SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CCMB/DCMB Weekly Bioinformatics Seminar Series featuring Peter Toogood\, PhD (Research Associate Professor and Director of Michigan Drug Discovery (MDD))
DESCRIPTION:High throughput screening (HTS) is a common starting point for small molecule drug discovery campaigns\, especially when the biological target is new. HTS is commonly conducted in the wet lab (e.g. the U-M Center for Chemical Genomics)\, but also can be conducted in silico. These \"virtual screens\" are either structure-based\, requiring a knowledge of the 3D structure of the biological target\, or ligand-based\, in which case having multiple overlapping ligands makes it easier to define the feature set that new ligands must match. In this talk\, I will describe several applications of artificial intelligence/machine learning to virtual screening in our projects seeking to identify new starting points for cancer drug discovery. In so doing\, I will trace the evolution of these methods over the last decade from crude attempts at generative design to the application of frontier models like Claude Science.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Exploratory Optimal Reinsurance under the Mean-Variance Criterion
DESCRIPTION:This paper proposes a Reinforcement Learning (RL) approach to the optimal reinsurance problem\nwhen the insurer faces uncertainty about the insurance claim dynamics. To this end\, we first formulate\nan exploratory version of the problem as a relaxed stochastic control problem. Within a broad class of\nparametric retention functions and general risk loading functions\, we derive the closed-form equilibrium\npolicy under the continuous-time mean-variance criterion. This is achieved through a formal verification\ntheorem and solving classical solutions of a system of exploratory extended Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman\n(EEHJB) equations. We then establish a policy iteration theorem\, showing that starting from any timeand state-homogeneous policy\, policy iteration converges to the derived equilibrium policy. Next\, we\ndevelop a martingale orthogonality theorem\, which serves as the foundation of our RL algorithm. The\nalgorithm is evaluated through simulation studies and real data from the U.S. National Flood Insurance\nProgram. Results demonstrate that the RL approach effectively learns unknown claim distributions\,\ntracks unobserved changes in claim dynamics and produces higher insurer surplus trajectories than the\nmaximum likelihood estimation (MLE) approach while simultaneously exhibiting greater robustness to\nthe choice of training window.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Probability and Analysis: Strongly log-concave measures and lattices
DESCRIPTION:Let L be a lattice in R^n. Suppose that L has the property that the determinant of every non-zero sublattice L' of L is larger than one. We prove that there exists a symmetric random vector X on R^n with a smooth\, strictly positive density f on R^n simultaneously enjoying the following two properties: a) f is strongly log-concave\; b) X + L is uniform on R^n/L.\n\nMoreover\, the existence of such a density f on R^n characterizes this determinant condition imposed on L. This construction connects several problems in lattice theory to established results in convex geometry. We discuss a range of applications. This is joint work with Victor Reis and Thomas Rothvoss.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student AIM Seminar: Instrument-Aware Diffusion for Solar Magnetogram Reconstruction
DESCRIPTION:Historical scientific archives often contain observations of lasting value that were acquired with lower-resolution instruments than those available today. Solar magnetograms provide a motivating example: the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) aboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) recorded decades of solar activity before the higher-resolution Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) became available. We develop a generative framework that first learns how modern observations are transformed by an older instrument\, uses this transformation to construct paired training data\, and then trains a conditional diffusion model to reverse the loss of resolution. A scalable multiscale U-Net and DPM++ sampler generate multiple modern-quality reconstructions from each historical observation. More broadly\, this provides a general strategy for connecting scientific archives across generations of instruments.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Qahwah & Authors: Sherine Hamdy's New Graphic Novel\, *Landing in Place*
DESCRIPTION:RSVP: https://myumi.ch/8Jx93\nDate: November 4\, 4:30 PM ET\nLocation: 555 Weiser Hall (5th Floor)\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor MI\n\nJoin the Global Islamic Studies Center (GISC) on November 4\, 2026\, at 4:30 PM in 555 Weiser Hall\, University of Michigan\, for a Qahwah & Authors book series author talk on LANDING IN PLACE\, Sherine Hamdy's coming-of-age graphic novel about Anisa\, a second-generation Egyptian-Muslim American college girl navigating identity\, culture\, religion\, and family.\n\nBalancing humor with family tragedy and moments of joy amid political trauma\, LANDING IN PLACE weaves together personal and global histories\, spanning the Suez Crisis of 1956\, the 2011 Arab Spring protests in Cairo’s Tahrir Square\, and contemporary global protests for Palestinian rights. Through Anisa’s experiences as a young\, hijab-wearing Muslim woman\, Hamdy explores how migration to and diaspora in the United States\, and neocolonialism and foreign intervention in Egypt and the Global South shape individual lives and family histories. LANDING IN PLACE begins as a story shaped by migrant and exile frustration and external assumptions about Muslim women\, and evolves into one that celebrates Muslim identity and cultures\, and the power of finding one’s voice.