SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning Seminar in Algebraic Combinatorics
DESCRIPTION:This talk will be an introduction to Nakajima quiver varieties\, focusing on type A quivers. We will begin with a brief recount of quiver representations\, including discussion of kernels and indecomposables. We will define the notion of framing\, and impose a ``stability condition\" on framed quiver representations to obtain what we will call pre-quiver varieties\, of which the Grassmannians and complete flag varieties are examples. Next\, we will introduce the doubled framed quiver. Imposing both the stability condition and additional \"moment map condition\" on doubled framed quiver representations yields the notion of a Nakajima quiver variety. Examples include cotangent bundles of Grassmannians and complete flag varieties.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Entropy-Regularized Finite-State Mean Field Control Problems
DESCRIPTION:We study an infinite-horizon discounted mean field control problem for finite-state nonlinear continuous-time Markov chains. Controls are locally integrable transition-rate matrices and are penalized by relative entropy with respect to a state-dependent reference generator. We prove that the value function is the unique bounded viscosity solution on the closed simplex of the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equation by a direct dynamic-programming argument and a finite-state comparison principle. Under a uniform semiconvexity condition and C¹\,¹ regularity\, the value function is globally semiconvex and intrinsically C¹\,¹ on the closed simplex and yields a Gibbs feedback that is the unique Hamiltonian minimizer at interior states. For positive\, symmetric\, possibly state-dependent reference rates\, an entropy-plus-value free energy decays globally exponentially when the temperature parameter is compatible with the semiconvexity modulus. We also establish a discounted planner-to-game correspondence for potential mean field games under a state-independent reference generator.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2026 Ta-You Wu Lecture in Physics | From Prehistoric Qubits to Building a Useful Quantum Computer
DESCRIPTION:This is a hybrid lecture. Join us in person at Rackham Amphitheatre (4th Floor) or via livestream: https://myumi.ch/d8Q7X\n\nIn the span of four decades\, quantum computation has evolved from an intellectual curiosity to a potentially realizable technology. I will describe my thesis work on macroscopic quantum tunneling and energy-level quantization that led to the Nobel Prize\, as well as several other important experiments that advanced superconducting qubits. Nevertheless\, the path toward a full-stack scalable technology is a work in progress. There are significant outstanding quantum hardware\, fabrication\, architecture\, and algorithmic challenges that must be solved. Here\, we show how the road to scaling could be paved by adopting existing semiconductor technology to build much higher-quality qubits and employing system engineering approaches.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CCMB/DCMB Weekly Bioinformatics Seminar Series featuring Luis Zaman\, PhD (Assistant Professor of Complex Systems and EEB\, U-M)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Luis Zaman’s research spans several disciplines to answer fundamental questions about how evolution works. While he often approaches questions from an experimentalist’s perspective\, work in his lab relies on a mixture of computational\, mathematical\, and microbial systems. He is predominantly drawn to understanding host-parasite coevolution because the constant push-and-pull of antagonistic interactions emphasizes the dynamic and interdependent nature of biological evolution. These antagonistic interactions have been implicated in large-scale evolutionary patterns\, such as diversification\, sexual reproduction\, and increasing organismal complexity. How coevolution is further influenced by such large-scale patterns presents problems that orient the lab’s long-term goals.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Exponential Rank Bounds for Random Matrices
DESCRIPTION:A basic question in random matrix theory is how likely a matrix is to have a large rank. For many classical models\, this probability decays extremely quickly\, but the strongest results often rely on the entries being identically distributed. In this talk\, I will discuss how to obtain the same exponential scale for matrices with fully independent\, non-identically distributed entries under only a uniform anti-concentration assumption and explain the main ideas that make this possible.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Kullback–Leibler Mirror-Prox for Measure-Valued Variational Inequalities and Mean-Field Equilibria
DESCRIPTION:We study the computation of static mean-field equilibria on a compact state space by formu-\nlating the equilibrium condition as a variational inequality over probability measures. We propose\nan entropic variant of Korpelevich’s extragradient algorithm—the Kullback–Leibler Mirror-Prox\nmethod—in which Euclidean projections are replaced by relative-entropy proximal steps. Each\nhalf-step is therefore an explicit exponential reweighting of the current measure\, implemented on a\nfinite state-space discretization. Under Lasry–Lions monotonicity and continuity assumptions\, we\nprove convergence of mesh-refined ergodic averages and obtain finite-iteration Minty-residual and\napproximate-equilibrium bounds that jointly quantify iteration and discretization errors. Under\nstrong monotonicity\, we derive metric convergence rates for the last\, best\, and averaged iterates.\nWe also develop a KL-type Tikhonov regularization that selects the equilibrium minimizing relative\nentropy with respect to a reference measure. The framework applies to potential and nonpotential\ncost operators and does not require differentiability or convexity of the cost in the individual state.\n\nJoint work with Erhan Bayraktar\, Ibrahim Ekren and Lu Vy.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:SAPAC GROWE: Engendering Respectful Communities Workshops - SY26 - 27
DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances. The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings. The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session. If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging\, please reach out to the GROWE team. SAPAC GROWE provides exemptions to the ERC workshop (where requirements are set in place) on a case by case basis. The Program Manager will communicate with students requesting exemptions via email and/or meet with students via zoom meetings to discuss their need for exemptions and provide any relevant and necessary resources.
