SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Online Arabic Placement test_May 8\, 2025 (12pm-3pm EST)
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test takes approximately three hours in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed via Zoom and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed online through Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other two portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary. How is the result calculated?Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the LSA Language Requirement.Where can I view my results? Placement results are posted within 7 business days after taking the test. You will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.\nImportant information about the test* Please note that only students who are participating in the Spring/Summer orientations are eligible to take the online placement test. If you are an existing UM student\, please sign up to take the in-person placement test that is taking place in August.* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in\, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* Students who are currently taking an Arabic course will not be allowed to take the placement test. * The test assesses students’ proficiency in Standard Arabic (fuSHa)\, NOT colloquial Arabic.* If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge\, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before\, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM\, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level\, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement.* Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in\, or if they test out of the language requirement. This is extremely important to avoid delays in graduation and complications with placement.* Arabic 101\, 201\, 401\, 501 or 504 are offered ONLY in the Fall semester\, and Arabic 102\, 202\, 402\, 511 are ONLY offered in the Winter semester.* Arabic 103 (the equivalent of Arabic 101 & 102\, combined) AND Arabic 203 (the equivalent of Arabic 201 & 202\, combined) are offered in the Spring-Summer terms.UM’s Arabic curriculum is a dual register curriculum in which students learn to speak and understand the Levantine dialect (the dialect of Jordan\, Syria\, Palestine and Lebanon) in addition to developing the four language skills of formal Arabic (fuSHa). If you have questions regarding the placement test\, please contact the Arabic program director at\, mesarabicprogram@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Leveraging the unique (photo)reactivity of aromatic cations for chemical biology
DESCRIPTION:Covalent protein modification chemistries have become an essential component to a wide array of fields ranging from drug discovery and chemical biology to materials chemistry. As a result\, the development of new ligation chemistries with enhanced sophistication and new capabilities serve to not only enable access to protein conjugates with new functional properties but can also provide unique lenses through which to probe biological structure and processes directly in a native environment. This seminar will discuss recent efforts by our group to develop unique chemical transformations that covalently modify biological matter via unusual or underexplored mechanistic pathways as well as their application in the study of complex biological systems.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Professors Zhan Chen\, Anna Kirkland\, and Anne McNeil\, Collegiate Professorship Inaugural Lecture
DESCRIPTION:This event will take place both in person and virtually.\n\nProfessor Zhan Chen\, the Michael D. Morris Collegiate Professor of Chemistry\, Macromolecular Science and Engineering\, Biophysics\, and Applied Physics\n\nLecture Title: Probing Polymer and Biological Molecules at Buried Interfaces in Situ in Real Time\n\nLecture Abstract: Interfacial properties such as adhesion\, friction\, biocompatibility\, and chemical reactivity are mediated by interfacial structures. It is difficult to study buried interfacial structures in situ at the molecular level due to the lack of appropriate tools. We have developed sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy into a powerful tool to study in situ\, real time molecular structures and interactions at buried interfaces\, including complex polymer and biological interfaces. Our research not only provides fundamental knowledge about interfaces\, but also elucidates molecular interaction mechanisms at buried interfaces that are important for industrial applications and commercial products. \n\nProfessor Anna Kirkland\, the Kim Lane Scheppele Collegiate Professor of Women's and Gender Studies\n\nLecture Title: Troubles with Health Care Civil Rights\n\nLecture Abstract: Applying civil rights laws to health care has been hard for a long time. From the hospital desegregation efforts of the 1960s to debates over gender-affirming care today\, civil rights and health care have troubled each other. What does anti-discrimination mean in doctor-patient interactions\, in health insurance benefit plans\, and in our courts and legislatures? Why are civil rights in health care running into troubles\, and what are those troubles? I answer these questions drawing on my research into health care civil rights implementation in hospitals across the country\, the histories of our civil rights laws and regulations\, and the stakes of our current legal and political disputes.\n\nProfessor Anne McNeil\, the Carol A. Fierke Collegiate Professor of Chemistry\, Program in the Environment\, and Macromolecular Science and Engineering\n\nLecture Title: Microplastics are Here\, There\, and Everywhere\n\nLecture Abstract: Microplastics have been found virtually everywhere we've looked\, sparking concerns about their impacts on the environment and human health. As a result\, quantifying the concentration\, identity\, and fate of microplastics is one of the most important questions of our time. Yet the existing data may be flawed\; the burden of proof for calling something a microplastic is minimal\, and it is not uncommon for researchers to report a microplastic based on appearance alone\, or with a low quality spectrum. Moreover\, many studies lack proper controls or use equipment that could introduce contamination. SUMMARY:Performance:The Arcadian Wild
DESCRIPTION:Modern string band music with captivating vocal harmonies\n\nThe Arcadian Wild is a four-piece indie folk/pop group from Nashville\, TN. Led by songwriters Isaac Horn and Lincoln Mick and Bailey Warren on fiddle\, The Arcadian Wild confidently inhabits and explores an intersection of genre\, blending the traditional with the contemporary. Combining elements of progressive bluegrass\, folk\, and formal vocal music\, The Arcadian Wild offer up songs of invitation\; calls to come and see\, to find refuge and rest\, to journey and wonder\, to laugh and cry\, to share joy and community and sing along.\n\nThe band’s 2023 album Welcome marks the start of a captivating new chapter for the genre-bending trio\, who returned to the studio with renewed purpose and insight after devoting the last few years to a series of critically acclaimed singles and EPs. Like much of the band’s catalog\, the album blurs the lines between chamber folk and progressive bluegrass\, drawing on everything from country and classical to pop and choral music with lush harmonies and dazzling fretwork\, but this time around there’s a rawness to the writing\, an embrace of candor and simplicity that cuts straight to the heart of things like never before. The result is perhaps the most arresting collection yet from a band known for its ability to stop listeners dead in their tracks\, an exquisitely beautiful celebration of community\, connection\, and the power of belonging that feels tailor-made for these challenging times.
