Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Prelim Seminar Series - A Feeling for the Organism: Understanding Trait Evolution in Polypore Mushrooms
DESCRIPTION:Talk Title:  A Feeling for the Organism: Understanding Trait Evolution in Polypore Mushrooms\n\nSummary: My project proposal broadly investigates macrofungal evolution through a specific focus on sporocarp traits. For this\, I use two different species of wood-inhabiting fungi that produce fruiting bodies having a poroid hymenophore (porous spore producing layer on the underside of the mushroom)\, commonly referred to as polypores. Polypores\, which form a polyphyletic group within Basidiomycota\, are unique in harboring species that produce annual and perennial hardy\, poroid fruiting bodies which can remain exposed to the external environment and maintain functionality for long periods of time. Unlike the fruiting bodies of a majority of macrofungal species\, given the persistence of certain polypore fruiting bodies on their wood-substrate over extended time periods\, species within Polyporaceae are suitable for investigating the evolution of life history traits and adaptation in macrofungi. My PhD project will focus on two established traits- colour polymorphism and longevity\; and will further use population genetics to identify traits that may be important for local adaptation. The first two chapters will be focussing on Trametes versicolor (aka Turkey Tail) which is a highly colour polymorphic\, globally distributed\, hardwood decay fungus found growing on a wide range of hardwood species. Using T. versicolor\, I firstly aim to uncover if colour polymorphism in the species is linked to the wood species it grows on or if it is a heritable trait\; and secondly\, aim to determine whether it has population structuring across its geographic distribution\, and local adaptation to each habitat of occurrence. In my third chapter\, I propose to use Ganoderma applanatum (aka Artist’s conk) which has a perennial fruiting body that remains functional and fertile for several years to investigate senescence and the evolution of this alternate life history strategy.

DESCRIPTION:LSA faculty member Jessi Grieser performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/W5X1W\n\nThrough the lens of a seventeenth-century Chinese dream encyclopedia among other sources\, Brigid Vance explores the way in which late Ming literati negotiated the relationship between when they dreamed and what tools they could use to understand and transform their dreams.\n   \n   Brigid E. Vance is associate professor of history at Lawrence University. Her research focuses on the intellectual and cultural history of dreams and dream divination in late Ming China. She also has teaching interests in the history of science\, Tokugawa Japan\, material culture\, and the Silk Roads. In addition to her history PhD from Princeton\, Brigid also earned a certificate in Further Education in Analytical Psychology from the CG Jung Institute in Zürich\, Switzerland. She has published on dreams and inclusive pedagogy. Her article on student podcasts won the 2022 American Historical Association William and Edwyna Gilbert award for the best article on teaching history. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Contributions to Distributed Learning and Selective Inference
DESCRIPTION:The rapid growth and distributed nature of modern datasets pose significant challenges in statistical learning and inference. Privacy concerns often prohibit direct data sharing across sites\, while distributional heterogeneity complicates accurate modeling and inference. Moreover\, high-dimensional data and model selection procedures necessitate statistical methods for valid inference post-selection. This dissertation addresses these challenges by developing methodologies in distributed statistical learning\, inference with heterogeneous data\, and selective inference.\n\nIn the first part of the dissertation\, we propose a novel one-shot distributed learning algorithm via refitting bootstrap samples. We demonstrate that the proposed estimator achieves full-sample statistical rates with only one round of communication of subsample-based statistics in generalized linear models and noisy phase retrieval. We further extend this approach to an iterative algorithm and apply it to convolutional neural networks (CNNs)\, which exhibits superior performances over existing methods in simulation studies.\n\nIn the second part of the dissertation\, we develop a novel one-shot distributed learning algorithm to address cross-site heterogeneity. The proposed method effectively accommodates heterogeneity by allowing nuisance parameters to vary across sites. We show that the proposed estimator attains the full-sample statistical error rate and efficiency with only a single round of communication of local estimators. Our simulation studies support these theoretical findings.\n\nIn the third part of the dissertation\, we introduce an asymptotic pivot to infer about the effects of selected variables on conditional quantile functions. Utilizing estimators from smoothed quantile regression\, our proposed pivot is easy to compute and yields asymptotically-exact selective inference without making strict distributional assumptions about the response variable. By employing external randomization\, our approach fully utilizes the data for both selection and inference\, outperforming traditional methods like data splitting by consistently delivering shorter and more reliable confidence intervals. Simulation studies and an empirical application analyzing risk factors for low birth weight validate the practical efficacy of our method.

DESCRIPTION:Research from Purdue University presents a novel approach for deploying Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) in challenging Midwest winter environments through the integration of Vision Language Models (VLMs). The system addresses the critical safety and mobility challenges posed by winter conditions through a VLM capable of interpreting complex visual scenes and natural language instructions to generate personalized control strategies. The framework incorporates a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) memory module that enables continuous adaptation to individual preferences through human feedback. Real-world experiments conducted on professional test tracks demonstrate that our approach reduces takeover rates by up to 76.9% compared to baseline systems\, particularly when processing indirect user instructions. The system successfully interprets diverse winter driving scenarios\, maintaining high safety standards while adapting control parameters to both environmental conditions and user preferences. A comprehensive benchmark dataset\, focused specifically on winter driving conditions\, provides a foundation for future CAV development in extreme weather. This work represents a significant step in autonomous vehicle technology for winter operations and builds a framework for safer\, more reliable transportation systems in extreme weather conditions in the Midwest.\n---\nAbout the speaker: Dr. Ziran Wang is a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in the Lyles School of Civil Engineering at Purdue University. Prior to joining Purdue\, Dr. Wang worked for Toyota R&D in Silicon Valley as a Principal Researcher of Digital Twin. He also serves as Founding Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Internet of Things in Intelligent Transportation Systems\, and Associate Editor of four academic journals. His achievements were demonstrated at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas\, and acknowledged by five best paper awards\, the First Prize in IEEE Shape the Future of ITS Competition\, and the U.S. Department of Transportation Dissertation Award. Dr. Wang is an author of 60+ refereed publications and 50+ patent applications\, and his research interests are digital twins\, autonomous driving\, and embodied AI. He received the Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California\, Riverside.
