DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The dimer model\, i.e. random perfect matchings of a bipartite graph\, is a classical object about which much is known. As soon as one biases the probability measure by edge weights which are themselves random\, very little is known rigorously\, though physicists have studied such models for several decades and made extensive predictions. I will discuss a new integrable model in this class (the Gamma-disordered Aztec diamond) which allows us to prove results on the free energy\, and also exhibits surprising relations to integrable polymer models which lead to probabilistic results on tilings. DESCRIPTION:This talk concerns the geometric classification of smooth\, locally free\, codimension-one actions of higher-rank simple Lie groups G (e.g.\, SL(n\,R)\, n at least 3) on closed manifolds M. We show that M is G-equivariantly diffeomorphic (up to a finite cover) to  G/\Gamma x S^1\, for a uniform lattice \Gamma of G\, if and only if it admits a probability measure that is mixing for a minimal parabolic subgroup P of G. When such a P-mixing probability measure does not exist\, we show that M is a fiber bundle over a boundary space of G\, i.e.\, over G/Q for some parabolic subgroup Q of G. This result is in the spirit of the Zimmer program.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student AIM Seminar: A Mathematical Introduction to Auxiliary-field Quantum Monte Carlo
DESCRIPTION:Auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo with the phaseless constraint (ph-AFQMC) is one of the leading candidates for ground state energy calculations for materials and molecules of moderate scale. This method corresponds with efficiently simulating an imaginary time evolution on a manifold of single Slater determinants. In this chalk talk\, I will build up the theory of ph-AFQMC assuming no background in quantum mechanics or Monte Carlo methods. I will explain how it works\, why it is efficient\, and demonstrate why the phaseless constraint is necessary. If time permits\, I will also briefly show how to download and use the SAFIRE library (safire.flatironinstitute.org) for doing AFQMC calculations on your own.

Mirza.  \n\n\nDr. Mirza will be discussing his latest book *The Islamic Mary: Maryam Through the Centuries *(Fortress Press\, 2025)\, which examines the appearances of Mary\, mother of Jesus (Isa) in various Islamic theological and cultural contexts. Mary has been historically revered throughout the Islamic and Christian traditions. DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances.The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session.If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging\, please reach out to the GROWE team. SAPAC GROWE provides exemptions to the ERC workshop (where requirements are set in place) on a case by case basis. In his talk \"Me\, Myself and AI\" Keret notably explores the intersection of human creativity and algorithms. \n\nKERET BIO \nBorn in Ramat Gan in 1967\, Etgar Keret is a leading voice in Israeli literature and film. His books have been published in over four dozen languages and his writing has appeared in The New York Times\, Le Monde\, The New Yorker\, The Guardian\, The Paris Review and Zoetrope\, among others. Over a hundred short films and several feature films have been based on his stories. He has received the Book Publishers Association of Israel's Platinum Prize several times\, and the Newman Prize for Literature (2012). In 2010\, Keret was honored in France with the decoration of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In 2007\, Keret and Shira Geffen won the Cannes Film Festival's \"Caméra d'Or\" award for their movie Jellyfish\, and Best Director Award from the French Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers. The two also co-wrote and directed \"The Middleman\" (2019)\, a French mini-series for ARTE\, which won the best screenplay award at Festival de la Fiction in La Rochelle. Keret was awarded the 2016 Charles Bronfman Prize. His latest collection\, Fly Already\, won Israel’s most prestigious literary award\, the Sapir Prize (2018) and a National Jewish Book Award (2019). Since 2021\, he has been publishing the weekly newsletter \"Alphabet Soup\" on Substack. In 2022\, Keret presented an exhibition about his mother at the Jewish Museum Berlin. His newest short-story collection is Autocorrect.
