DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, May 6\, 2025 | 2:00-3:30pm ET\n2:00-3:00 Seminar\n3:00-3:30 Questions and Collaboration\n\n1430BD ISR-Thompson\n426 Thompson St.\n\nRegister to attend\n\nAbstract\nThis talk traces the concept of privacy from a late 19th-century legal right—spurred by tabloid harassment—to today's digital age challenges. It highlights Differential Privacy (DP)\,a cryptography-based method designed to balance data privacy and utility in a quantified way. However\, despite DP's advancements and explicit warnings (e.g.\, Kifer and Machanavajjhala\, 2011“No free lunch in data privacy”\;Tschantz et al\, 2022\,“SoK:Differential privacy as a causal property”)\,misconceptions about its resistance to adversaries' prior knowledge persist. By revisiting Warner's (1965\, JASA) randomized response mechanism\, we argue that this misperception lies in treating data as static objects\, rather than realizations of underlying\, typically interdependent attributes or variables. We show how DP's effectiveness can falter when adversaries exploit interdependencies among individuals—similar to how quarantining only symptomatic individuals fails to stop an airborne disease. A holistic statistical perspective on joint modeling data is therefore as crucial for data privacy as for data analysis. (Joint work with James Bailie and Ruobin Gong.)\n\nBio:\nDr. Xiao-Li Meng is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of HDSR and the Whipple V. N. Jones Professor of Statistics\, and the Founding Editor-in-Chief of Harvard Data Science Review\, is well known for his depth and breadth in research\, his innovation and passion in pedagogy\, his vision and effectiveness in administration\, as well as for his engaging and entertaining style as a speaker and writer. Meng was named the best statistician under the age of 40 by COPSS (Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies) in 2001\, and he is the recipient of numerous awards and honors for his more than 150 publications in at least a dozen theoretical and methodological areas\, as well as in areas of pedagogy and professional development.

Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

DESCRIPTION:GLP-1 pioneer and Taubman Scholars\nto headline Taubman Institute 2025 Spring Symposium May 7 \n\nHeadlines have been dominated in recent months by a new class of drugs\, like Ozempic and Mounjaro\, based on gastrointestinal hormones that include GLP-1\, and their ability to control Type 2 diabetes without insulin while reducing body weight.\n\nBut while these positive effects may have been news to many\, Dr. Richard DiMarchi was helping lay the foundation for their emergence for the past 40 years. Dr. DiMarchi is a Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Gill Chair in Biomolecular Sciences at Indiana University.  His research has championed the biosynthesis and chemical optimization of macromolecules\, such as peptides and proteins\, with enhanced therapeutic properties. He has spent much of his career focused on improving the lives of individuals with diabetes\, and in more recent decades\, obesity.\n\nHe will headline the Taubman Institute Spring Symposium on May 7 at the Kahn Auditorium in the BSRB.  \nPosters 8-9:30am\, talks 9:30am-12:30pm. DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle.