\n\nThis event is brought to you by the University of Michigan Global Islamic Studies Center (GISC) and the Arab and Muslim American Studies (AMAS) Program in the Department of American Culture.\n\nAbout Sherine Hamdy: Sherine Hamdy is a Professor of Anthropology at the University of California Irvine\, where she joined the faculty in 2017. She was previously a tenured faculty member at Brown University since 2006. She has published widely on the themes of Muslim medical ethics\, the political economic distribution of disease in Egypt\, and the role of physicians in the Arab spring uprisings. Her first book Our Bodies Belong to God: Organ Transplants\, Islam\, and the Struggle for Human Dignity in Egypt was published by the University of California Press in 2012. Hamdy also inaugurated the University of Toronto Press graphic novel series ethnoGRAPHIC with her co-authored graphic novel Lissa: A Story of Friendship\, Medical Promise\, and Revolution\, which combines panel-to-panel comics narration with her medical anthropology research. In 2026\, Penguin Random House published Hamdy's graphic novel Landing in Place\, illustrated by Myra El Mir. Hamdy currently serves as Series Editor for the University of Toronto Press ethnoGRAPHIC series\, and encourages academics to adopt multiple media forms in their distribution of research findings.\n\nFor more events from the Global Islamic Studies Center at the University of Michigan\, please visit ii.umich.edu/islamicstudies.\n\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:SAPAC GROWE: Engendering Respectful Communities Workshops - SY26 - 27
DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances. The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings. The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session. If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging\, please reach out to the GROWE team. SAPAC GROWE provides exemptions to the ERC workshop (where requirements are set in place) on a case by case basis. The Program Manager will communicate with students requesting exemptions via email and/or meet with students via zoom meetings to discuss their need for exemptions and provide any relevant and necessary resources.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:FYRST Workshops 2026 - 2027
DESCRIPTION:If you are only seeing one workshop\, please SIGN-IN and refresh the Sessions page! If still having issues\, click this link. \nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required\, in-person\, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment\, communication\, and boundary setting. However\, if you still have concerns about programming and would like to request alternative programming\, please feel free to reach out at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“What if I struggle to learn in a presentation setting? I’m an active learner.”\nOur workshop is built to meet a variety of learning styles\, including time for self-reflection\, small group sharing\, and resources to take with you to work through on your own time! This workshop is meant to be interactive and inclusive. \n“Can I request accommodations?”\nWe considered accessibility in creating this workshop and selecting the locations in which the workshops are help. However\, we recognize many places at the University are inaccessible and we've set an * next to workshops that are on the first floor and lack stairs. These workshops also will have a presentation (other workshops we do not) and are a good fit for those who might need a large font. Please sign up for those if you feel that accommodations would assist you and reach out to SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu if you are concerned or have questions. \n“I missed my workshop\, what should I do ?”\nOur team tracks attendance at each workshop by having participants swipe in with their MCard. If you are not able to attend the workshop you signed up for\, our team will continue to send reminder emails until you have completed a workshop. In this case\, please sign up for another workshop as soon as you can as the workshop is required and may fill up especially near the end of the semester. No need to contact SAPAC unless you are not able to reschedule. \n“I have had gender-based violence training before\, can I get this requirement waived?”\nAs this workshop was designed with University of Michigan student feedback in mind\, our workshop is unique to the UM community. Our curriculum focuses on individualized reflection and because of its interactive nature\, each workshop will be unique to the people attending. Although we are excited you already have familiarity with the subject\, this workshop is required for every first year and transfer student. \n“I’m a commuter/non-traditional student\, do I still have to attend?\"\nYes\, this workshop is required for every first-year and transfer student - not only do we want every student to benefit from having this time to connect with peers\, but we also want to make sure your peers benefit from what you bring to our community. If you have any concerns or questions about being able to participate\, please contact SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“I still have questions! Who should I contact?\"\nPlease contact us at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.
