SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:SRC Seminar: Advancing Multilevel and Integrative Approaches to Address Intimate Partner Violence
DESCRIPTION:Join Zoom Meeting\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/99130067042?pwd=arc8yjlQ9fiN4ZeVrG4jgjbkkpQTSI.1&jst=2\n\nMeeting ID: 991 3006 7042\nPasscode: 332307\n\nAbstract:\nIntimate partner violence (IPV) is a major public health and human rights issue with significant physical\, psychological\, relational\, and embodied consequences. This presentation introduces two interconnected projects that examine IPV through interdisciplinary perspectives\, including criminology\, sociology\, social work\, gender studies\, psychology\, family studies\, public health\, trauma studies\, and neuroscience.\n\nThe first project focuses on theory development through a cross-national\, multilevel examination of IPV victimization among women and men. It explores how broader structural conditions intersect with individual experiences to shape IPV risk. By integrating macro- and micro-level perspectives\, this work aims to advance a more comprehensive understanding of IPV across diverse global contexts.\n\nThe second project focuses on intervention development and survivor healing. It examines an integrative\, culturally responsive\, trauma-informed\, and mindfulness-based intervention for individuals with histories of IPV. Using a mixed-methods randomized controlled trial design\, the project assesses preliminary indicators of holistic well-being\, empowerment\, and stress regulation through surveys\, interviews\, and biomarkers.\n\nTogether\, these projects reflect an interdisciplinary research agenda that moves from understanding the multilevel determinants of IPV to developing culturally grounded\, trauma-informed\, mindfulness-based\, and neuroscience-informed approaches to survivor recovery. The presentation will discuss implications for theory development\, policy\, practice\, clinical intervention\, and global efforts to prevent IPV.\n\nBiography:\nCarrie K. W. Li\, PhD\, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration at the University of Hong Kong and an International Visiting Faculty member at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. Dr. Li is an interdisciplinary scholar whose research bridges criminology\, sociology\, social work\, psychology\, nursing\, and public health. She earned her PhD in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University\, her MSc in Crime Science from University College London\, and her BSc with Honours in Experimental Psychology from the University of Bristol. Dr. Li’s research has been supported by numerous competitive grants totaling more than USD 1.3 million. Her work has been published in leading peer-reviewed international journals\, including Journal of Interpersonal Violence\, Family Process\, Child Abuse & Neglect\, Journal of Family Violence\, Violence Against Women\, Victims & Offenders\, Deviant Behavior\, and Journal of Prevention and Health Promotion.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:OGPS GenAI Essentials - Fall 2026
DESCRIPTION:Generative AI tools are increasingly part of academic\, research\, and professional work\, but using them effectively requires more than knowing how to write a prompt. GenAI Essentials is a practical workshop series designed to help graduate students and postdoctoral scholars make informed\, responsible decisions about when and how to use generative AI.Through interactive sessions and hands-on activities\, participants will examine the capabilities and limitations of GenAI tools\, practice strategies for using AI in writing and communication\, and develop more intentional approaches to prompting and evaluating AI-generated responses.Participants may register for one or more sessions.By the end of the Fall 2026 series\, participants will be able to:Evaluate appropriate uses and limitations of generative AI in academic\, research\, and professional contexts.Identify ethical\, privacy\, academic integrity\, and disclosure considerations that should inform GenAI use.Use GenAI strategically to support revision\, feedback\, and professional communication without outsourcing authorship or judgment.Develop more specific and effective prompts by identifying the characteristics\, goals\, and conventions of the writing they want to produce or improve. If you have any questions\, please reach out Dr. Ioannis Chremos (ichremos@umich.edu)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning Seminar in Algebraic Combinatorics
DESCRIPTION:Building on the last talk\, we will continue to explore the connection between the completely packed loop models (CPL) and the six vertex model through the lens of the (affine) Temperly-Lieb algebra. We will introduce the Temperley-Lieb algebra as a quotient of the Hecke algebra and see how the Yang-Baxter equation shows up naturally in this setting. We will realize CPL and the six vertex model as representations of this algebra and use this representation to study the relationship between the two models.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Geometry Seminar: Group actions on families of K3 categories
DESCRIPTION:There is a well-known obstruction distinguishing an action of a finite group G on a derived category from a mere identification of G with a subgroup of the group of autoequivalences. I will first explain how to extend this distinction to a family of categories and\, in the case of K3 surfaces\, how to use stability conditions to completely control this construction. \n\nAs one example\, this leads to a construction of non-commutative abelian surfaces (categories deformation-equivalent to derived categories of abelian surfaces) in exactly as much generality as one could reasonably hope for. The applications include the construction of every polarised Hyperkaehler variety of Kummer type from a moduli space.\n\nThis is based on joint work with Alex Perry\, Laura Pertusi and Xiaolei Zhao.
