SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:QMSS Resume-Building Workshop Featuring Data Skills
DESCRIPTION:Join the Quantitative Methods in the Social Science (QMSS) Program for a resume-building workshop with a special focus on highlighting & marketing your data-related skills from QMSS (and other!) courses. \n\nFirst\, students will receive a rundown of general advice on how to structure a resume\, how a resume is different from a curriculum vitae (CV)\, and some dos and don'ts and tips and tricks for using them in applications. Then\, we will dive deeper into specific advice for how to market data and analytical skills taught in QMSS courses including QMSS 201\, 301\, and 451 and how to supplement previous and current work/related experiences with data-related points. \n\nIn the second half of the workshop\, students will work in real-time on their own resumes to edit their skills and experience sections based on the workshop's content and ask questions one-on-one with the presenter about their specific resume\, experiences\, and/or goals.\n\nFollowing the workshop\, participants will have an opportunity to send their resume in and receive written feedback from the presenter and/or senior QMSS Peer Mentors as well as make one-on-one appointments with the presenter or QMSS Peer Mentors to discuss further.\n\nStudents are encouraged to bring a laptop or tablet to take notes\, work on (or create!) your current resume\, and/or ask specific questions during the workshop. You may also bring a printed version of your current resume to take notes and ask questions if you prefer.\n\nOpen to all students!

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:FYRST Workshops 2026 - 2027
DESCRIPTION:If you are only seeing one workshop\, please SIGN-IN and refresh the Sessions page! If still having issues\, click this link. \nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required\, in-person\, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment\, communication\, and boundary setting. However\, if you still have concerns about programming and would like to request alternative programming\, please feel free to reach out at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“What if I struggle to learn in a presentation setting? I’m an active learner.”\nOur workshop is built to meet a variety of learning styles\, including time for self-reflection\, small group sharing\, and resources to take with you to work through on your own time! This workshop is meant to be interactive and inclusive. \n“Can I request accommodations?”\nWe considered accessibility in creating this workshop and selecting the locations in which the workshops are help. However\, we recognize many places at the University are inaccessible and we've set an * next to workshops that are on the first floor and lack stairs. These workshops also will have a presentation (other workshops we do not) and are a good fit for those who might need a large font. Please sign up for those if you feel that accommodations would assist you and reach out to SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu if you are concerned or have questions. \n“I missed my workshop\, what should I do ?”\nOur team tracks attendance at each workshop by having participants swipe in with their MCard. If you are not able to attend the workshop you signed up for\, our team will continue to send reminder emails until you have completed a workshop. In this case\, please sign up for another workshop as soon as you can as the workshop is required and may fill up especially near the end of the semester. No need to contact SAPAC unless you are not able to reschedule. \n“I have had gender-based violence training before\, can I get this requirement waived?”\nAs this workshop was designed with University of Michigan student feedback in mind\, our workshop is unique to the UM community. Our curriculum focuses on individualized reflection and because of its interactive nature\, each workshop will be unique to the people attending. Although we are excited you already have familiarity with the subject\, this workshop is required for every first year and transfer student. \n“I’m a commuter/non-traditional student\, do I still have to attend?\"\nYes\, this workshop is required for every first-year and transfer student - not only do we want every student to benefit from having this time to connect with peers\, but we also want to make sure your peers benefit from what you bring to our community. If you have any concerns or questions about being able to participate\, please contact SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“I still have questions! Who should I contact?\"\nPlease contact us at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Performance:University Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Are our life-journeys predetermined by the unstoppable forces of fate or can we shape our own destiny? Two of the most beloved pieces in all of orchestra music seem to provide two contrasting answers. The striking overture to Verdi’s *La Forza del Destino* (The Force of Destiny)\, portrays a dark account of human struggle against circumstances and fate. Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony tells a different story during a dramatic journey that overcomes its fate motive\, culminating in a magnificent and uplifting anthem of human triumph. Hailed by the *New York Times* as “a brilliant soloist\,” U-M faculty member Fabiola Kim\, is featured in the world premiere of the Violin Concerto by Quinn Mason\, the 7th commission of the Michigan Orchestra Repertoire for Equity (MORE) initiative\, founded in 2020 by USO Music Director Kenneth Kiesler. \n\nKenneth Kiesler\, conductor\nFabiola Kim\, violin (Mason)\n\nPROGRAM\n\nOverture to *La forza del destino* \nGiuseppe Verdi\n\nViolin Concerto (world premiere) \nQuinn Mason \n\nSymphony No. 5 \nPyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky\n\nConcert Duration: 1 hour and 40 minutes	\n\n–––\n*Parking / Traffic alert for attendees:*\nhttps://smtd.umich.edu/2026-construction

SUMMARY:Exhibition:2026 Second Year Studio Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:\n\nAugust 24 - October 18\, 2026\nExhibition Reception: October 1\, 1-2:30 p.m.\n\nIn their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students \"develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.\" \n\nStamps Lecturer & Student Exhibitions Coordinator Sally Clegg notes\, \"Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now?\" At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 50 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. The pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker’s path: experiments in previously unfamiliar methods\, emergent passions\, creative risks taken\, iterations and reiterations\, and the seeds of so much future work.\n\nAs Course Coordinator\, Stamps Assistant Professor Pedram Baldari both teaches and works directly with all the faculty overseeing each section to collaboratively support the entire class. He offers this reflection on the diverse collection of work on view in this year’s exhibition.\n\nThese works engage a wide range of questions and concerns. Students investigate memory\, identity\, materiality\, ecology\, technology\, labor\, social relationships\, and the built environment through equally diverse formal approaches. While these subjects recur across the exhibition\, what stands out most is not a dominant thematic direction\, but a shared commitment to sustained inquiry.\n\nSYS is intentionally structured around a different learning model than project-based courses. Rather than responding to predetermined assignments\, students identify their own questions and spend an entire semester developing them through research\, experimentation\, critique\, and multiple iterations. The emphasis is not on arriving quickly at a resolved outcome\, but on cultivating the capacity to work independently\, remain responsive to new discoveries\, and allow the project itself to evolve through sustained engagement.\n\nAs a result\, the exhibition presents more than a collection of finished works. It documents different ways of investigating\, testing\, and refining ideas. Some students advance through material experimentation\, others through drawing\, installation\, performance\, digital media\, social engagement\, or speculative approaches. Each project reflects a distinct methodology that has developed through repeated cycles of making\, reflection\, critique\, and revision. In a sense\, the dialectical process generated by the nature of this course is the most significant thread connecting this year’s exhibition. It marks a point at which students begin moving beyond solving assignments toward constructing independent practices\, developing the habits of inquiry\, critical reflection\, and experimentation that will continue to shape their work well beyond SYS.\n\n\n\nExhibiting Artists and Designers\n<ul class=\"twocol\">\n\nNailah Aguilar\n\nAkylah Archer\n\nZachary Berenbaum\n\nSamantha Blaine\n\nLauren Boyce\n\nKas Brajkovic\n\nAnna Browne\n\nLilah Chow\n\nIsabella Cortes\n\nMagdalena Dimovski\n\nLeah Elliott\n\nAya Fadlelzebair\n\nM.
