DESCRIPTION:A new report from the Michigan Poll on Healthy Aging highlights major gaps in planning and preparedness for long-term care among older Michiganders\, and their peers nationwide.\n\nJoin us for a webinar with the report's authors from the University of Michigan Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation\, who will describe the findings and their implications for older adults\, families\, communities\, policymakers\, and beyond. We'll hear more about older Michiganders' experiences\, knowledge\, and attitudes related to long-term care\, along with how these compare to the nation as a whole.\n\nWe'll also take questions about what we know — and don’t know — about long-term care and older adults. The Michigan Health Endowment Fund will join to reflect on how this new information connects to its efforts to support older adults and their caregivers across the state\, and a representative from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services will discuss forthcoming resources to help families understand the long-term care landscape and access the support they need.\n\nThe Michigan Poll on Healthy Aging\, and its counterpart the National Poll on Healthy Aging\, are based at the U-M Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation and supported by the Michigan Health Endowment Fund and Michigan Medicine.\n\nThis event will be live-captioned.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... DESCRIPTION:Global Accessibility Awareness Day is a virtual accessibility event on Thursday\, May 15\, 2025\, aimed at engaging in conversation\, thinking\, and learning about access and inclusion. This year’s event is sponsored by the University of Minnesota and co-sponsored by the University of Illinois system and the University of Michigan. The event is organized by a volunteer group of dedicated University employees.\n\nDirector of Disability Equity and ADA Coordinator Allison Kushner and Senior Accessibility Specialist Erin Metz will present \"Creating Awareness & Empowering Change: Building a Campus-wide Disability Awareness Program\" on Track C of Session 1. This presentation focuses on how to develop and implement a comprehensive disability awareness training program designed to educate a university community on its disability compliance obligations but also foster a culture of disability inclusion and accessibility. This presentation by UM's Disability Equity Office will highlight the key challenges\, successes\, and impacts of implementing its own disability education and training program. Participants will gain insight into leveraging their available resources to build a training program\, including creating a strategic mission and roadmap for implementation\, and how to utilize objective data to gain buy-in and enthusiasm for growth from key stakeholders.

DESCRIPTION:We need your help with an important initiative in the Med School Office of Research and Biomedical Research Core Facilities (BRCF) to better align bioinformatics support with research needs.\n\nSince becoming a recharge facility in 2012\, the BRCF Bioinformatics Core has seen major changes in the bioinformatics landscape. Platforms now offer bundled analysis support\, and researchers use commercial or open-source systems (e.g.\, nf-Core/Seqera\, Epi2Me\, Illumina Partek).\n\nOther informatics cores at U-M have also expanded\, and labs are gaining computational skills. Despite this\, bioinformatics still presents challenges and frustrations for many researchers. Changes at the NIH may also impact the availability of bioinformatics support.\n\nTo address these issues\, we aim to engage the research community and ensure the BRCF Bioinformatics Core meets evolving needs. DESCRIPTION:The William L. Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test takes approximately three hours in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed via Zoom and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed online through Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other two portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary.How is the result calculated?Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the LSA Language Requirement.Where can I view my results? Placement results are posted within 7 business days after taking the test. You will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.\nImportant information about the test* Please note that only students who are participating in the Spring/Summer orientations are eligible to take the online placement test. If you are an existing UM student\, please sign up to take the in-person placement test that is taking place in August.* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in\, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* Students who are currently taking an Arabic course will not be allowed to take the placement test. * The test assesses students’ proficiency in Standard Arabic (fuSHa)\, NOT colloquial Arabic.* If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge\, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before\, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level.
