onto the national stage over a decade ago\, many critics embraced him but still\, there were some that maintained that they hadn’t paid their dues. Joe’s still here. Still going. Still cashing checks and snapping necks. The dues of hard work\; the delirious heights of the industry as well as the disappointments and low hanging fruit. Through this all\, Joe’s only honed his mastery over gut bucket blues guitar and his true voice. It’s a vital and distinctly American voice that never anticipated the attention he wound up receiving\, never went looking for it either. It just started happening. The garage\, the blues\, the propulsive and synergistic live performances that inhabit the spaces of James Brown\, Lightnin’ Hopkins\, and the MC5...those things happened naturally from the very beginning and could only be accurately communicated in the live experience\, not a press release or a slick brand campaign. Sharon Jones\, Charles Bradley\, Cedric Burnside and Lightnin Malcolm\, The Dirtbombs\, Detroit Cobras\, the Strange Boys\; these are some of the artists that Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears shared countless bills with\; almost a roll call of the most influential soul and garage bands of the last twenty five years. Has the soul blues garage explosion from that era been commodified or worked into the overall template of pop rock? Sure. But the ground floor was a vital space for people that like guitars and grease and at this point Black Joe Lewis is one of the last standing that was there. Last of a dying breed. Or maybe a missing link. Does this make him a throwback? A throwback to a throwback? It’d be tempting and easy for Joe to go along with that but nah\, we don’t think so. We know that Joe Lewis is genuinely doing his thing and that he’d do it regardless of what’s coming down the pipe. A stone cold original and a veteran at that. If you like whistling in your music and some floppy hat\, quaky kneed dudes cloyingly singing at you\, then you might not “get it” but whatever...there are enough intrepid\, degenerate weirdos that do. Those are the folks Joe cares about. Not the glad handing set. Not the fair-weather friend set getting down with the flavor of the month. Like the title of his last album says\, “the difference between me and you” is Joe defining for himself that there’s the belabored wannabes and then there’s dudes that actually “HAVE the blues”...whatever the hell THAT is! Joe’s concrete pouring boss is gonna miss him.\n\nYpsilanti's own James Bourland & Co open the show with a performance of raw emotion and soul. Led by the charismatic frontman James Bourland\, whose gritty vocals and masterful guitar riffs set the stage on fire. Accompanied by an allstar band of local talent\, Marley Turner on Harmonica\, Dylan Turner on Keys\, Skott Schoonover on Bass\, and Jordan Otto on Drums\, this blues ensemble captures the essence of the genre's rich history while adding their own modern twist.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Muted Volumes: Book-Objects\, Patterned Papers\, and the Closed Stacks of Buhr
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit in the Clark Library rotunda focuses on handmade decorative patterned papers when exploring books stored at the library's Buhr Offsite Shelving Facility. Decorative paper\, noticed when walking through the stack's aisles or surprising you when you casually flip through a book\, can really catch your eye. But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing\, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.\n\nAs a response to these reflections\, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr — the books that don’t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday\, May 14th\, 5pm - 6:30pm\, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.
