SUMMARY:Exhibition:“Who Counts? A History of Voting in America”
DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series | Nourishing Life: Cultures of Food and Health in Early Modern Japan
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This lecture will be held in person in room 1010\, Weiser Hall\, and virtually on Zoom. If you would like to attend via Zoom\, registration is required. Once you've registered\, joining information will be sent to your email. Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/ykpz2\n\nCan food determine your fate? Could indulging in delicacies bring calamity to your community? This talk reevaluates the history of Japanese food culture by examining how ideas of healthy eating became both a popular phenomenon and a matter of grave concern among trained medical experts and amateur culinary enthusiasts alike. It explores why ordinary people ate what they did\, how these ideas on proper eating came to be\, and what social\, economic\, and moral concerns propelled their rise. Guidance on dietetics conveyed priorities about how well-nourished bodies were meant to act in the world\, whether as agricultural workers\, samurai bureaucrats\, or merchant consumers. Failure to keep a proper diet carried life-or-death consequences\, according to these guides\, that could bring not just disease to oneself but financial and moral ruin to one’s household\, domain\, or even society at large. This study of historical nourishment modes in Japan thus reveals an early modern dietetic revolution in the making\, which disrupted older forms of expertise and provided a venue to critique official policies on eating and living right before the introduction of modern scientific nutrition.\n\nJoshua Schlachet is a historian of Japan\, specializing in the cultural history of nourishment in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. His new book\, *Nourishing Life: Cultures of Food and Health in Early Modern Japan* (University of Hawaiʻi Press\, 2026)\, examines how the emergence of a dietary common knowledge expanded concepts of a well-nourished body to encompass economic productivity\, status hierarchy\, and moral cultivation. Schlachet is co-editor of *Interdisciplinary Edo: Towards an Integrated Approach to Early Modern Japan* (Routledge\, 2024)\, a collected volume of innovative humanistic research on society and culture in the Tokugawa era. He received his Ph.D. in East Asian languages and cultures from Columbia University in 2018 and is a proud graduate of the University of Michigan's Center for Japanese Studies.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye
DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:DCMB Tools and Technology Seminar by Binh Duong Giap (Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the DCMB Tools & Technology Seminar Series featuring a presentation by Binh Duong Giap from the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences. Enjoy a complimentary pizza lunch while learning about innovative research and cutting-edge tools.\n\n“Advancing Cataract Surgery Analytics with AI: Pupil Segmentation and Surgical Skill Metrics”\n\nAbstract: \nThe growing availability of surgical video data creates opportunities to develop computational tools for automated analysis of surgical procedures. In cataract surgery\, quantitative analysis of intraoperative videos can support research\, surgical training\, and objective assessment of surgical performance. However\, extracting reliable visual features from surgical videos remains challenging due to instrument occlusion\, lighting variations\, and complex surgical motion.\n\nIn this seminar\, I will present a computational framework for automated analysis of cataract surgery videos. First\, I introduce tensor-based feature extraction methods for robust pupil recognition and segmentation during surgery. These methods enable reliable detection of pupil structures under challenging intraoperative conditions. I will also present CatSkill\, an AI-based system that analyzes surgical videos to derive quantitative metrics for assessing surgical skill. Together\, these approaches demonstrate how computer vision and machine learning can enable objective analysis of surgical videos and support the development of data-driven tools for ophthalmic surgery.
