DESCRIPTION:Turn Up Turnout (TUT)\, the campus nonpartisan civic engagement organization\, is inviting representatives from All Voting is Local\, Campus Vote Project\, student leaders\, and other election law folks to pilot a new initiative called: Maize and Blue Civics. TUT is the student group in UMICH Votes\, helping to successfully register over 10\,000 voters from August to October for the 2024 election. Their work does not stop after elections\, as they are a year-round org! \n\nThe topic of our first Maize and Blue Civics will be: The State of Voting Rights. Our goal as a nonpartisan organization that supports access to the ballot is to help inform and educate voters about the potential impact of legislation. DESCRIPTION:Postdoc Thiago Gonçalves-Souza will be coming in to talk about his work connecting community ecology with patterns of biodiversity and ecosystem function. Thiago is the head of Postdoc Development at the Institute for Global Change Biology (IGCB)\, and will also speak to the role of research institutes like the IGCB here at Umich. Thiago is doing really exciting work and recently had a paper on habitat fragmentation published in Nature (Species turnover does not rescue biodiversity in fragmented landscapes)! This is a great chance to learn about postdoctoral research\, the role of research institutes\, and also just connect with people who are doing leading research in ecology and evolutionary biology!
